At the time, I thought he was overrated, maybe because he peaked at age 25. Looking back at his numbers today though, he was really good and really consistent his whole career. Maybe you disliked him because he was an a-hole and a racist. Quote

I don't think he's done, though He should sign with the Rockies and hit a bunch of HR in the altitude and some dumb team (The Angels?) will be suckered into something like 3 years, 85 million Quote

How did they not jump right on that in the moment and say it wasn't even close? I understand being cautious on very close calls, but this was not that. Not reviewable? Quote

However, Clark's history on the topic is primarily characterized by that specific, highly publicized dispute rather than a prolonged or officially sanctioned track record of racist behavior. [1] The 1989 Incident The allegations surfaced right before the 1989 World Series. After Clark referred to Leonard as a "tumor" and a "jealous ballplayer" in an interview, Leonard fired back by publicly labeling Clark a "prejudiced bastard". Leonard recounted two incidents from 1987 in which he alleged Clark used racial slurs, including one instance involving Leonard's nephew and another involving teammate Chris Brown. [1, 2] At the time, then-manager Roger Craig reportedly held a team meeting and demanded that Clark apologize for the remarks directed at Brown, which Clark did. [1] The Aftermath While Leonard's claims sparked national attention during the 1989 World Series, Clark had lasting relationships and public friendships with Black teammates, most notably Kevin Mitchell and Willie Mays. While his intense, highly competitive, and sometimes abrasive personality earned him various critiques over his career, the 1989 accusations remain the sole prominent record of racism claims against him Quote
theroundsquare Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago thanks for that, i guess that my request was a 'let me google that for you' type Quote
Tiger337 Posted 3 hours ago Posted 3 hours ago That reminds me how Jeff Leonard was called "penitentiary face", even on national broadcasts. This was widely viewed as funny at the time. Even though I don't think it was mean spirited, it was surely racist and wouldn't be allowed today (at least not on national TV). Just now, I was reading that Dave Bergman was the one who came up with that nickname. He was previously called "prison face", but when he told everybody, he wanted to be called Jeffrey instead Jeff, Bergman changed in to "penitentiary face" Quote

Looks like Bergman and Leonard were teammates for 81,82,83. Quote
