Edman85 Posted June 11 Author Posted June 11 Should get back under by Sunday with three pitchers coming off the IL this weekend. One thing I wanted to point out though: Beau Brieske is on a guaranteed contract, not a split contract. That means if he is sent down this weekend, he makes the same in the minors as the majors and it doesn't help lower the CBT number. Quote

Edman85 Posted June 12 Author Posted June 12 Brieske makes the same in the majors as the minors. Adding Outman adds his prorated $797,500 projected the rest of the way, a bit over $435,000. Hanifee making $795,500 in the bigs, $331,218 in the minors. So going down lowers the bill a bit. I don't know what Waguespack's making. I'm guessing $850,000, just copying what Short is making. Short gets paid his MLB rate while in DFA limbo. If he clears waivers and gets outrighted, he would get prorated $180,000 the rest of the way. If he opts out, the Tigers are off the hook. ... How the sausage is made. I'll put an updated number up after Mize/Skubal return and Short's DFA limbo ends. 2 1 Quote

Unclear, but if it does the effect is very minimal. Sometimes these upward mobility cash deals count, but the cash is on the order of $1 or $1,000 or something like that. Quote
Edman85 Posted July 10 Author Posted July 10 Jones DFA/Valencia recall. Valencia has a bigger MLB/Minor League split than Jones, so if Jones clears waivers and accepts assignment, the move will lead to a very slight increase in the payroll. Players in the majors when DFA'ed get major league play while in limbo, so the length of time Jones is designated is pretty significant here. It ends up leading to a decrease in the payroll if he is claimed or declares free agency. 1 Quote
Edman85 Posted July 12 Author Posted July 12 FYI, I realized yesterday I hadn't moved Lee back to the majors in my calculator. Also, got some intel the benefits number was a bit higher. Waiting to post an update until the Jones DFA is resolved, but once that happens, expect to be about 1.5M over. 1 Quote
Nate7474 Posted July 12 Posted July 12 What are the draft consequences for being over the tax? When do they kick in? Quote
4hzglory Posted July 12 Posted July 12 1 minute ago, Nate7474 said: What are the draft consequences for being over the tax? When do they kick in? We lose our competitive balance pick, which is set to be right after the first round, and if we lose a FA that we offered a QA, the compensation pick drops from after the 1st to after the 4th. So if we wouldn’t resign Skubal and Mize, it would mean losing 3 picks before the 2nd round and gaining 2 after the 4th next year. All assumes things stay the same as this cba Quote

Witz57 Posted July 14 Posted July 14 (edited) Is it realistically possible for them to get under without a trade (like roster changes from people returning from injury)? Or would they need a team to take on a salary dump? Edited July 14 by Witz57 Quote

Or would they need a team to take on a salary dump? Possible but increasingly unlikely. Every player sent down now on a split salary decreases the projection by anywhere from $200k to $400kish depending on their split. There are going to be some 40 man moves, which could naturally lead to some cash deals or teams taking on those salaries (if they are outrighted they are still owed the split contract and that still counts) Edited July 14 by Edman85 1 Quote
Edman85 Posted July 14 Author Posted July 14 (edited) Here's everybody's splits if anybody wanted to play with the numbers yourselves. Anybody who has never been on the 40 man before and on their original contract (e.g either Max in AAA) would be on a minimum $780,000/$127,100 split if they are called up. If Miller or Liranzo are called up, their split increases to $127,100 if sent back down. Anybody who was signed as a minor league free agent's split is determined by their contract. There are maximum and minimum salaries in the Minor League CBA, though. Petzold does a good job reporting on the major league split. I can get ahold of their minor league splits once they are called up. Sometimes they have incentive bonuses. I am confident in everybody's salary split listed. So you would need 6 guys on standard minimum contracts ($3,491.44/day split) to be demoted today (X 75 days) to get under the number. Shelton Posted July 14 Posted July 14 If they don’t “sell” they will still trade a guy like Vierling, Tork, McKinstry to get under the number. Quote

So if we wouldn’t resign Skubal and Mize, it would mean losing 3 picks before the 2nd round and gaining 2 after the 4th next year. All assumes things stay the same as this cba This makes me think that if Skubal refuses to sign an extension, he'll be moved. If he is traded, is that enough to assure us no lost (lowered) pick if we keep Mize? How about just moving Mize abd keeping Skubal? And BTW, thanks for doing this work and posting it. Quote

According to Edman’s numbers, we are currently around $1.5 mil over. That number will go down when Torres and Baez are back. So it doesn’t have to be Skubal or Mize as both of their prorated amounts are higher than that. 1 Quote
