2022 FIFA World Cup of Marketing (with soccer tournament)
buddha replied to Hongbit's topic in General Sports
i remember being in a bar in chicago in 2004 when zidane scored twice in the dying moments for france to beat england 2-1. the bar owner had to step and keep the one french fan (other than me) from getting pummelled after the game. owner was irish so he didnt mind england losing. and it was all the sweeter because gerrard was the one who fucked up and lost the game. liverpool loser. -

half of france's team is injured so i'm not sure why theyre thw favorite. other than the fact that france's reserves are as talented as 3/4 of the teams in the tournament. in fact, missing pogba and kante and kimpembe probably make them better. missing benzema really hurts but france actually seem to work better as a team with giroud in the lineup. giroud clears out space and helps mbappe by being a set up guy. benzema and mbappe tend to run into each other's way. but if you need a last minute inspiration to win you a game, you cant do better than benzema. -

not your same ol lions after all. FIRE DAN CAMPBELL!!!!!! -
to get basically nothing from three straight drafts has killed this team. not to mention multiple first round picks and top ten picks. its just killed them.
-
i guess theyre required to say nice things about wings players. zadina has shown nothing this year to change the perception of him as another wasted late holland draft pick. chock up veleno in that group too. with the caveat that both are still young.

here's your test, lions. dont fail. -
i dont care what the committee thinks, i think theyre wrong. lol. fuck osu. they had their shot and they blew it. btw, if osu had beaten michigan and it were michigan trying to get in, i would definitely say usc, and maybe even bama should be ranked above them. michigan's schedule left them no room for error. fortunately for them, they didnt error.
-
i do not want an osu rematch. osu's resume is weak af. bama's isnt great but they lost close games to good teams on the road. osu didnt "blow out" penn state. they got a late turnover score to make a close game look like a beat down. and i dont really rate penn state either. who did penn state beat? auburn? lol. usc is the team that got screwed because williams got hurt. yeah, they gave up 40+ to utah with some late scores, but so did osu to michigan....AT HOME. it is completely unfair that osu backed into this because usc was forced to play another game. but that's the way it is. bama has no shot at the top 4. they lost twice and never looked good against multiple teams. tcu played a tougher schedule (on paper) and looked better against texas than bama did.

i thought jj played well. purdue upsets a lot of big teams for a reason: well coached and hard to play against that offense, especially when the weather is nice (or climate controlled). how good is will johnson going to be? they schemed charlie jones on him and he held his own and came up with two picks. roldan got a lot of run as a linebacker tonight and the young dts played a bunch too. michigan's defense has some potential players on it for next year. homestly, if they go to the portal it might be at oline again given the coming graduations. or running back if corum leaves (and that's still an "if", in imo given michigan's nil potential, how the nfl thinks of rbs, and his injury). hot take: edwards will be drafted higher than corum and might even be a low first round pick after next year. big, strong, fast, and a great receiver. he's like deandre swift with a heart. next year sets up ok for them as they have the buckeyes at home and their usual pansy ass non conference cake walk. minnesota, nebraska, penn state, and sparty on the road. that's not easy and i would bet they drop at least one of those games. but you never know! i didnt think they would beat osu in colombus this year either...

after watching yet another loss to yet another good team, it gets sort of depressing to think of how far away the wings still are. there is no jack eichel or jack hughes or austin matthews or mitch marner on this team. nor is there one in the farm system, to be honest. seider is playing a bit better, but he's still nothing like he was last year. edvinsson isnt doing much statistically at GR (although i havent seen any games so i dont know how he's playing). all we have to go on for kasper is highlights from sweden, but he doesnt look like a scoring dynamo, and instead looks more like dylan larkin (not a bad thing at all, but not a world beater). plus their best trade chip is hurt and probably untradeable (unless you think larkin is getting moved...). bert being out and vrana bring drunk have really killed this team. what might have been a borderline playoff team is now firmly stuck in no man's land: too bad for the playoffs, too good for the top of the lottery.

the schedule toughens up and the losses start coming.
-
im all about arguing usc over osu. usc had to play a top ten team twice (once on the road) and play an extra game. they beat notre dame more thoroughly than osu did. osu got spanked at home. osu doesnt deserve it.

tcu's luck might have just run out.

berhalter's brother is a us soccer high up official. i doubt he goes anywhere. in fact, id be stunned if they fired him. after all, he did his job, they got out of the group (thanks to england playing for a tie). -
a reminder to michigan: any given saturday. btw, rewatching that game, michigan is up 4 and osu has the ball at midfield. they call a fake punt that likely would have worked. that game was closer than the final score. a few plays here and there and its a different game. i dont want osu to have another chance until next year in ann arbor.

i think a tcu loss puts a rematch in play. tcu, michigan, and georgia win and its georgia v osu and michigan v tcu. tcu loses and its georgia v tcu and michigan v ohio state. it really shouldnt be. usc should be in over osu. its unfair that usc has to play an extra game against a top 10 team and osu doesnt. usc should be in.
