The Indian independence movement and the Civil Rights movement were largely non-violent. Ditto the end of East Germany. However, the scene in "Gandhi" where Candace Bergen asks how nonviolence would work against Hitler is pretty salient. These people are Nazis. They want a violent reaction to anything that smells of protest.
