Finnigan seems like one of those deals that for years most all of us would say, "man, it only took that much to get that guy? Why weren't we in on him?" Well, this year we were. DD had a good habit of trading prospects for established stars who never did much. The one example that always sticks out to me is getting Gary Sheffield for three players who totaled 8 games played and a -.5 war in the majors. AA had the same strategy, but reverse. Trade our veterans for guys who did next to nothing. I think (hope), SH is going to follow the DD formula.

You can add Joe Cobb to that list. He is the Tiger's version of Moonlight Graham. 1918 1 plate apperance, 1 walk as a pinch hitter. That's it. Did not appear in the field.

If this is true, and there is no more evidence that something is amiss, it is a rabbit hole I don't want to go down. If you can take out a team's closer for a sinificant amount of time just by betting, and get a group of people to bet the same thing, because the pitcger has a patteren you figured out, that could be catastophic. Say our best hitter takes the first pitch 65% of the time. As a gambler, and a fan of the opposing team, you can have your whole fan base make that bet. Then the gaming industry says whoa, we just lost a bunch of money we nedd to i vestigate. Baseball says something looks fishy. You have to swing at the first pitch more. You might laugh, but that very well could happen.

I've posted a lot about Whitaker over the years, he is my favorite all time player. I've shared this story on the old board, but I will here again. When Lou was a rookie, hitting coach Gates Brown was giving him some "advice" in the batting cage. Whitaker said something to the effect, "I know how to hit." I don't know if Joe Falls was standing right there, or if he heard the story second hand, but he printed it, and in a such a way it made Lou look cocky and uncoachable. In reality, he was just being his very confident self, and was not showing up Brown. But after that, he was quiet to the media. I've never seen a time when he went after the media, he would just not say more than he wanted to, which wasn't very much. He just let his play to the talking for him. Which, as we've discussed many times, is HOF worthy. He may get the **** Allen treatment and be elected after he dies, and then labeled "misunderstood." But, in my opinion, he never tried to be more than he was to please anyone. He was just a quiet, deeply religious person who was a great baseball player.

There was a game in the Mid 70s where Nolan Ryan went 13 innings and threw 220 some pitches. He was out done by his opponent, Luis Tiant, who went. 14 innings. I think Boston won that game. Both pitchers made their next start on regular (3 days) rest.

I'm listening to MLB audio and have gameday up. Gameday is about 30 seconds ahead of the audio feed.

I saw that once in a high school game. Our player got hit in the leg, it glanced off him and hit the catcher in the shin guard. Then it bounced up and hit the ump in the place we don't talk about. He went down like he was shot. He was a terrible ump, none of us in the dugout were upset about that.

A while back when this came up I said I wouldn't trade Max Clark straight up for Paul Skenes. That still stands.

Dan just said Dylan Smith got sent down after having the best outing of his brief career and picking up his first W. Baseball is a tough game. -

That is not true. Any reliever that comes in at any time with the lead, as long as their team maintains the lead until the end of the game, is eligible for the win. It is only the starter who has to go. 5 innings to get the win. In theory, you could have a 9 inning save. Say visiting team scores 6 run in the first inning like the tigers did in game 1 today. The starting pitcher in the bottom of the first gets hurt before recording an out. A reliever comes in, he is now the pitcher of record. He gives up 3 runs and also does not record an out. Another reliever comes in and gets 3 outs without giving up anymore runs. That same reliever (the third pitcher) pitches the rest of the game, 9 complete innings, and the score stays the same, 6-3. The official scorer can give the win to the second or third pitcher, his discreation. If he gives it to the second pitcher, then the third pitcher gets the save for going 3+ innings and finishing the game. -

Officially, the official score can give the win to which ever reliever they feel pitched the best. It rarely happens that way, but that is the rule. In this case, it makes much more sense to give the win to Smith who pitched the best amongst the relievers, instead of Hurter, who would have usually been the choice. Then Smith would have earned a save, because he pitched at least 3 innings in relief and finished the game, no matter the score. -
In part, yes. But I remember Campbell being one of the Major GMs behind collusion. He was incredibly cheap and set in his ways. If I remember correctly, it was Campbell who didn't want to spend the money, not Monaghan. And when Campbell finally left in '90, he was replaced by Bo, who was not a baseball man at all.

My driveway is dry. Which is good, because I'm going to see the Pulaski River Turtles take on the Bluefield Ridge Runners (Appy League) tonight. The Ridge Runners are managed by former Pirate Jack Wilson, who I remembered as a Tiger Killer back in the oughts. So I looked up the numbers, and he had 3 great series against us. We only played the Pirates about once every two years on average then.

More proof the White Sox have the "best" fans in baseball. https://www.azcentral.com/story/sports/mlb/diamondbacks/2025/06/24/arizona-diamondbacks-ketel-marte-breaks-down-midgame-after-fans-comment/84346484007/ Hopefully the fan gets a permenent ban fro Chicago.

That is a nice set! The 78 set is my favorite, that is when I really started collecting. Twice in my life I started out to get the '78 set completely autographed. The first time I had a few of the really tough ones in there: Bostock, Burke, Vuckovich, Martin, and a few others. I was in college then, really needed to pay rent, so I sold it about 1/3 complete. Started it again about 20 years later, and had a really hard time finding legit autos of the toughies, and stopped. The hardest one in that set is the Thurman Munson. He didn't like to sign, he didn't sign through the mail, and card was only out for about 18 months before his death. I have never see one I thought was legit for sale. The Bostock is also really tough, but he was a willing signer so there are a few more of those out there.

Unfortunently I remember that well. The Tigers and Phillies teamed up and created "vote for Brantorino". Which was Brandon Inge for the AL and Shane Victorino for the NL's last spots. It was very annoying, the announcers at the time were harping on it every three seconds to vote "Brantorino". It worked, both got the final spot in their respective league.

I'm going just by memory, but I seem to recall the Royals making a huge deal out of it when Paul Splitorff retired. Of course, he had a much longer career with the Royals than Moose.

Baez will hit 10 years service time towards the end of the season.

Players get their "Golden Ticket" after 8 years of service time. It allows them (and a guest) enterence into any MLB regular season game, not the playoffs. I once asked Dave Rozema if I could see his, and he said he never carried it with him. It would be interesting to know how many players actually do.
-
Congrats indeed! This is actually incredibly hard to do. The article states that less than 10% achieve this, when I did research on the topic about a year ago, I found a stat that said 8%. And I believe he is the only one on the roster with that much service time.

In a spiritual context, squirrels often symbolize preparation for the future, a balance between work and play, and finding joy in the mundane. They can represent the importance of saving and planning, but also the ability to be flexible and adaptable when life throws unexpected curveballs. Additionally, squirrels can be seen as messengers, intuitives, and possessors of a quiet wisdom. This fits the 2025 Tiger bullpen well.

Too bad his name isn't John. Then you would have John Deer Greene. He could write his name in letters 3' high on the outfield wall.
