Agreed. I had the same thought when watching - that we was definitely at a higher level than most on the floor. For that reason, I discounted the counting stats with the understanding that if he's progressing, he "should" get that kind of output.

Yeah, I agree with @IdahoBert - that's a great post @chasfh. Couple of points I really agree with: 1. Maximizing both for now AND later. It's tempting to go totally all in ("don't know when you'll have a better chance",etc.), but that can lead to disaster and droughts, as we've seen. Unless of course you have an unlimited budget to erase mistakes. Gotta start contributing to a 401k when you can, rather than buying a sports car because "YOLO!" 2. Seemingly a great culture. That's not always everything, but man that can make a huge difference over time. I'm sure many of us have seen that in our own real lives. That starts with leadership. 3. This has indeed happened very rapidly, and I too was wondering if I'd ever see that (really awesome that we are seeing that with Lions, and maybe Pistons too) One other thought I had is that I'm pretty sure the org will not follow the Rays model. I would call it Rays Plus. 2.

The only current SP I'd trust with a high leverage role would be Skubal. Call me crazy, but I'm thinking that wouldn't be a good move.

Oh ffs, that blows. Out BP is officially a disaster. Yeah I know, long season, blah , blah blah, but how many BP arms can we pick up at deadline? Not enough and what’s the cost? This is a significant turn of events. Even if we come back in this one, the situation ain’t good. This has been percolating.

Was thinking the same thing. There’s really no one I trust right now. The previous time Vest pitched, he got out of it but struggled with his control.

Co-sign on that. As @Motor City Sonics correctly said the other day “it’s baseball “. On the other hand, I think the last few days may be indicative of an underlying structural issue. I for one haven’t been totally comfortable with the makeup of our BP for some time. I felt the more predictive metrics were glossed over by results. That doesn’t mean it can’t be corrected of course.

Kirby’s ERA a little inflated this year, but he’s been pitching well of late. Interestingly, his WHIP is pretty decent for the year and in line with career numbers. Think maybe ERA inflated by a significant HR rate. Perhaps he had a bad stretch earlier in year. All to say - he could be a challenge. However, if he’s been more prone to HRs, that could be an opportunity. We’ve been reliant on HRs more this year. Could use another good outing from Mize.

After sleep and further reflection, it’s all about pitching over the long haul. Yeah, I realize I’m stating the obvious. The team scores enough runs; a typical Skubal start yesterday and we’re talking about gritty tigers and Riley perhaps emerging from his scuffles.

Yeah that’s true for sure wrt to games like this happening. I still don’t feel good about BP depth though. Would really like to address.

I know it’s a long season, but this highlighted some concerns - at least wrt thinking this team is a juggernaut. The bullpen is leaking oil and offense lacks some reliable stars. A team of try hards is fun, but won’t win you a WS. Probably should be happy with 90 wins, Lord knows that seemed very far away a year or so ago.

Yes. What are we doing here? I can’t think of any reason to put him in when they are hanging by a thread. Seems like earlier this year I heard Hinch say something to the effect that you always have to think about today’s game and let tomorrow take care of itself. Didn’t seem to apply here.

Really need to take next two games now.

Wow, this sucks. If it’s been so long since we’ve had a true super star, I always worry that it won’t last. This totally ruins my night.
