  1. After reading the Erod comments, and chewing this trade deadline over, I think that several things seem to make sense to me.

    1) GM's were used to rolling Alivia on a regular basis. Harris has attempted to make his personal  MO to be one that he means what he says. This will serve the organization well in the future. The Tigers are no longer everyone's trade batch.

    2) My speculation is that ERod is under tremendous pressure to make his money closer to home. That pressure is coming from his wife and whatever the true nature of such a force, it is his private matter and should stay so.

I don't think this is a failure on Harris so much as a change of heart by ERod after a deal was almost complete.

Either way, ERod will probably always require extra effort from the front office until he is playing near home. I would hope that Harris can find a solution to this, but, until ERod is playing for a Florida team, assuming his family lives in Miami, this will be a continuing problem.

Let the chips fall where they may Scott, but, you have bigger fish to fry in getting the Tiger's house in order.

  2. I had no problems of getting rid of both Candy and Schoop last season. I was wrong about Candy because I thought he would not bounce back.

But on current affairs, how would you feel if there was no trade at the trade deadline? I do think there will be one.

This is what I was thinking—if we are looking to build a organization containing hitters of the future, and we believe that Carpenter is a Hitter of the Future, then what are we trying to accomplish by trading him? What are we looking for instead of him?

I mean, I get the idea of no one is untouchable and everyone is on the table—what are the chances that we can trade a Kerry Carpenter to help someone today and receive a younger, better, better-defending Kerry Carpenter in return who is simply farther away from the majors? I'm not getting what the there there is for either side in a move like this.

This is the most sensible post regarding Carpenter that I have read

It's been discussed a lot in the past, but there's probably some value in waiting until later rounds to draft pitchers given the injury risk associated with them. Especially if, as an org, you believe in your believe in your ability to draft and develop them.

Agreed. Pitchers almost  seem certainly to have TJ surgery these days at roughly 3 years in. I think it makes more sense to develop position players and draft pitchers late. You then sign pitchers on short term deals and then , and only then nail down an FA pitcher when club performance makes a championship run possible.

I think the only people who have lost respect for Hinch as Tigers manager are frustrated fans. It's possible Miggy doesn't look up to Hinch, but then, Miggy probably doesn't look up to anybody. Otherwise, I'm guessing it's a lot of fans basically wishing Tiger players didn't respect Hinch so he'd get fired and we'd hire a manager they like while keeping the PBO who's currently working very closely with Hinch who was consulted in the hiring of the PBO.

Zepo Marx, in the movie "Horse Feathers" famously said, "To have a good football team, you have to have good football players." To which Groucho replied, "I think you're on to something."

That same sentiment applies to baseball.

Nobody has 26 stars on their team. A few more quality players could make a big difference on the Tigers roster.

an 81 win team requires 26 guys averaging 1.1 WAR each. A realistic look reveals we are perhaps a dozen players away, an absolute minimum of 6. I am not asking for Mike Trout clones. I am asking for a collection of players statistically possible to reach 81 wins

  7. Well, as I look at it, We are a catcher, 3b,2b,one OF, 2 SPs and a quality DH away from being counted on to cross the .500 barrier to the extent that a playoff spot becomes possible. That is six guys we are short. I expect our next reasonable window to start in 2025.

If Harris is interested in taking advantage of a weak AL Central, he’s going to need to find a few more hitters. Carpenter may be one, but this team can’t sustain giving so many AB’s to Maton, Ibanez, Nevin, Marisnick and Schoop.  I’d include Miggy in that list, but he’s not going anywhere.

Harris has made it clear there was no intention to compete for anything this year. It is an experimental year to find out what pieces fit where. When a couple of sub .200 hitters cannot or will not be out right released, or something else will not be tried, there just reallay anything to say because things speak for themselves.

  9. In the past, we have had many unpleasant events with respect to Tigers baseball to discuss. There are four pleasant events so far I did not expect and leave me astonished.

    1. The emergence of Zach McKinstry is unexpected.

At best, I thought he would be just a passing shiny bauble that would vanish like the morning dew. He has shown plate  patience and played far better than I expected.

    2. So far, controlling the strike zone appears to be more of a reality than expected.

The improvement in getting walks is far better than I hope.

    3. The bullpen has been almost as good as it gets.

    4. General plate patience has been completely different than recent years.

The approach at the plate has been one of improved patience and is resulting in players getting good pitches to hit.

This team is fun to watch again.
