  1. I think the interview clip is a nothing burger. They may have decided a month ago they are out on all QBs before the 5th round and want to go after a certain veteran backup who will be available. They’re (smartly) not going to say boo about it publicly. You want the Raiders, Panthers, and Titans to think we might take a QB. If they want one and they jump us for him, hey one more defensive player available.
  2. I thought so too! A bit of pandering to ownership at times, but she’s earned it LOL
  3. I agree. I think 2023 is a prove-it year for Goff, whether his long-term deal is here or elsewhere.
  4. As of today, Stroud is the only QB I would consider at 6. Maybe Richardson at 18, but I’m not over the moon about him. Maybe Hooker in the 2nd or 3rd round, need to think more on him.
  5. Goff is probably looking at one more big contract, of which next season will dictate a lot. If he plays out of his mind like he did in the last 10 games last season, it’s not outrageous to think he could get something like 4 years / $150MM. Could he bet on himself, go elsewhere, and still get it? Maybe. Carolina would make sense if he did. But the best odds by far of that happening is in Detroit, in year three with Dan Campbell, Ben Johnson, and the offensive weapons here. And if he does it, and then goes elsewhere to get that payday while Detroit goes to a sophomore who backed him up in 23? No skin off Goff’s back.
  6. Hate it when my caps lock gets stuck on. I wouldn’t go on any truther crusade against the authorities in Athens though if I were Carter. Take your misdemeanors with a “yes sir, sorry sir” before anyone gets pissed with you enough to look for a felony. Two people died. This is really bad.
  7. If he did I would take that into account when deciding whether to take a QB. I don’t think he would though. It’s in his best interest to play like a $40MM quarterback next season, so that either the Lions or someone else pays him that much on his next contract. His best chance of doing that is here.
  8. I think you have to learn from the Packers ineptitude. If taking a QB is on the table, I would be up front with Goff about it right now. That Goff is your QB in 2023, and that any QB taken is a development move for the future. If Goff plays how he did in the second half of 2022, there aren’t more than five QBs in the NFL today who would dethrone him, and he knows that.
  9. I think I would want a vet backup if I got Richardson too. If I took either Richardson or Hooker, I think I would announce shortly thereafter that they’ll be a redshirt in 2023 behind both Goff and a veteran backup. Don’t even let the calls for putting the rookie in surface by dressing them.
  10. Drag racing probably doesn’t go well when it takes 20 minutes to go two miles.
  11. I don't know enough about Georgia laws and politics of the prosecutor's offices to say for sure, but most common law criminal codes use a but-for causation test. For instance, if the prosecutor could show that but-for Jalen Carter racing and recklessly driving, the driver and passenger of the other car would not have died, then there is a causal showing of Involuntary Manslaughter. I also agree that there are potential charges of the Georgia equivalent to Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Failure to Report an Accident, Making a False Statement to Police, etc... But the Involuntary Manslaughter possibility sticks out to me. I'm sure that similar instances have resulted in more severe charges before.
  12. Also, it's curious they aren't seeking an Involuntary Manslaughter charge based on the facts of the case... If he's guilty of a misdemeanor (racing and/or reckless driving), and in the course of that misdemeanor caused the death of another without intending to do so, that's a mandatory year-long felony. I've seen less get charged more severely.
  13. McShay first reported about character issues regarding Jalen Carter in mid-December. This crash happened in mid-January. Not only was this not what McShay was reporting on, Carter knew that those reports were out there and still chose to partake in this.
  14. Holmes is a master of the nothing-burger answer.
  15. It will be interesting to look back on the trade in five years and view who really won.
  16. Awe, does Les “fuck them picks” Snead want his picks back now? Poor guy.
  17. Yes I think he will be. I think Houston taking the league by storm is much more likely to be something of an anomaly long-term than it is to become the norm. When Harris went down with an injury, teams began game planning around Hutch being the only strong pass rush presence on the line, and double teamed him consistently. When Houston arrived shot out of a cannon, they weren’t adjusting, and he was winning one-on-one battles while Hutch was taking the attention of the line. I think a regression to less than insane numbers is likely this off-season. He was on pace to break Strahan & Watt’s single season record across a full season. I don’t think that’s sustainable, but I sure hope I’m wrong! On the other hand, Anderson recorded double digit sacks in each of the last two seasons against SEC competition. 17.5 sacks and a Heisman invite in 2021. All while being double teamed. There are no hard and fast rules to defensive formations anyway, and I don’t think drafting Anderson would mean Houston has no future here. If Houston continues to play well enough to be on the field, I wouldn’t foreclose the possibility for all three of them to be on the field at the same time on obvious passing downs. Delay rush one of them from the middle or rush two from one side. Whatever it takes to disrupt the pocket. There are games they would be able to take over.
  18. A pass-rushing, game-wrecking presence on the interior defensive line is one of the most rare athletes in all of sports. In the NFL today, I think there is one truly elite DT (Aaron Donald), and about five very good DTs (Quinnen Williams, Chris Jones, Cam Heyward, a couple others). If you have one, you've struck gold in a way that can make your entire defensive unit substantially better... With that said (and I might get some flak here), I think it's a bit of a luxury position. The Bengals have a good defense, without that premier player. Likewise for the Bills. With that said, if you have two very good or elite edge rushers on either side, you do not need that IDL presence because it makes your IDL's job much, much easier. You get Anderson, and you don't have to worry about Hutch being the most double teamed edge rusher in the league anymore. You can tell those two to go out there and have fun meeting at the QB, while you tell Paschal and McNeill to just plug their holes and know that linebackers will be there in support as needed. I think the pocket would collapse so frequently that you won't need a game wrecking presence on the inside, because the play will be coming to them.
  19. I think they have high hopes that Paschal will fill that role this fall, but I don't think his presence will exclude them from taking Wilson or Murphy at 6 if that's the best player on their board. I also think there are conceivable packages where McNeil, Paschal, and Murphy/Wilson are all on the field at the same time.
  20. Who needs to draft a QB when a franchise QB is available in free agency?? /s
  21. Agreed. I think the term "character concerns" has grown into a catch-all for everything negative that could occur off the field, and that's not necessarily fair to a guy like Carter, when character concerns could also be attributed to guys like Titus Young and Nick Fairley, each for largely different reasons. That said, I do understand having concern with taking someone who doesn't put in 100% and who you're concerned doesn't love football. With any player, you have to account for the possibility that he comes in and gets his ass handed to him in his first real practice for the first time in his life. Remember the video of Hutch getting managed by Sewell? How will Carter react if/when he gets pancaked or shut down by Jonah Jackson and Frank Ragnow in training camp? Will he put in the time and work to get better and beat them the next day, or take his rookie contract and be happy that his raw talent got him that much?
  22. I'm trying not to be the Charlie Campbell drum beater because it feels like I keep bringing him up, but he published his scouting report on Carter even before McShay's story came out, with mention of character concerns that he heard from "team sources". I don't think the concerns are that he's a jerk in the locker room, or that he's bullying freshmen, or drinking late at night, or anything like that. For that matter, I don't think there is concrete evidence to be seen (as RandyMarsh put it), or some witness to some smoking gun character flaw... My impression from what I have read is that the concerns are more along the lines that Carter relies on raw athleticism and talent to have his way with college athletes. That he doesn't put in the work others do, in the weight room or at practice, either because he doesn't have to or doesn't want to. That it won't translate well to the NFL, either because (a) grown men NFL players who are working their ass off will seek to alienate him, causing the locker room issues, and/or (b) he's not enough of a freak-of-nature to have continued success relying on his raw talent against NFL centers and guards.
  23. I do put weight into the Risdon quote, but I also don't think it means we won't take the top edge at 6 if they're the best player on the board. He tweeted this shortly after the tweet from above. I think not taking Lukas Van Ness or Isaiah Foskey at 18 is pretty obvious. There are more pressing needs and a similar quality of player at other positions. But if the top player on your board is there at 6, and you see HOF potential, I don't think they let Charles Harris get in the way of taking that player.
  24. There is too much smoke for me to categorize it as out-and-out false. McShay isn't the only one reporting it, so it's coming from somewhere (or multiple somewheres) and while those who are claiming it aren't coming out publicly, they're certainly making it known. I've also thought these PR stunts that Carter is pulling, having his buddies come out and say what a great guy he is, and leaking about paying for another guy's meals is phony as hell. That said, I trust Holmes and Co. to do their own due diligence into the character concerns. I am sure they have their own sources in the Georgia program who can tell them what they need to know, and the truth of it too, not anybody's public spin of it.
