AlaskanTigersFan Posted Thursday at 04:40 PM Posted Thursday at 04:40 PM Just looking for a clean topic to get input. I saw Mike McDaniels was just fired by the Dolphins. If I remember correctly, he was considered one of the most brilliant offensive minds in football which is why he was hired........... Take a shot on him? Who do you guys think would be a good OC for the Lions? Quote

Jason_R Posted Thursday at 06:39 PM Posted Thursday at 06:39 PM Brad needs to postpone his press conference and get on the phone to Mike McDaniel. Quote
GalagaGuy Posted Thursday at 08:40 PM Posted Thursday at 08:40 PM Do teams consider McDaniel a viable option for their head coaching vacancy, or is his time in Miami viewed as evidence that he wasn't up to the task? That's impossible for us fans to know. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Thursday at 08:43 PM Posted Thursday at 08:43 PM I think he’ll get head coaching interviews. The Lions have to be the top OC job available. 1 Quote

That's impossible for us fans to know. I think he will need a few years away first. He's not Urban Meyer or Hue Jackson who will never see an NFL sideline again. But the culture in Miami was a big problem. They were soft and he lacked control. It's why I think coming to Detroit and learning from Campbell could be a win-win for both sides. Quote

Motown Bombers Posted Thursday at 08:48 PM Posted Thursday at 08:48 PM The Lions personnel wise are identical to Miami but only better. Quote
Motown Bombers Posted Thursday at 08:52 PM Posted Thursday at 08:52 PM I didn’t watch Miami a lot, but I liked the way they used Achane and Hill. Gibbs and Williams would feast in his offense. Quote
Jason_R Posted Thursday at 09:15 PM Posted Thursday at 09:15 PM McDaniel flamed out at the end with weird press conferences. If I were an owner I would not want him as my head coach. But put that mad scientist of offense in the lab and let him cook. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted Thursday at 10:26 PM Posted Thursday at 10:26 PM Maybe Holmes and Campbell are changing their tune this offseason and will look outside the organization for help. I love seeing this at least being reported that the Lions are looking in a different direction. Quote
MichiganCardinal Posted Thursday at 10:53 PM Posted Thursday at 10:53 PM I think an interesting thing about Rapoport's report is that it almost certainly came from the McDaniel camp. The Lions have no one to impress by leaking who they're interested in at OC. Just like the "7 teams reached out to John Harbaugh within 45 minutes" story, it's coming from the agent trying to spin their newly unemployed client as a mastermind who was unjustly fired. Except this time it was for the Lions OC job, not a head coach job. Based on that I'm not sure McDaniel will garner interest as a head coach, but I do think he is interested in the Lions OC gig. TBD if it's mutual or just due diligence by the Lions. Quote
1984Echoes Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago Jake Peetz, Tee Martin and David Blough... Starting to look like a theme. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted 20 hours ago Posted 20 hours ago I'm being semi-serious when I ask this, but what about hiring Indiana's OC Mike Shanahan? Quote

I wonder if Blough got an offer elsewhere and he gave the Commanders right of first refusal. I don’t think it would have been the Lions, he’d be crazy to take the Commanders offense over the Lions. But something fishy happened there. It could be too that Tee Martin’s agent is fishing for interviews. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Are there any college OCs you'd be interested in the Lions interviewing? After tonight's ass kicking by Indiana to Oregon, I'm alright with the Lions at least exploring the idea of interviewing Shanahan for the OC role. Quote

I think they are looking for fresh perspective, up and coming ideas or new ideas... etc. Dan may actually call plays if one of those guys were hired by the Lions... But I think it would only be short term... until they (the three of Goff/ new OC/ and DC) were certain they were all on the same page with playcalling, specifically during game situations... Which aren't fully realized (as a new playcaller) until those situations are actually staring him in the face. IMO. Quote

I think if someone who hasn’t called plays before is the hire, it will be a more collaborative process. Everyone focuses on the label, but there’s much more to an OC than 60-70 decisions on a Sunday. It’s not quite like Madden where you just select the play from a wide open play book and it happens. Between scripts, game plans, and weekly prep on an opponent, the play caller is more an executor of a collaborative process than an authoritarian voice. But. I think Campbell has struggled as that executor. The Philly game is a prime example, locked in a defensive battle and we went for it on 4th down five times. It felt like in the heat of needing to get a play to Goff, he lost a feel for the game. Quote
