Watching the Tigers is like having minor surgery every day...you go in hoping for the best, they put you to sleep, and when you come to, you're in pain and feeling nauseous. -

Turned on ESPN College GameDay for the first time in a few years for about 5 minutes.....unwatchable. Corso is a corpse, and there's some bearded stoner in the middle who looks bored and has nothing to say when he's asked....wow.

I agree. Just split the one-score games last year and they would have had 6 wins. So yeah, after a second offseason and the expected gains in cohesion/players, if they don't do at least that well + 1 more that would be a big disappointment. I don't know whether they have a winning team but they need to launch a legitimate challenge for ".500" (8+ wins).

If our standard of care means we have to eliminate speculation around here then I think we'll be reduced to emojis.

It would be really nice to have a well above average OL and give the skill players a chance to shine. Absent a lot of injuries, that seems likely to be the case. We'll see if the skill players make the most of it. Goff, Swift, ARSB, Reynolds....seems like a decent crew. Give any decent group a lot of daylight and time and they could perform above average. If we also could scrape together a good DL we'd be on our way. The front 7 on D doesn't look good at this point as a group, but it will hopefully be fun to watch Hutch zoom around and crash into the opposition. Here's hoping for a decent season and a stepping stone to something good beyond.

That makes sense, though I wonder if for some it might be better to use a no-tech/low-tech de-stress technique, just to cut down on screen/eyes/brain interaction.

Oddly, my doctor said that other day that ping-pong is the second best activity to promote overall mental agility and the health of the brain next to chess. So they are feelin' good, but hittin' bad.

I agree with all of that, and I can't imagine that the Tigers staff is THAT blinkered, but I still was happy to see Hinch jarred a little bit out of the manager-speak at least for a day. I like him but I think his PR approach has been to dry for the level of suck experienced this year. I don't want to see Billy Martin resurrected, but I did like the way Smokes talked about failure; there seemed to be a clearer connection between what was happening today and what was expected to get things back up to snuff tomorrow or at least at some point in the foreseeable future.

Yes - put another way, after the wipe-out catastrophe that has occured with most of the Tigers hitters this year, what fan WOULDN'T want to see Grossman killing it in ATL because of better analysis/techniques or whatever they have down there, and who wouldn't breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the guys in DET might learn from it? If ATL is doing sometihng helpful for Grossman, it could something that could help explain what we are missing here in DET and maybe provide our coaches with the potential means to employ a fix. That kind of discovery would be a GOOD thing. Instead, as Grossman cools off, we get some people around here clucking about we were all wrong wrong wrong to think that ATL might have a better way. Well, I'm glad that we have that all straightened out. There are no answers, there is no way, nobody knows anything, we're doomed. That's bloody nice to know, I'll just go watch Detroit's Jai Alai team now. Or maybe, just maybe, failure is a great teacher. I sure hope so, because DET has banked a LOT of it.

Yes, I felt the most important takeaway from the Grossman thing wasn't his hitting it was what he said (which was essentially that he had not had direct assistance from analysts before) and what Hinch said (essentially that the Tigers should look into doing that). When discussions focus on what they should have done with some guy, a pop-up meme-fest erupts every time the guy gets hot or cold. It's like arguing about climate change...it becomes a stand-in about people's prior convictions about the guy, the Manager, the GM, etc.

That would be great. I am not saying that its guarantees to work out the way we ideally want or even mostly, though it could prove to be a huge turning point. After the firesale in 2017 and the subsequent 4 year starvation diet, it wouldn't be a sin to at least sport an average payroll, and there's going to be adequate space to fit in Correa and still have a league average payroll post Miggy.

Yeah, I didn't mention the younger guys, I am focusing on guys who are knocking on the door and could challenge for a starting role in 2023 and/or 2024. It will hopefully be time for Colt, Jobe, Jung, Graham, Pacheco, Santana, Campos, to show what they have in 2025 and beyond. Beyond 2 years, though, and the prospects can be interesting, but there's too much unpredictability even about the best players in their primes to have any clue about what is going to happen with any prospect in 3 years much less 4 or 5. The only thing that matters beyond 2 years is whether the owner is committed to winning and capable. If that is the case, you have a good chance. If that is not, it's probably not going to matter who you have in the pipeline.

Yeah, I was the biggest AA detractor but what happened to Meadows is completely blind bad luck. I/P might wind up being a good hitter/player, he certainly seems to be coming around power-wise, and his strike zone judgment and K/BB are nice, even when he's struggling, so there's more there now than his 100 at-bat hot streak. I'll be interested to see where things stand by this time next year.
