  1. Something already stinks. It was too pretty of a bow to put on day when the translater pleads guilty, Ohtoni is cleared and his case closed, AND 5 AAAA guys were caught betting on baseball. I think MLB is telling other more high profile guys "we know". I don't think the sports book notified MLB on of the kindness of their heart that these 5 guys were betting. I think it was probably a condition baseball put on ALL the sports books in order to climb in bed together. "We'll take your money and promote you, but you will let us know if any player places a bet". I'm sure there are a lot of cousin Eddie's and uncle Dueces out there placing bets for players as well. Someone will get caught eventually.
  2. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/40275531/tucupita-marcano-gets-life-mlb-ban-betting-baseball Along with Marcano, 4 other current players with MLB experience were given 1 year suspensions. All 4 are detailed in the above article, did not bet on their current teams, and placed low wagers. It should also be pointed out all lost badly. I think this will become just as big of a headache for MLB as PEDs were 20 years ago. Not many people are going to Blink an eye at the above 5 players, not many have heard of them. But the mud will hit the fan when the first star is caught. I'm sure many players are having cousin eddy place bets on their behalf, and that could be be a bigger mess. It would not surprise me to see Duece behind all of this.

  4. Back in the mid to late 90's, Gibson and Josh Lewin were among the best teams in baseball. Gibson was humbled by then, and had great insights into the game. Lewin was as good and professional as they come. Gibson went into coaching/managing, Lewin moved onto Texas I believe, and we had garbage for the next 15 years. I have no problem with Gibson now, as he is battling his disease in the only way he probably knows how, to hit it head on and keep working. Yes, parkenins and the medicines have left him with a higher pitched voice and much slower cadence. But, he still has the insight.
  5. Your post must have made its way down to Carp. Good job!
  6. Whatever it is I hope he is back by the 4th inning so I get Dan back on the radio.
  7. You know all this talk about Spencer reminds me of another 1st round draft pick by the Tigers who was much heralded as the greatest thing since sliced bread coming out of college. He too made his debut at age 22, and struggled mightily his first 3 years in the majors. More so than Spencer, and it can be argued he was a worse defender than Tork. That player went on to a 17-year career, 2 WS championships, and an MVP award. That of course was Kirk Gibson. I think everyone one of us would be thrilled if Spencer had that career. Or even the career of Bob Horner. Point is that not everyone, and maybe only a couple of people a generation come up and play like gangbusters and keep it up for their entire career. He is still figuring things out, and there will good and bad days. Way too early to write him off.
  8. Using that theory, the Pirates last denied Cobb the World Series in 1909. Do you hold a grudge against them as well?
  9. Yes. And second star goes to Alex, who kept the door shut for two innings.
  10. Good job Alex.
  11. Yes, bobby scales. He did about 1/2 the road games with Dan last year. He definitely has good potential in the booth.
  12. Kevin pillar is still in the league? Seems like he has been around forever.
  13. Let's not forget that both Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle were banned for life for there associations with casinos and then let back into baseball with the next regime (Uberoth). Now baseball is fully in bed with casinos. Rose is a HOF player and should be there.
  14. And is the grandson of 4x allstar third basemen Don Money.
  15. That is a really nice Gehrig! I collected for 35 years before I moved down to VA 9 years ago now. I sold 99% of what I had at a high profile memorabilia auction, and don't regret it or really miss it at all. I kept some stuff that was very personal to me, and some very random stuff like I didn't mean to keep. Like I came across a few autographed Rickey Peters cards the other day in a random box. But, I still salivate at a lot of stuff, like the cards posted in this thread.
  16. I dream of a find like that...
  17. Sweet may be a surprising piece in the bullpen this year, stay the summer in toledo, or be released before spring training. But being on 4 teams 40-man roster in 6 months is impressive. More impressive, he only had two good outings out of ten, managed to pick up a win, AND stay in the show for 47 days. (Enough time to qualify for a pension.) Maybe luck is on his side and he will be useful.
  18. Well, let's dissect like you wanted. Reyes' slash line last year in AAA was .279/.330/.462 with 20 homeruns, and an ops of .792. The Lotte Giants finished 7/10 in the KBO with a record of 67-76. Of note, Niko Goodrum hit .295/.373/.387 with 0 hrs and an ops of .760 for these same Giants. Does the Reyes signing make the Giants better? Contenders? Or does the addition of Reyes make both him and Goodrum revert back to their Tiger norms? I would love to hear any and all thoughts!

  20. Back in '92 or '93, mickey stanley played in a charity softball game at CMU. I had a friend who was a journalism major who interviewed him, and I got to tag along. He asked Mickey what was the biggest difference between players today and his era. Without batting an eye, he said "money". Then my friend followed up with something like " besides that?". Then Mickey said, "training. These guys can play baseball year around now. I had to go to work in the off season". He seemed pretty bitter about it.
  21. RIP Willie. I met him once in 2009 and he could not have been a nicer, more down to earth guy. He seamed to be really enjoying retirement and his family. I did not know about his heart problems until today. I also didn't know he tried to make a comeback with the Yankees in 1995 at age 40. Any else remember that?
  22. Interesting side story: Milt Wilcox once told me a story that **** Allen Always wore sleeves under his jersey because he thought pitchers would be intimidated by his muscles and not pitch to him. Wilcox also said Allen hit a homerun off of him in old Comisky Park that is still going.
  23. That was not what I expected. AZ to the series.
