Week One: Philadelphia Eagles (0-0) @ Detroit Lions (0-0)
NYLion replied to MichiganCardinal's topic in Detroit Lions
I think the 49ers are a good comparable for high end outcome for the Eagles but the 49ers have the best Front 7 in the league, they're special. I don't see the Eagles defense on that level. I'm just saying that the Eagles have no pedigree to believe that they're going to all of a sudden jump into the upper echelon of the league this season. As I posted earlier, 9-8 losing to every good team they played. Is AJ Brown and their draft picks THAT much of a difference maker? We'll see, but I'm skeptical. They could win that division but that would be by default since the rest of the division is el stinko including Jerruh's 'Boys who could very well take a step back this season. -

Not too many really. I guess you can say Foles as a fairly recent example (funny enough, an Eagles QB) but Wentz played at an MVP level a good chunk of that year to put them in position to make a playoff run. Of course there's the possibility that Hurts can grow into the role and the Eagles did have a nice offseason/draft but they've brought a lot of guys back from a 9-8 team that got blasted in the wildcard round by a Tampa team that was ravaged by injuries. These were their wins last year (Washington x2, Giants, Jets New Orleans, Detroit, Denver, Carolina and Atlanta), they didn't beat one playoff team and most of those teams weren't even close to the playoffs, so I just don't get why some folks are crowning them as a great team that can make a legit SB run. They're better than the Lions for sure and should be favored this week but I'm not seeing a team that's in the upper echelon of the league. -

Yep. I've been living on "less than legal" streams to watch Lions football for over a decade, if I'm not watching at a friends' house or elsewhere. -

The Eagles are overrated, don't understand all the love they're getting this offseason. It's a passing league and they have a below average passing QB which sort of negates the value of bringing in a guy like AJ Brown. They're strong in the trenches but it's hard to go far with a running QB who doesn't pass particularly well. The NFC is weak outside of the top 3 of The Bays and Rams so I guess the Eagles could be the 4th best team in the NFC but that's not saying much. With that said, it's a bad matchup for the Lions because the Lions can't stop the run and the Eagles run as well as anybody, they also struggle massively against mobile QBs. The Eagles also have a strong defensive line and the Lions offensive line is banged up so...yeah...expect some pain this Sunday. -
Blough likely chose to play on the Vikings PS and Boyle knows the playbook so I'm sure there was a level in comfort in them having him on the PS. The reality is that Boyle only sees the field if BOTH Goff and Sudfeld go down so this is as inconsequential as it gets.
-
Fair, it was a subpar game for those guys, but I thought Sewell did quite well against Watt after that disastrous first series. Either way, hard to judge when you XFL QB's back there. As much as I think backup QB is inconsequential for a rebuilding team, there has to be an upgrade available somewhere on the waiver wire. I was encouraged by Okudah and Barnes. I hadn't seen much of the previous 2 preseason games but they showed out well today albeit against Trubisky.
-
Eh, I thought they played better after the first series when Watt destroyed Sewell. Boyle was getting passes batted down and making poor decisions in general. Nothing to take from this game from an offensive standpoint. The starting defense looked pretty solid, that's about it as far as my observations of this game.

Ah, so it's likely that Jacobs and especially Levi will be put on IR after the final cuts. Thanks for the clarification.
-
KD looks real bad in all this. He gets his coach, he gets his team, everything catered to his needs and not even a year later requests a trade, demands that the coach he handpicked get fired as well as the GM who catered to all his needs (if rumors are to be believed) and now, somehow someway, he and the Nets are supposed to live in harmony? Ya, right. They have the talent to contend, I think Simmons is an ideal fit with that group. but I doubt The Diva Trio will last the year without causing turmoil.
-
We knew this for a while now. There were no surprises in terms of who went on IR and PUP. The only surprise, to me, is not seeing Jacobs on injured reserve so I wonder if he'll be ready for Week 1. No Levi either as far as I know.
-
I get that but if it's based on their actual on field competition, Kennedy should get the nod based on merit. Of course there's more that goes into the final cuts decisions like contract, need, perceived upside etc. but there's no doubt that Kennedy has at least put himself in the conversation to take a final spot based on his actual performance, he's done everything asked of him and then some. Otherwise, what's the point of having competition?
-
Unless Cephus is unable to play on opening night due to injury, I'd say he's locked in. It's Kennedy vs. Benson and I don't see how Benson beats out Kennedy unless they value Benson's speed over Kennedy's production and reliability.

"Potentially" emerging. He showed flashes of some high end pass rush last season, 5 sacks in fairly limited action. He's pretty one dimensional but he has some pretty good pass rushing chops.
-
I'm thinking that too. He's a likely cut candidate next offseason especially now that they have Hutch and Harris on the edge, not to mention Julian potentially emerging and Paschal perhaps being able to slide over at times whenever he returns, also Austin Bryant looks primed to make some noise now that he's FINALLY healthy. It's money that can be better spent elsewhere, like corner for instance.

This is the first year in a while that I'm not too invested into the lottery. This draft is supposed to be really deep anyway so they should get a good player even if they're in the lower end of the lottery. Some really good wings too which is the Pistons biggest need. I want to see progression this season. I don't expect miracles but 30-35 wins should be a good target even for a team as young as this one mainly because I expect Cade to be THAT good. If they go under, assuming relatively good health, I'd start to be concerned that maybe this young core isn't quite as good as I think they are.

Okudah had an Achilles tear not even a year ago and this is an injury that usually takes more than one year for full recovery unlike an ACL tear (like what Williams has) which has a much quicker recovery period so I wouldn't expect him to be at full strength until next season if ever again, same with Okwara who I think is a write off this season. Personally, my expectations of Okudah went into the toilet the moment he got injured last season. For a guy who already had mobility issues, that injury was likely a death blow for him being an above average corner in this league. If he proves me wrong that would be great but I'm not expecting much.
-
I think it's a combination of being the biggest winner in NBA history and him playing a big role in civil activism off the court and being a barrier breaker for black basketball players that followed him. I wouldn't call him the Jackie Robinson of basketball necessarily but... yeah... sort of like that.
-
The defense is filled with either really young guys, injured guys (Okwara, 2nd rounders and lord knows when they'll see the field again) and washed up vets so it's going to be a year filled with some ups and lot of downs. Don't expect much from the defense and just hope that they're better to end the year than they will be to start.

If Goff isn't the guy, the Lions will be in position to draft one of the top QBs anyway. If the Lions win some games in spite of Goff (highly doubtful since they're not strong enough yet to get away with average QB play) and are drafting outside of the top 10, they have the extra 1st and can just package an additional to 1st to move up to get their guy. Either way, they can draft one of the top QBs in this draft if they really want/need one or even stand pat and let one fall to them like the Patriots, in your example.
-
The cap will rise quickly (NFL is always raking in insane amounts of revenue) so this contract will probably be close to middle of the road halfway through. Regardless, It's a big overpayment right now but you have to pay QBs with franchise potential because as we know all too well, it's not so easy to find those guys. When the Lions paid Stafford, who at the time was the highest paid QB in the league, he had a ton of question marks surrounding him too but just like Arizona, the Lions had no choice but to pay the man. Personally, I'm not a fan of Murray and think he lacks the mentality to be great but Arizona had to pony up to keep him.
-
I think Livers potential as a high end 3 and D guy is underrated. He's one of those guys who is always in the right spot, making the right play and can shoot the 3 at a high level. He's also athletic enough to defend the more athletic 3's or even 4's reasonably well. He could be our version of Mikail Bridges.

That Gobert trade is.... something. Minny basically unloaded all their picks until the end of time for a one dimensional 30 year old center with a massive long term contract attached. This is why the Wolves are the Wolves.
-
They are. They're going to have around $60m cap space as it looks now. The only multi-year commitment they made was Bagley and that was fully expected. Meh is good, who the hell wants to splurge in this free agent market?
-
The Bagley contract is a bit of an overpay but not anything egregious. He's a pretty well rounded post scorer so if he improves his defense, the contract won't be an issue. My only problem is that they have all these bigs but none of them are floor stretchers outside of Olynyk who is old as dirt and oft injured. Looking at a Bagley, Stewart and Duren frontcourt long term and I can't see a fit unless Stewart starts hitting that 3 with more consistency.

Well, there's your sin eat. I was hoping for one of the Knicks 1sts if the Pistons are taking on that much salary but I actually view Burks as a net positive pickup so it's essentially the two 2nds to eat Noel's contract in my mind. I like that they are expirings too so Weaver could get another asset or two at the deadline, for Burks in particular. I'd have to think there's more stuff in the works because the frontcourt is overloaded currently.
