  1. There's a scene in Almost Famous where after spending some time on the road with Stillwater, William Miller, the 15 year old journalist, greets the crew and everybody via nicknames and all of that. Just like he's one of the boys.

I wonder if McCosky does that in the locker room.  "What up Greenie!   Mizer, how's the elbow?   JR!  I'm so jealous of your porn stache.  I've been trying grow mine for 40 years"

Surprised non kosher wasn’t one of their demands.

No sunscreen?  Of course they all look like vampires anyway so I guess they don't need it.

  3. This disussion reminds me of the circular logic Jim Bouton complained about in Ball Four.  The coaches always had an answer anytime a situation didn't go their way.   Any time a hitter succeeded the pitcher was told "You can't throw that pitch in this situation."

The old adage... "throw strikes but don't give them anything to hit"

"Work the count..... but don't give away pitches".  Ok.  So when a guy like Tork swings at a 1st pitch FB and flys out it's "You can't just go after on the first pitch and let him off the work.  Make him work".  If he hits a HR it becomes "Look at that!  He jumped all over a meatball"

Possible it's been mentioned already in the thread, but Dirks made the point that players can go an entire game without seeing a good pitch to hit... and while organizational strategy may be playing a factor (the Tigers are swinging at far fewer first pitches than in years past in 2024), with Torkelson, he absolutely needs to swing at a few of them, if for nothing else, to keep pitchers honest. Or else he may not get much of anything worth hitting

It's a big reason he ends up down in counts so often.... pitchers don't have any fear and just know he'll take the "get me over" fastball early in the count. And by the time he shows interest in taking the bat off of his shoulders, he's at a point where he's unlikely to get much to hit.

That's at least my amateur observation.... I still think he's a talented hitter, hitting 30 homers last year established that in my mind. But something needs to change with approach if he wants to stay there for sure.

agree.  Even last year when "struggling" he was still smoking the ball for outs.  I don't see that to the same degree this year.

  5. It's a bitch to drive thru though.  Made the trek to TN 3 weeks ago.

I used to hate driving through Ohio as a kid but as a driver I kind of like it.  Once you get thru Toledo then you can relax and put the cruise control on and it's just you and some truckers.  Then as  you approach Dayton then fun begins and I hate that more than the rest of the state.  There's always construction and getting across the river is a pain.

These campus Gaza protests are a weird amalgam of Portlandia and Reds. Columbia’s “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” featured expensive REI tents, body oils for sale, gluten-free bread, a counseling tent, an art corner, and a “People’s Library for Liberated Learning.” Completing the Portlandia vibe, during the siege of Hamilton, a student speaking on behalf of the protesters demanded that those occupying the building be provided with food and water. “I guess it’s a question of what kind of community and what kind of obligation Columbia has to its students. . . . Do you want students to die of dehydration and starvation?”

Imagine an encampment at a conservative Christian college in which students occupy the quad or library to protest their state’s gender-affirming model for trans kids. Suppose the protesters linked arms and forbade entry to students who looked gay. See the problem? Who knows what any person, gay or straight, thinks about gender treatment for minors, but the idea of blocking or singling out anyone for their presumed opinions is outrageous.

University administrators and faculty shouldn’t hesitate for a nanosecond to enforce their rules against these students, up to and including expulsion. Yet hesitate they do.

  7. I read a rumor that Comcast is pushing to move the channel to a new tier, that's the crux of the dispute.

I recently upgraded my package and got access to MLB/NHL/NFL network along with some others like IFC, Sundance, Paramount... so I wonder if that's where they want to put Bally's.

  8. If the Dems are just being pragmatic and making the best of a bad situation.... good for them.  I'm glad Ukraine got what they needed.

Of course we know damn well any Republic minority leader would not do the same to a Democratic Speaker who was in a similar position.

  9. For some reason when I see those kids I'm reminded of an anecdote I heard about the people in Texas who want to secede from the US and some old timer asks "If we secede will I still get my social security checks".

What is going on to make this the flashpoint issue to garner this level of protest on American college campuses?

I understand there are humanitarian concerns but why is this cause the one that has incited the far left?  They are protesting at levels that we didn’t come close to seeing on campus for more pressing issues for liberal Americans.  Where was this support for Ukraine against Putin? Where was this support to defend Roe? Where is this type of protest against guns and school shootings?   I’m boggled at the reason that’s causing American students to pick a known terror organization in Hamas to be the issue they have chosen to hang their hat at this level.  It just doesn’t make much sense.

The weather turned warmer, it's the end of the semester, and these are naive, shallow, and spoiled kids who wanted something to do.  It's the protest version of "glamping".

  11. As one reply to that tweet said "I'm done revolutionizing now, I'd like to go home please".  The rest are also hilarious.  "Did my doordash make it here?"

It's not as though the market is crawling with All-Star-level hitters just waiting for us to give them a job.

Harris just needs to go to the GM store and trade in his 4 players worth 12 points total for a couple worth 6-8 points each.

this season was all about finding out if these guys could play. It was a transition year. Fans bought into the hype of prospect lists and assumed a 1:1 draft pick would be an all star. That’s not how baseball works.

Ha. The part at the end where she’s like “no we don’t want them to feed us but we don’t want them to violently stop food from coming in”.

Asked if that’s happening she says “we are looking for a commitment that they won’t stop it”.

    “but they haven’t stopped it?”

”well I don’t know to what extent it’s been attempted”

Don’t tell me Ivy Leaguers are smart. This one is dumb.
