  1. I think Hinch is all wet with his opposition to letting pitchers call their own pitches. Pitchers who cared to have have been shaking off catchers to get to what they wanted since forever. Now the clock doesn't give them the option of leading their catcher to what they want at each pitch - so doing it through reverse pitch-com seems perfectly reasonable. I don't think you will ever be able to say there is a hard and fast right answer between whether it's better for a catcher to coerce a pitcher into throwing something he has no conviction in, versus throwing what he has confidence he can execute even if it goes against the 'book' on the batter. I pay to see the players play the game, put their best against each other, not the geeks in the office.
  2. If Husso doesn't play for a while they could drop ...maybe to 27? Gets to 7.5% for #1
  3. We played the Jays even over 8 of 9 innings. The Tigers are 89% of the way to contention!
  4. Just for grins, As per football reference, Brady's Patriots won 6 SB. Their number one AV player was a receiver once, Brady twice, and CB three times.
  5. right - the SSA doesn't care if you are working or not working - makes no difference to them (of course it does to the IRS)- at any given point once you are eligible you either claim or you don't claim. Two separate issues. You can quit and take it, quit and not take it, take it and not quit (that is not often a good choice - but they won't stop you)
  6. I was a little surprised that Yzerman seemed so cold to the idea in his presser. Maybe he's just naturally contrarian but what else makes more sense? The roster is down 5 spots, someone has to suit up.
  7. Ras and Hronek are major losses, Sunqvist is a midlevel loss, and your #1 goaltender is hurting. If they were roughly a 500 team last week, they certainly are not now. This is why you need a hard core guy as GM willing to take the shot from the fans and media for torpedoing his team in the short run.
  8. didn't suggest that, only that Fetter doing analysis of an incoming pitcher is not something new to this season. But since you mentioned it, FWIW, McCoskey reported at the time that not only did Hinch already know Fetter, but Avila had him on a short list from before they hired Bosio. (LOL-so 'Avila' to take years longer to get to where he could have been earlier!) https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/mlb/tigers/2020/11/06/michigans-chris-fetter-tigers-new-pitching-coach/6185959002/
  9. Tigers cleverly trying to exhaust the Jays' hitters by giving them no time off between PAs.
  10. Yeah - Fetter might turn out to be Harris' best hire.

  14. born in Southfield, played at UM, a decade in the minors with SD and Chi, a couple cups of coffee with the Cubbies.
  15. direct TV claims that capability - it's a pretty total failure.

  18. I didn't watch any GB games other than the last one. Is his throwing still good enough to play another year or will he end up embarrassing himself?
  19. HaHa - true. But still there was some disconnect when he came back because Lalonde kept referring to Vrana 'not playing in the system.' Like I said, apart from whether he was staying clean, I'm sort of drawn to the idea that Vrana wanted out from the Wings and bucking the coach was going to be quickest way to achieve that. On the one hand he risked getting sent back and left in GR, but on the other Vrana also knew that the Wings would want him in Det so they could move him and get some kind of value back.
  20. Maybe true in general but today he only had one 2 strike count and in that one he took a pitcher's pitch that could easily have been called a ball -more likely to be called a ball than he was to hit it beyond the IF. The curve he swung at and popped up in his last AB was on the black - call could have gone either way if he had taken it. If your premise is that his issue is being too selective that may be a secondary problem to his larger one of not doing damage on hittable FBs. On the FB issue he only got one center cut FB in the three AB today and he did rip it. I don't disagree he needs to be more 'aggressive' but to me he needs to express that as less hesitation - I think last year he was consistently late on the draw when he saw a good pitch - so he was never to get out in front of it. Sure it's possible he's been trying too hard to walk because he knows he hasn't been pulling his weight. Maybe fixing the 2nd would fix the first?
  21. Don't agree. He scalded a ball in his 1st AB. 2nd AB he got nothing to hit. 4 very good pitches painting the outside and bottom of the zone. Was rung up on a perfect change-up half out of the zone low. Third AB - yeah, not so good - popped up a curve ball away he probably should have taken. But he didn't swing at any bad pitches and didn't miss the one good pitch he got.
  22. The other RH shots at GR: Matt Luff, Domink Shine doesn't seem to be a candidate.
  23. 29 HR in 18 ST games last season, 17 in 7 so far this this year. Unfortunately the first week is the week that means the least in ST. But still more fun that listening to them lose!
