This is one of those games where it's good/great team vs below average/bad team. Not much you can do.

Montero gave them 4 innings and didn't completely implode. The offense has had 4 baserunners in 7 innings.

Like we said, Avila's entire process broke down once the draft pick was done. Smith's process broke down when we executed the draft pick.

One thing on Avila...baseball conventional wisdow has improved. Nobody is taking a reliever 1-1 anymore. Basic valuations on draft slot and positions are settled law. He didn't know how to build a team beyond losing and tanking seasons. But it's hard to screw up as royally as Randy Smith did.

In 2012, they had the seventh ranked payroll, in 2013 and 2014 it was fifth. They were able to spend to correct roster holes and fix mistakes. That's not happening anytime soon...so they will have to build a team with much better player development and contract discipline.

I'm fine with using major league time to develop Mize. Wasting time with guys like McKinstry, Baddoo, Kreidler is frustrating. These guys are not part of the near future...but we have no options. I always thought we would be done with Vic Reyes and Harold Castro...but we are back to it.

They are in a similar market to the Tigers and are 23rd in payroll, right behind the Tigers: https://www.spotrac.com/mlb/payroll/_/year/2024/sort/cap_total2 They also have the courage to make a Burnes trade to another contender without worrying how it will be viewed by their fanbase. They turned him into Joey Ortiz who is now one of their best hitters.

They've got two more years of control on a cheap contract. Unless he gets hurt again, you bring him back and see if he can ever put it together.
