when did tanking start?

Not a direct answer, but it's been going on for a long time.

What is tanking? A history of the NBA's controversial lottery strategy

Quote

The first three decades of the NBA draft were both simple and calculating. The first two picks were decided by a coin flip between the bottom two teams and the remaining teams filled out the first round in reverse order of their records.

Over time, this generated a race to the bottom which reached a peak in the 1980s.

In his first season as owner of the then San Diego Clippers, Donald Sterling, no stranger to scandal, reportedly insisted the Clippers finish last in the standings so they could “draft a player like Ralph Sampson.”

Several years later, the Houston Rockets seemed to take a page out of Sterling’s book and intentionally bench their starters with the 1984 draft on the horizon. Houston selected 12-time NBA All-Star Hakeem Olajuwon with the No. 1 overall pick.

The NBA had a tanking problem on its hands that could no longer be ignored.

Telling ya, don't let restaurant owners get involved owning NBA teams.  What a rinky-dink operation.  You didn't book the hotel the minute the schedule came out?

Awww, did the pampered stars not get pampered enough? They had to take a little drive before the game. I'm just imagining players from the 80s reading this and rolling their eyes.

What?

Class continues to be dead.  Celebrating yourself when you're still playing is what we would have called bush league once. Not to mention he is already wearing a big '23' on his jersey - so even weirder.

Disagree.  Much more difficult to find a Reaves type player than an anchor.  Keep Reaves and go do what Dallas did.  Bring in Gafford cheap, draft a Lively.  Heck, you might be able to get Gafford right now, and he is set to make $18 million per the next 2 years.

I thought maybe JJJ was represented by Paul or Klutch.  But his agents work for CAA.

I think we might be seeing one negative aspect of NIL money in college sports with Darryn Peterson at Kansas.

He has only played in 7 of their 16 games. In all 7 games he has been pulled due to his leg cramping.

I think he keeps trying to play because of his NIL deal. He should just shut it down and get healthy for the draft. He will go top 3 and that comes with a $40 million contract. Give back the NIL money if you have to, think of the bigger picture.
