No match so far for the Panthers. 4/2 late 2nd.

I couldn’t care less about commercialization. Outfield walls used to be one giant billboard a century ago. Radio broadcasts on YouTube from the 1930s show how MLB announcers of the era were pitching a different product at every at bat. I just hate Bally’s crawl and then the beep beep cartoon cars moving up and down the endboards as I’m trying to follow the puck. It’s cheap, I feel like I’m watching poker on ESPN on a Tuesday afternoon. Canadian broadcasters aren’t doing that. TNT may have digital ads, but its screen is cleaner for hockey than Bally’s and the add-ons it does use, such as names of players on the ice, does have utility for the game I’m watching.

I think we've slowly raised our expectations for them. As much as they still frustrate at times, putting it into perspective this has been a very strong start to year, almost 1/3 of the way in: - Record of 6-2-2 in past 10 - Road record on the year of 6-3-2 - 12th overall in points, but just 3 points behind 5th - Tied with Tampa in points, but more points than last year's three other conference finalists Colorado, NY Rangers and Edmonton -Of the summer darlings as far as who would be most improved, the Wings are 8 points up on Buffalo and 10 points up on Ottawa - Currently in an Eastern Conference playoff position - Have done so without contributions from Bertuzzi or Vrana, few players seem to be producing at unsustainable rate except maybe Husso (I think Husso is that good, but a bit nervous about overworking risk from the 18gp-8gp split with Ned) and Kubalik (good pickup, but don't expect him to finish season as a PPG player).

Good thread on the digital board ads. The ads, especially the animated ones, plus the Bally scrawl, definitely impair my viewing experience. If I had a choice of removing the but having the Wings wear yellow jerseys, even that would be better.

Win of the year even though 3rd period was TB 27-7 SOG domination. Wings have refused to allow lengthy slumps develop this season. 4-2 final.
-
Thank you to Tampa for keeping the goalie out down only a goal with a few minutes to go. Because Wings quickly convert an ENG. Still not over though, 3-1 with 3 minutes to go.

When will I learn not to open my big mouth. Lightning score 13 seconds after I posted.
-
Wings 6 minutes away. Lightning are possessing the puck around 90% of the time past several minutes but not particularly dangerous …yet.
-
Wings holding in their own through the 1st period. If anything, they should leading. 0-0 after 1.

I think it warrants a 1-game regular season suspension.

I think you both (Sloth and Gehringer) are probably right about Berggren. He could well turn into solid NHLer. I was just hoping for one of the four picks to really break out from their draft position and well exceed expectations. I think Zadina is a below-average #5-#7 pick, not even considering that on draft day we felt we had stolen a #3 or so. Berggren seems fine for a #33 overall, but nothing that special. I don't think a re-draft of Veleno would put him any higher than his #30, probably lower. And who knows about McIsaac, snakebit. I don't have an Atlantic subscription so not sure what they came up with.

750,000 Moroccans live in Spain. Two countries separated by 8 miles across strait of Gibraltar at narrowest point. Madrid-born player strikes winning penalty in shootout to knock out Spain. -
The 3 Heisman finalists are Caleb Williams, Stetson Bennett and Max Duggan. Pretty sure that if Corum had been healthy and had OSU and Purdue games comparable to what Donovan Edwards had, he'd be not only a finalist but a possible winner, or at least a sure 2nd behind Caleb Williams. EDIT: Stroud in there as well. So 4? I always thought it was 3, maybe I'm mistaken. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/35191489/bennett-williams-duggan-stroud-named-finalists-heisman

Something tells me Richarlison spent a lot of time playing beach soccer growing up. -
Can't see how Eric All is helping himself out with those comments. Get a new team, cool down, and make those comments in September if you wish.

What a beautiful half by Brazil. -
Columbus a reliable mini-slump buster.

Blowing a 3-goal lead to Columbus would be a season low. 3-2 now but with still 18 minutes to go in regulation.

This Saturday’s France-England quarter is giving me a Michigan-Ohio State vibe. I think it’s England’s time, they will break through and knock out the defending champs. No one in the tournament, apart form Brazil, is in the same talent league as these two countries. -
Zadina was a wasted pick. I had such high hopes for all their top-40 picks that year. None of Zadina, Veleno, Berggren or McIsaac look to be future difference-makers.
-
The Wings are still a borderline playoff team. Nothing more, but also nothing less.

I agree with him there. It was a decisive win by Michigan on the road. But 22 points? I think that does overstate the margin between the two. Felt more like a 2-score game. Michigan was outplayed in the 1st half and trailed by a FG going into the break. Asserted control from the outset of the 3rd quarter and as the 2nd half went on. But when it was 38-23 and OSU got a 1st down in the red zone with around 5 minutes to go, it was a 2-score game, I expected it to end as a 1-score game and in fact if a supreme being at that point in time had offered me a 1-point win on a missed extra point conversion I would have taken it! Games that feel like 22-point wins are Georgia's wins this year over Oregon, Tennessee and LSU, Georgia's win last year over Michigan, and Michigan's wins this year over Penn State and Michigan State.
