I'd be shocked if they go with Hurter at all today (assuming Reese is the bulk guy). They can't take any chance of having a game tomorrow and not having him available. I would think Vest is available as he only had 24 pitches. Brieske is definitely available also. So if it's a close lead, I think we likely see both of them today at some point. Hopefully in the 8th/9th with Guenther/Hanifee and or Jobe between Reese and then. If it's a blowout, then obviously rest Brieske and Vest.

I don’t think there’s any way Jobe is on the 40 man until the end of Spring training when he starts next year in Detroit. With all the great pitching, we’ve gone to plenty of room on the 40 man this offseason to some tough decisions. Especially when the 60 day DL guys need added. I could see a few trades for minor leaguers of guys like Faedo so they can keep guys that are proving worth now and would almost be guaranteed to be claimed.

Oh, I definitely do as well. I'm just saying as a fan. The Orioles had an opportunity to go big and have a great chance to separate themselves, but were unwilling to part with what it would take. And while they still have as good a chance as about anyone in the AL, they have floundered since the deadline and their pitching has been a major reason. I'm extremely thankful we still have Skubal for at least 2 more seasons. I would have had a hard time saying no to Holliday, Bassillo, plus 1-2 more prospects though, but it would have taken that to have any inclination of moving him.

While I do agree KC is the most important series, I would love to see him face Baltimore twice so they can see what potentially could have been if they were really willing to go for a title.

Ohtani’s AAV for luxury tax purposes is $46 mil instead of the $70 mil it would be with no deferral, and that’s with him deferring $680 of the $700 million, and having those deferred payments in years 11-20. Without knowing the exact calculation, if Soto signs for $50 mil/yr for 12 years, and defers half of it, for another 10 years, he’s still going to have around $40 mil AAV. I doubt anyone is willing to only get $2 mil/yr through the playing portion of the contract like Ohtani. His outside earnings are so much greater.

I think this is the reason. While it is extremely unlikely, we are now only 5.5 games out. And only 1.5 games behind the only team between us and the 3rd wild card team. And we play that team 3 times this weekend. Obviously, it would take a miracle, but we have gained 5 games in a short time and our schedule is to our advantage. We play a number of bad teams, and/or teams we would be competing with. If we get swept this weekend, any hope is completely gone. If we take care of business with the Angels and win 2 out of 3, or sweep against Boston, then all of a sudden we are 4th in a 3 team race for the wild card and likely only 2-4 games out. (And we still have a series with Colorado and one against Chicago to close the season)

Yeah, as much as I hated the opener/definitely still hate complete bullpen days and long for the days of starters pitching 220-250 innings, requiring starters to pitch 5-6 innings would be an extremely foolish rule - which means MLB has at least a 30-40 pct chance of doing it.

The Athletic just had an article on it and they've been saying this ad nauseum on the broadcasts. It's partly what you say, and partly so the long guy doesn't have to face the best part of the order 3 times, so they are more likely to be able to get that extra inning. It messes up matchups for the opposing team - the Athletic article was talking to the M's manager (before he was fired). Overall, as much as I hated it to start, it seems like a really good strategy and it's getting results.
