I was not aware of that at the time, but I probably sensed it.  I suspect the game is filled with people like that.  They are good entertainers though.

really?  i was always a fan, what came out?  i sort of expect jocks to be a-holes but the racist part is different

That reminds me how Jeff Leonard was called "penitentiary face", even on national broadcasts.  This was widely viewed as funny at the time.  Even though I don't think it was mean spirited, it was surely racist and wouldn't be allowed today (at least not on national TV).  

Just now, I was reading that Dave Bergman was the one who came up with that nickname.  He was previously called "prison face", but when he told everybody, he wanted to be called Jeffrey instead Jeff, Bergman changed in to "penitentiary face"

Just pulled up the 81 Giants to see how long they were teammates...Kind of crazy that team had many future Tigers on it:  Bergman, Evans, May, Cabell, Herndon, Alexander.

Looks like Bergman and Leonard were teammates for 81,82,83.
