Agreed that you can’t judge him on one game. They played ok in the first half. Caleb had some bad misses, but had some good throws too. The second half was the Vikings playing more to their talent. The better team won. They would penalize the kicking team for kicking out of bounds repeatedly. Repeatedly committing a penalty on purpose can have consequences. I’m not sure what this one would be, certainly not granting a TD like in the Eagles Commanders game last year, but it wouldn’t be detrimental to the team not taking committing the penalty. If you can’t kick it out of the end zone then I suppose the onside kick is equal. You will be giving up a significant amount of field position when you get the ball back. Also, you would need to fair catch the pooch punt or risk it dying in play losing more time, so you can’t hope for a touchback from rolling into the end zone. Not being able to kick out of the end zone is the issue here. Maybe their punter has a bigger leg but they’ve never worried about it before? Anyway, it’s not a fireable offense for not having someone who can kick the ball through the end zone, but it does take an option off the table in the rare scenario you really need it.

I think the old offense was just a big set of ingredients that was cooked up by the old OC week-to-week. They could try running the same plays from the same formations I suppose, but that will get you crushed in the NFL. The key is have the right plays at the right time more often than not and to hide what you are doing. Thats not something you can just borrow. You have to know it. Maybe Morton doesn’t? Maybe it was just one game and adjustments will be made. Maybe, as said earlier, the coordinators will get fired mid-season. Either way this game was a disaster.

It’s amazing the difference Shiela Ford Hamp has made. She seems to be fully aware of her strengths and limitations and humble enough to leave the football decisions to football people. Love to see it and glad she’s the owner. It is almost universally a bad idea to hire the coach before GM and yet, the Lions did just that and knocked it out of the park. I was terrified when Campbell wore the helmet to the press conference that fiery year. I thought he was a clown. I was completely wrong. He knows what he’s doing, when to push a player and when to crack a joke. The guy really is a master of managing people. The there’s the game that made many question his in-game management, when they failed to get a field goal off at the end of a half. What that game actually proved is that he’s humble enough to take the blame and cares so much that he was legitimately disappointed in himself for hurting his players. He’s never made that mistake again. It’s really fun to have a well run organization to cheer for. It’s even better that the people in charge seem fun too. The coaching staff and front office mostly seem like they’d be fun to hang out with on a summer Sunday just talking about whatever.

I don’t care much about the Ben Johnson. He’s the coach of another team now, his success or failure has little to do with this team. How this team performs at the skill positions may be impacted by changing coordinators. That matters to me. And it doesn’t say Johnson is some sort of savant. It could just say that his ideas worked with this combination of players.

I think it’s legitimate to question if the offense will remain elite. We just won’t know if Ben Johnson was the mastermind until games are played. Not surprised to be the underdog on the road against a team expected to be good. If the offense is still explosive and unpredictable and the defense is at least what it was end of last year this is likely a win.

I hope this isn’t the hype that turns into a 6-8 sack season.

This could totally be Khalil Mack. Initially makes an impact but in the end didn’t really bring more than he cost.

Not disagreeing with you about chemistry and leadership, it’s just that when I read that my mind immediately went to Jerry Jones spreading rumors to not lose too much of the fan base, he has to keep butts in seats until he can use those draft picks. I guarantee he sees this as very own Hershel Walker moment. Jimmy Johnson takes too much credit in his mind for the original.
