It's not about players not caring. When teams are tanking they're putting scrubs out there. Those player care because it's probably their only chance to show they can play and earn a contract. These aren't the stars making 10s of millions, these are the Daniss Jenkins of the world who get to play when the stars are "injured".

Tanking has never been about the players. It's about the owner, the organization, and coaching staff.

Because of the luxury tax.  Denver would be more than $20 million over it, which means for every dollar they pay Watson they would be hit with a luxury tax of $3.25 for every dollar they pay Watson.  So that $25 million you pay him next year becomes $100 million.  If they are in the tax 3 out of 4 years, the penalties become much larger.  It's why Boston dumped Holiday, Porzingis, and Horford.  Their $280 million salary for the season was going to become $550-$600 million after luxury tax payments.
