Would love a Dallas upset tonight where Jerry runs down to the field after and gives himself a Gatorade shower.

I have zero belief that Goff is going to line up behind Decker/Sewell/Glasgow/Mahogany/Ratledge, with Montgomery and Gibbs in the backfield, ASB, Jaymo, and Teslaa as his wide outs, and LaPorta as his tight end and they're all going to say, "We don't know what to do without Ben!" They will score a lot of points. -

MB makes an excellent point. Any OC should be able to put up points with a roster like he had in Detroit. The trick plays were cool and gave him an aura, but as we know all too well sometimes they backfired. And sometimes it seemed Ben was calling plays for his resume, not necessarily to win games. I think Dan alluded to this when he said Johnnie Morton was a grinder, didn’t want to be a head coach, just wanted to coach offense. I think they’ll try to run a little more and take a little bit of the load off Goff. -
I guess 68 sacks is an outside possibility, but I’d probably bet the under.

Yeah, for all we know Jerry’s medical team said don’t extend him, the back is too big of a risk. Upside for GB is DPOY for Parsons and a deep run. Downside is he starts to miss big chunks of time due to his back.

He signed Chiarot. 6’3” 230. He signed Holl. 6’4” 205. He signed Copp. 6’1” 203. Holl didn’t work out. Copp and Chiarot may disappoint some fans but both are physical, especially Chiarot. Also, Stevie drafted some redwoods. Don’t forget Seider is a big man who can play mean when the time is right. The Swedes are all big, Soderblom, Edvinsson, Wallinder. They may not be as physical as their size suggests, but are they soft? I don’t think Edvinsson is, at least. And Buium is in GR, a big boy who may soon prove capable of taking a job from a mediocre veteran.

I view this as a panic move by GB. They have a talented young nucleus but still ended up third in their division. Also, they gave Love the big contract but he was the third-best QB in the division last year and may still only be the third-best (or fourth?) this year. I don’t view him as being capable of shouldering the burden of being QB in Titletown and I don’t think GB brass thinks so either. I view this move as intended to take some pressure off of Love. I also view this as more likely to fail than to succeed. Clearly it makes their pass rush better but it makes their run defense worse. Also their schedule is much harder this year. And it remains to be seen how badly this injury impacts Parsons, but the docs I’ve seen commenting on the injury say the best course of action is 3-4 weeks of rest. So either they play a quarter of the season without him (and without their star DT who got traded away), or they put Parsons at risk of aggravating the injury and missing time down the road. If they don’t advance past the Wild Card round this year, I think everyone will start to recognize the bet didn’t work. Without first round picks in 26 and 27, there is little expectation that the roster will improve during that span without creative trades or spending FA money they don’t really have.

Where does this idea come from that Steve doesn’t see value in making the playoffs? He and McClellan got up in the press conference and basically ripped the team for not competing as hard as the teams that made it, and ripped the captain for whining about not acquiring overpriced talent at the trade deadline. And they were right to. Again, it is a great strategy to sign all star free agents at less than market value, and we were lucky enough to be able to do that for a long time. Not anymore. That’s not Steve’s fault. The kids are going to have to compete and grow and the team will have to improve from within.

Their 26 and 27 first round pick is questionable with an L4/L5 facet joint strain.

I think it is way harder to rebuild an NHL team than an MLB team. The talent pool in NHL is much smaller. There is no system for signing international prospects in the NHL like there is in MLB. There is much less organizational room for talent development than in MLB. I think the Tigers' rebuild was enormously helped by the use of analytics in player development which is not something that is nearly as prominent or useful in the NHL. Also, let's not forget that Kenny was so bad Stevie is still paying a guy who last played six years ago. From his first draft Stevie has a franchise defenseman in Seider. From his second he has a franchise forward in Raymond. From his third he has a defenseman who may turn out to be better than Seider in Edvinsson. From his fourth draft he has a solid 2C in Kasper. It remains to be seen what we have in Cossa and the more recent draft picks, but (especially since Seider, Raymond, Edvinsson, and Kasper have all outperformed expectations) it seems reasonable to expect Danielson, ASP, MBN, and Bear will all turn into at least solid NHL players. I know people complain that his free agent signings have been too long, for too much money, and for mediocre players. Evidently people want to sign the all stars who want to play on short term contracts for under market value, and I guess that's a great strategy if you can execute on it. So Yzerman has paid a few guys more than he would have liked to fill out the roster through this season, then he will see what the kids are able to do. If I have any criticism of Yzerman's tenure, it is that he has had 14 2nd round picks and as of yet, only Albert Johansson has shown up in any meaningful way. There is still a chance for some of them, and if Augustine, Buchelnikov, and maybe one of the big defensemen can make the NHL team, that's a competitive roster that could be attractive to the high-end free agents that right now will not take Stevie's phone calls.

Was this his face after they gave him the epidural? -
Are we saying Stevie should have signed some overpriced free agents for the second line so that the team could bump the kids to the third line where they could replace some overpriced free agents? This season they see if JBD can play, they see if Wallinder can play, they see how ASP develops, then they replace half their defensive corps going into 2026-27 with whatever mix of kids and overpriced free agents makes sense. So this season we better hope the kids play a lot and well.

This will not be the defense by the end of the season and it may not be the defense by the end of camp.

I don’t disagree that Jerry looked erratic in handling these negotiations, especially in not dealing with the agent. Also, there is a lot of wishful thinking here on my part. But it would not surprise me if Dallas ended up happier in the long run. And it would not surprise me to see controversy follow Parsons to GB. Some people just can’t avoid it.

I just posted in another thread but it seems like the Cowboys are burning up Albert Breer’s phone to talk about how much they disliked Parsons. GB was already an emotionally fragile team. Will Parsons be the straw that stirs them up? https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/micah-parsons-reportedly-viewed-by-some-cowboys-teammates-as-egotistical-self-centered-before-packers-trade/ -

Agreed. Conventional wisdom is that the defense sucks and the offense can’t fathom the loss of Ben Johnson. But without catastrophic, historically-bad injury luck, this has the makings of a top-ten defense — more likely top five. Also, the offense may not be as flashy this season, but TeSlaa seems to be an upgrade at X and I think they will focus a bit more on protecting Goff. GB got better but people who think Detroit got worse are missing it. -
Rasputin is at it again.

I don’t disagree but this team needs a star. Kasper is a good player but not the kind of player who will drive a team. Based on the very little I know about these players, ASP has the best chance to develop into a dynamic player who could drive play every shift. If he ends up a Gostisbehere, that’s hard to complain about but we are running out of chances to find game-changing players.
-
If Danielson ends up better than Marco, that is good. If Bear does not end up better than Kasper, that is not good. If ASP does not end up better than Kasper, that is very not good.

Also, I just read Albert Breer's article about how the trade went down. He said two things that were telling. One was that the Cowboys had gotten tired of seeing Parsons freelance in an attempt to make big plays. This seems to have played into Jerry Jones's comments about having had a hard time stopping the run. The other was that Kenny Clark played a big leadership role in the GB locker room. Clark has always been viewed as an "adult in the room." On paper the GB defense is better, but you never know what happens when you lose a leader on the field and off, and when you add someone who may see himself as more important than the team. GB has a lot of young players. Not sure Love is really a leader yet. It will be interesting to see how Parsons impacts the locker room.

Good point. They played a lot of bad teams last year. Had the luxury of getting a lead and running the ball. Detroit was just under 50% rushing last year (534 rushes, 551 passes). I hope Morton dials up the smashmouth a bit more and puts less on Goff.
