playing on the road allows teams to target our 3rd pair defense more.  mcdavid line against hamonic and johannson is just unfair.

2-0 oilers.

schedule loss.

You know, I've been hearing there might be a guy coming on the market who could help fix that....

Quinn Hughes wouldn't fix 3rd pairing issues in and of himself...

Obviously.

But...

Are you talking about the trickle down effect?

Because I could see a Hughes-Seider pairing as spectacular...

Pushing Edvinsson down to pair with ASP. Hopefully, they learned their early season lesson and will play better with less mistakes (that pressure is on ASP... but it would also then be on Simon as well...).

And... DREAM COME TRUE!!! Chiarot would then be 3rd pair LHD!

So, a few things:

1) I don't want ASP in a Hughes trade. We're already short on RHD, sending out ASP would be asinine. We've gotta keep him simply because we've got to keep him. Unless, everyone is eager to see Hamonic on the 2nd pair with Simon?

2) There are lots of defenseman in our system, they can take a LHD instead. I would hate to part with Buium, but you gotta give something to get something so... I can only hope that Stevie is such a sweet talker that they take Wallinder instead.

3) Bottom pairing of... Chiarot-JBD? Please yes. I hate Hamonic so much this year. Johansson is a -14 so far this year. His time has basically been split 50/50 with him on 3rd pair with either Hamonic or JBD. Hamonic is a -12 this year. JBD is a +/- of 0. In other words, a Johansson-Hamonic pairing is ****, a Johansson-JBD pairing is at least adequate.

So...

4) Can we include Hamonic in the trade... just to match salaries? Please?

5) Please call up Holl. I know everyone here hates him... but a 3rd pair of Chiarot and either Holl or JBD to me would at least be adequate, and defensively responsible.

6) Johansson and Holl as 7th and 8th D makes me feel warm and fuzzies and... also comfortable, with our depth.

7) last item is... Chiarot may still slip onto the 2nd pair occasionally to pair with ASP. I'm fine with that. But the ideal would be Simon-ASP so, please GROW UP FAST ASP and Simon!!! ASP... LISTED to EVERYTHING that Hughes tells you... and please implement.

Just my 2 cents.

I thought of you as soon as I saw the tweet so I figured I had to throw it in here!

One of these days I've got to meet him. Not as a fanboy (I'm 58), but because I think he'd get a chuckle that someone has been wearing his jersey since 1984 to probably a couple dozen games in half a dozen NHL rinks. Ogrodnick is still quite active in alumni events, including as recently as the 100th anniversary week in November. I had been home to Sarnia the week before so just missed that (also was home last week but no Wings games so I went to Bucks @ Pistons instead, my first time in LCA in a few years).

all the talk of vancouver wanting centers and there isnt one center in that whole group.

rossi is too small, ohgren is a wing, and buium is defense.

buium is the prize, i guess.  rossi was benched in the playoffs and ohgren has 5 points in 42 nhl games.

i guess its the equaivalent of kasper, mbn, and asp plus a first rounder.

asp is not the equivalent of buium.  edvinsson is.

would any if you have traded a first, danielson, edvinsson, and mbn for hughes?

nah - Simon and Danielson together would have been too much. But Yzerman still needs to do something about the his third D pairing even if it's not a home run like Hughes.

I am not shocked that the Canucks took that deal.  Buium seems to be a real good get.  I'm a little shocked the Wild made that deal.  They must think Kaprizov + Hughes will be able to provide enough offense and that Wallstedt is for real.  Because right now they have Vlad Tarasenko and Danila Yurov on their top line.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Wild trade Hughes in the offseason or next season.  I just don't see that roster having enough success that Quinn forgoes going to New Jersey for it.

would you have matched it if you were detroit?

Not if I'm losing Edvinsson, that would always be a dealbreaker for me with the impossibility of an extension for Hughes.  Even with an extension I'm not sure I would.

me neither.  seider/edvinsson is one of the best pairings in the league.  my only concern would be if they cant re-sign edvinsson.

No, too much and I'd rather take the chance that Hughes makes it to free agency and we could get him for just... money.

I think they can find a way to sign Simon.

Also, if Hughes is too expensive after extending Simon then....

I just hope ASP and Buium develop enough that we can see a Buium-Seider top pair and a Simon-ASP 2nd pair... That actually turn into dangerous two-way D-pairings (all 4 players, not just Mo & Simon).

That's still a season a half away.  They're just going to need to find ways to get better in that time without Hughes being part of it.

from the athletic:

"So we’ve got one of the best players in the world for a defenseman who might be a top-pair defenseman one day (but also might not be), an undersized second-line center, a player who likely won’t contribute and a below-average first round pick. Is that really that much of a haul for what Hughes brings to the table? That feels good as a rental price, but for two years it feels light for Hughes, one of the best trade assets to hit the market in the salary-cap era."

ouch vancouver.
