Agreed that you can’t judge him on one game. They played ok in the first half. Caleb had some bad misses, but had some good throws too. The second half was the Vikings playing more to their talent. The better team won.
They would penalize the kicking team for kicking out of bounds repeatedly. Repeatedly committing a penalty on purpose can have consequences. I’m not sure what this one would be, certainly not granting a TD like in the Eagles Commanders game last year, but it wouldn’t be detrimental to the team not taking committing the penalty.
If you can’t kick it out of the end zone then I suppose the onside kick is equal. You will be giving up a significant amount of field position when you get the ball back. Also, you would need to fair catch the pooch punt or risk it dying in play losing more time, so you can’t hope for a touchback from rolling into the end zone.
Not being able to kick out of the end zone is the issue here. Maybe their punter has a bigger leg but they’ve never worried about it before? Anyway, it’s not a fireable offense for not having someone who can kick the ball through the end zone, but it does take an option off the table in the rare scenario you really need it.
