Team leaders are not "gritty" though. Gritty is used for a utility player who lacks talent but hustles and fights hard and gets the most out of his abilty. He is usually short, shows his emotion and doesn't shave regularly. A team leader is intense, competitive, hard nosed. The modern term seems to be "gamer".
