Question of the day.

Would you give Nickeil Alexander-Walker the full MLE, which is just over $14 million.  So probably something like 3/$45 or 4/$60 million.  Don't only consider the cost, consider it would mean you also lose Beasley.

Yes.

-Much better defender
-2 years younger
-A bit taller and bigger

Downside is he's not the offensive sparkplug and movement shooter that Beasley is. His 3P% is good (38%) but not as good as Beasley (41%). You're trading that for way better defense and you hope that Ivey replaces Beasley scoring (in different ways, obviously). You also lose the chemistry that Beasley clearly has with this locker room, but that's a risk you have to take to improve at some point anyway.

Bottom line, we need 2-way players.

Pretty expensive for a guy that turns 35 on Thursday, averaged 11/4/4 on below average shooting, and has 3/$100m left on his contract.

I think I might be the one asking for a pick.

After last nights game.  Would you want Mathurin over Ivey in the 2022 draft?  You can't use Ivey's injury why you would want Mathurin.  Ivey looked like he would of been a huge asset this year after some major improvements (specifically 3 point percentage).  Some think we went on our run because Ivey went down.  I am not one of them and think they were already on the run with him.  Would you trade Ivey for Mathurin straight up?  I remember this being a huge discussion on who they should take (Murray was also in that discussion before he got taken before Ivey).

Ivey was projected to have the better ceiling if all went in his favor, which is why you take him. I think it was still the right pick. He's dealt with a train wreck of a coach/franchise and was just starting to show his value when the Orlando Rollerderby took him down, so we'll have to see how things go this year.

As for a straight up trade right now, their offensive numbers are actually about the same. Ivey is the better 3 point shooter and Mathurin is the better finisher. Mathurin also has a chance to become a more versatile defender due to his size, but he really isn't a good defender right now either.

I wouldn't make the trade because I think Mathurin has had more time to show what he is and that picture is becoming clearer, while I think Ivey is just as good offensively right now but still has the higher ceiling. That's doesn't mean I wouldn't package Ivey in a trade for an All-Star Forward, but either way I value him higher than Mathurin.

Curious to see what the Pistons do this offseason. Trajan seems to be very measured in his approach. He may just look to improve on the margins (THJ, Fontecchio, etc) and see what happens with the young core.

Then again, the East is now wide open. You have injuries to stars on Boston, Indy, and Milwaukee that will keep them out for the entire season. Cleveland may have capped out as a second round team. Orlando improved but still has question marks. And we were a healthy Beef Stew (or a legitimate referee) away from beating NYK. The Pistons could easily move into ECF contention.

It'll be interesting to see if Trajan bets on finding a second star in this group or tries to find a trade. Then again, there might not be a trade out there that makes sense, so he could kick the can down the road to the deadline.

Wow.  Really puts a number on a Duren extension, since Gafford is a better player.

And before anyone tries to argue that.  You don't have to hide Gafford on Josh Hart in a playoff series.

I'm not in favor of a Duren extension. But if you're telling me we can do it for less than 20M a year, I'm taking that deal. Even if you wanted to go in a different direction later, that's a tradeable contract.

Sounds like the stuff you say after you've already called the teams who have players you want and realized they aren't for sale or cost too much. Hopefully they at least do some work around the edges and pursue someone like NAW. I really don't want to see all three of those vets come back (THJ, Beasley, Schroeder).

I put very little stock into what GMs say in a presser but it's pretty much in line with what I expected the Pistons to do. There was some real chemistry with the group and with a talent like Ivey returning to an ascending team, I fully expect Langdon to run it back to see how this group grows together.

Personally, I have some reservations. I'm unsure of the Ivey fit and I think the Pistons record was a little inflated by them beating up on a lot of mediocre to bad teams. I could see a little regression tbh as they now have expectations which is tough for some young teams to live up to after a breakout season. Also, Beasley was their 2nd best player often times last season, that's unsustainable. Ivey needs to be the real deal and/or Ausar or Holland need to take a big step forward.

I don’t think you have to worry about the trio of vets coming back.  Ivey’s return would eat a bunch of those minutes.

Odds of landing a big time player were probably always small.  They became non-existent after what Orlando paid for Bain.  The Pistons don't have the capital to make trades like that right now without giving up too many young guys.

Ivey and Duren are eligible for extensions this summer.  Here is what max extensions would look like based on the 2026/27 cap projection of $170 million.

Ignore the 35% level.  There is no path for someone their age to become eligible for that.  To hit the 30% they need to win MVP, DPOY, or make all nba next year.  So 25% is the most likely.
