listening to this game on white sox radio and the post game on chicaho sports radio was really fun. a meltdown culminated by javy baez beating the sox made them so mad. it was great. -
if you look waaaaaaaaay up in yhe corner you'll see me trying to keep my 7 year old interested in the game...
-
bringing my kids to their first red wings game this saturday, so they better win!
-
i wouldnt take walker or johnson at #2. i would take thibs or hutch.
-
johnson has a similar athletic profile to travon walker, but not quite as good. unlike walker, johnson was actually productive as a pass rushing defensive end in college and was one of the best - if not the best - pass rushing end at the senior bowl practices.

sotomayor is probably closest to thomas in their upbringing, coming from working class bronx to princeton and then yale. unlike thomas, sotomayor openly credits affirmative action for her being able to go to princeton and acknowledges struggling to compete once there. but instead of being bitter about it (like thomas), she worked hard and caught up, eventually excelling. sotomayor, thomas, and president obama were all beneficiaries of affirmative action. and that's not a sleight to any of them. in fact, its an advertisement for keeping affirmative action as those are examples of the success it can foster to people who are given a chance to get into the best schools who dont come from your usual rich private high schools.

kentaji brown was born in dc but moved to miami. she was the daughter of a lawyer and a school administrator. she attended one of the best high schools in the miami area (the same school as jeff bezos) before being accepted to harvard, where she excelled. she then went to harvard law school. after graduating from harvard, she clerked for three judges (including stephen breyer) and spent a year doing corporate work at one of the most prestigious law firms in boston. she then spent three more years in corporate private practice before working going to work as an assistant federal public defender in DC (as an fyi to you non lawyers, an assistant federal PD is a prestigious and well paid position, she was not slumming it as a poorly paid county public defender). she was appointed by obama to the federal sentencing guideline commission. from there she went back to corporate work at one of the biggest and most successful corporate firms in america doing appellate work. in 2012 she was appointed a district court judge. in 2021 she was appointed to the dc circuit court of appeals by biden as a precursor for a supreme court. like all the members of the supteme court, she has had an exceptional career and is well qualified to sit on the highest court in america.

thomas was raised by a single mother one generation removed from slavery. raised in extreme poverty as a child, he was eventually taken in by his grandparents after he was homeless for a while because his house burned down. from there his grandparents got him into a local catholic school where he excelled enough to get accepted to catholic college. he did not grow upnspeaking english so he decided to major in english in college and did so, doing well enough to get accepted into yale law school. after graduating and failing to get a job at a white shoe law firm (because of racism), thomas went to work as an AG in missouri under soon to be senator danforth. from there he spent a brief time in the corporate world before resuming a government career, moving to a few different agencies before heading up the eeoc. from there he was appointed to the supreme court to replace the legendary but decrepit thurgood marshall. unlike marshall, thomas doesnt believe in affirmative action or abortion rights, so he received little support from liberals. the anita hill controversy made his nomination even more controversial. he passed a democratic controlled senate 52-48. since then, he's been one of the most influential justices in recent court history. the "originalism" constitutional analysis and the adherence to strict construction of interpreting statutes has become mainstream in conservative legal circles and is now the dominant legal theory on the court. it was not when thomas got there and the use of outside documents and sources to interpret the law (legislative history, etc) was much more prominant. thomas is also one of the best writers on the court. he is brief and concise and, unlike scalia, his opinions are easy to read, explain, and much more pleasant and largely free of the pot shots scalia threw in to his political adversaries. from abject poverty and homelessness, a non-english speaking grandson of southern slaves who was raised without running water in his home rose to go to yale law school and become a justice on the supreme court. thomas may be THE most exceptional member on the current supreme court.

but the pff mock draft tool let me trade #2 to the jets for #4, #10, and their first and third round picks next year. jags should totally get on the phone and call the jets.
-
better root for the lions to be 2-15 next year or else they wont have a shot at either of those guys (if they live up to the hype). unless you want to trade the lions' first round pick for the next three years.
-
i would agree with that.
-
i took "exceptional" in that quote to be "outstanding or very good." nothing in her record suggests she will be any better (or worse) than any other justice.
-
i dont really know what they should do at qb. everyone seems to say that this qb class is bad, so the lions shouldnt draft one. but these are the same people who gave ol mitch trubisky a 7.0 grade and said he was destined for greatness. so who knows? not me. at this point, i'll probably be happy with anyone holmes' drafts because of his reputation and how well his first draft class performed. ah, who am i fooling, i'll still find something to bitch about. lol.
-
what makes her an exceptional justice other than the fact that she was picked by a democrat?

i mean, it was snowing earlier... -
mb doesnt think goff is good? could have fooled me. i dont either of them are particularly good, but trubisky is cheaper and can run well so i dont think pittsburgh's qb situation is worse than detroit's cause they both need a long term solution at qb.
-
if trubisky were on the lions, mb would say he was good. he's the same as goff: an average qb who sometimes plays well enough to win and sometimes is terrible. the thing with trubisky is he can run, which goff cant. so, as i said, the qb situation in detroit and pittsburgh is similar, but trubisky is cheaper so i'd probably rather have him. that's not a controversial opinion, imo.
-
lol at lions fans thinking jared goff is good. his ceiling is "competent" qb. which is fine, but its not going to win you a super bowl (cue "well ackshually....."). i think goff will function fine in an offense that lives off a solid running game and play action and doesnt ask him to make difficult throws. in other words, what every average nfl qb could accomplish.
-
i think trubisky has more upside than goff. trubisky is a better athlete and can run. and he's much cheaper. like i said, theyre in a similar situation, none of them have what appears to be a "solution" at qb. the chances that trubisky could be a quality qb are higher than goff, imo.
-
i'd say the lions have a better qb situation than new orleans. unless they re-signed jameis. then i'd say its similar but i'd probably rather have goff.
-
i think the lions have a better qb situation than seattle and carolina. i would not say the lions qb situation is better than pittsburgh or atlanta, i think its similar. in fact, i would take mitch on his contract over goff right now. i dont know about mariota. i guess i'd probably take goff. houston and davis mills is too early to say.
-
if pickett or willis fell to 32 would you take him? i probably would.
-
or...perhaps...for the lions to take a qb there... matt corral has a whole bunch of baker mayfield comps and john dorsey (the guy who drafted mayfield) is in the lions front office. so ya never know!
