It's easier for Harvard to play hardball, because they receive so much money from philanthropists, but it's good to see one university standing up to Trump's authoritarianism. This has nothig top do with anti-semitism and everything to do with control. It's not the president's job to tell universities what they can teach and what they can research with funds they have already been awarded. https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/14/us/harvard-rejects-policy-changes/index.html

It's partly about revenge for Trump, but I believe Del was spot on about Musk and other super wealthy businessmen wanting more control rather than tax cuts.

I suppose if it's done it like you said, they might not get that message. I think in general though that kids are learning to fear and mistrust adults and that some adults may now be afraid to be friendly to kids.

2025 Detroit Tigers General Discussion Thread
Tiger337 replied to IdahoBert's topic in Detroit Tigers
I doubt he was seriously in the running. It seems the Tigers had made a strong commitment to a more analytical organization at the point they hired Harris. I didn't get the impression that Menzin qualified. He had Avila era quant awareness, not Harris era. -
This is true. Easy access is a problem. People had too much access to prescription opioids which is how the epidemic got started. They have less access to prescription opioids now, but so many are now addicted that there is a big market in the United States for illegal opioids. That is why drug dealers come here so much. We also have great access to unhealthy foods. As usual, it's big business and big marketing telling us to eat all this stuff.

It's not easy for some people, but we have so many more obese people than most other countries (including developed and undeveloped countries). Why is that? I have been around 6-0 150 my entire life which is probably average in many countries, but I have been told I'm too skinny and need to put some meat on my bones on many occasions. I eat plenty, never go hungry and am generally healthy, so I never feel a need to gain weight. For some men though, there seems to be a pressure to be big. At social events, people (both men and women) are compelled to eat a lot. It feels like the same pressure put on people to drink alcohol. Maybe that is something that needs to change about our society.

I understand the rule, but I think it's sad that t has to be that way. I don't think teaching children that adults are to be feared and mistrusted is a good lesson.

He probably got a life!

Phil went ballistic. Not my mom!
-
My mother was our cub scout leader. She was very kind to all of them and they loved her except for Phil. I think she generally followed the cub scout manual as to what activities we would do each week. Phil was a punk and nobody liked him. One week, we were building a bird house and he got jealous because another kid was building a better one than him. So, he started a fight with the other kid. My mother kicked him out of the house, and went ballistic screaming and making gestures as he left. MAGA would have supported Phil.

Too woke? Is Hegseth 12 years old?

Government employees are not high paid. They make less than their private sector counterparts. The amount saved is gong to be miniscule in the grand scheme of things. It's all about cruelty and revenge and putting on a show.

She may have done what she had to do politically, but if a Republican groveled to Trump, that person would be ridiculed here (Rubio or Graham for example). She's fair game.
-
She ran a bad campaign She didn't campaign hard enough in some swing states and lost them. I really hope there are some new candidates with pulses next time.
-
It's a stupid question. Of course. more manufacturing jobs would be a good thing in a vacuum. However, if other sectors are suffering at their expense then it's not a good thing.

It's because the party decides on a candidate and puts all their resources into that person. Clinton turned out to be a bad choice. Biden may have been the right choice in 2020, but I think he won because Trump's idiocy was on display every single day during the worst public health crises of our lifetimes. In 2024, people were mad about high prices, they blamed that on Biden and they forgot how much of a moron Trump is.
-
That's easy. A bunch of candidates left the primary trail at around the same time, so the entire party could rally around Biden.

The Dodgers will probably lead the Majors in wins this year, but they are currently in third place. They are not the unbeatable super power everybody was making them out to be when they swept the Tigers. The Tigers almost won two games in that series.
-
I think the Democratic party has pretty much decided their preferred candidate ahead of time the last two elections. Then they decided another one on the fly in 2024! I suggest they leave it wide open in 2028. Otherwise, it will be hard for many people to take their claims of "defending Democracy" seriously. Let the people decide who they want.

Getting ghosted by Trump is a badge of honor.

I did the same thing last year with my bank account money. 4.7% is better than 0%.

They have the starting pitching to do so. Their hitting is not likely to maintain the current pace, but it looks much improved over last year. -
It's a little early to be writing them off...but I agree they don't look impressive. The Tigers on the other hand are giving me a really good feeling. Last year was fun, but there was luck involved. This year, there is no luck about it so far. They are just playing great ball. Their hitting will likely slow down, but their pitching should get better. For what it's worth, I was just looking at their playoff odds on fangraphs and B-ref and they have the highest probability of any team in the American League.

Wouldn't killing people mean there would be fewer people to buy stuff? Poor people don't matter to them, but people wealthy enough to take cruises are useful.
-
They are already going after scientists, researchers. universities, etc. It is pretty obvious by the departments they are targeting anybody who is using critical thnking or learning how to do so. These people go against their best interests.
