Sports_Freak Posted July 29 Posted July 29 McGonigle with a good situational at-bat. Very professional...man on 3rd and less than 2 outs? He didn't try to do too much, just made hard contact to drive the ball deep and get that run home. The kid plays the game the right way. Take note, Riley. Quote

DTroppens Posted July 29 Posted July 29 (edited) If the Tigers move forward and keep Skubal, it means making the playoffs and advancing at least to the World Series is the only acceptable goal for not trading him. I think that's fair to say. And for that reason, looking at head to head records with the teams that the Tigers may have to beat out to get the third WC spot is pretty important. It means they would have to win one more game than some teams in order to get the spot - maybe others tying will be good enough. Where the Tigers are with those that are in that battle for the third WC spot. For the most part it doesn't look very good right now. Baltimore 2-3 (Winning today though. What is the next tiebreaker?) Cleveland 0-6 (seven games left) Minnesota 2-5 (six games left) Houston 2-5 (done) Chicago 3-3 (seven games left) Boston 2-5 (done) Seattle 2-1 (three games left) Based on this, the Tigers would love to see the Indians win the Central and see Chicago collapse to the point that these two teams are facing off for the WC3 spot. The same is true with Houston and Texas. The Tigers are 4-2 against the Rangers. But again, in both cases, Chicago and Texas would have to collapse to the point that they'd be only fighting for the third WC spot. Of course, the Tigers could go crazy and get a higher WC spot and make this point moot, but I thought some people may like to see this. I wanted to. So most of the teams the Tigers probably would be most likely to need to beat for a WC 3 spot (Cleveland, Minnesota, Houston and Boston) , have better records right now. They do have the edge against Seattle and this puts a lot more emphasis on those last three with the Mariners. Edited July 29 by DTroppens 1 Quote
IdahoBert Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Javier Báez singles on a ground ball to right fielder Tyler O'Neill. Zach McKinstry scores. Quote
NorthWoods Posted July 29 Posted July 29 We've learned that Javy is the straw that stirs the drink for this team. Quote
IdahoBert Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Matty blew out a hamstring? Is almost every guy on this team “Mr. Glass?“ Quote

IdahoBert Posted July 29 Posted July 29 How did Lou Gehrig and Cal Ripken never get injured? Did they not play very hard or somethin? I find that hard to believe… Maybe they were just physically gifted to the point that they couldn’t get hurt? Quote
IdahoBert Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Go ahead, Dingler! Get a hit make my day! Make the magic number real! Quote

I guess the reason I want the Tigers to keep Skubal is just because he's so damned good. He makes watching the game very interesting. Could we sneak into the playoffs without him? Maybe, but we're a better team with him. I really think Harris will only be trading him if it's an offer that blows him away. He's not afraid of getting a draft pick for him, I think. 🤫🤫 Quote

IdahoBert Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Scoob at a very manageable low pitch count after six. I hope he didn’t get the handshake. I’m not watching right now. Quote
JackMorrisStache Posted July 29 Posted July 29 I firmly believe that Skubal needs to fire Scott Boras and prove to the Detroit faithful that he truly wants to be here by taking a home town discount. It would be a shame to lose this guy, he is so freaking good! I mean, how much money is enough? Whatever the value of his next contract, his family and his children’s families will be set for life. Do it for Detroit, Tarik! Do it for us Motown Sportsters! Quote
IdahoBert Posted July 29 Posted July 29 Wow, Rogers must really hate his infielders right now… And I wouldn’t blame him… Quote

I think that's fair to say. I disagree with this part. From an organization standpoint, there is considerable value in making the playoffs and even advancing 1 round. There are considerable extra $, and the extra playoff experience for guys, especially McGonigle/Lee/Clark (who will be up at that time IMO) Jobe/Melton/etc is worth a lot too. I don't think it's a World Series or failure at all. I do think heading into the playoffs with Skubal and a 3-4 man rotation depending on the series, potentially even makes us favorites to get to the World Series though. Quote

I’d rather have Jung back up at this point. And Vierling goes 2 for 2 with a triple, and when he leaves with an injury, McKinstry doubles. Quote
