    The problem with doing that is it eats up most of the money they have for free agents. Better to let him sit and sign other people. He likes it here. If he is cleared of it in a month or two, he can always do a one-year deal for the vet minimum and enter free agency again next year.

    Just a guess on my part. I think if he received a ban, the league would void his contract and not count it against the salary cap. No clue if they would still have to pay it. I'm sure there is something already negotiated in the CBA that deals with it.

    Maybe if they had some extra picks stockpiled. Fair price, nice player, just too expensive for a team in Detroit's position.

    Same deal Reid got. Smith is a bit worse on offense, better on defense, probably. These deals look huge. But with the rising cap, that is only 16% of the cap this year. Max for a guy his age is 25%.
