Even supposing this is entirely right (I suspect that it's more case-by-case than you make it), how does this make engaging in human trafficking for the purposes of political grandstanding excusable?

The politics are what they are, the Governor is doing this because it works. But the lectures about how this is all has a patina of good faith is rich... deep down, we all know he doesn't care about any of these people and sees them as pawns to his Presidential ambitions.

As the only person on the board who lives in a border state run by the GOP, maybe if our Governor were concerned with providing care to migrants (he isn't), he'd honest and communicate that to other jurisdictions. But he's not an honest man, and that isn't what this is about. It's not about the human beings,he doesn't care about the, they are just pawns. Its about throwing out red meat for the base. Very "Christian" of him.

In the context, it's because these jurisdictions are limiting their cooperation with ICE. That's it.. setting aside that there are legitimate, pragmatic reasons for doing so, chief among them not chilling those here illegally from cooperating with law enforcement on criminal behavior, in essence helping local police departments. Greg Abbott having a policy disagreement with other jurisdictions on degrees of cooperation with ICE is not a defense of him engaging in human trafficking. Full stop.

This isn't about thinking that the border is an issue, this is about policy differences. And those migrants that my Governor and the Florida Governor are trafficking are just pawns in all of this. It's pretty shameful, there is no defense Of course, Abbott hasn't been communicating one iota with any of the jurisdictions he's sending these busses to, which I'm guessing isn't the case up in Chicago, which to my understanding is about trying to find the necessary resources to care for human beings. Pretty shameful behavior by Abbott... it's basically Twitter ****posting masquerading as policy

One thing that I saw mentioned was that Barnes had the airwaves all to himself around the last poll, which isn't the case now; Johnson has caught up on advertising. It's not all good news for Johnson though; his unfavorables are just about as bad as the last poll. Barnes needs to do more to define himself and get his name recognition up, similar to Ryan and Fetterman.

The party is really fractured on this issue... you have politicians like the ones in my state, but also in states like Arizona and Wisconsin arguing in favor of bans from the 19th Century. As we speak. The conditions aren't there for consistent messaging. Proposing a 15 week ban in the US Senate (which polls underwater as it is) while GOP politicians at the state level continue to push the extremes, including in competitive states this cycle, color me skeptical that is 4d Chess

And it's not going to work when the party is fractured on messaging as well. The wants and desires of some GOP members of the US Senate are a lot different than those of Republican politicians in the House or at the state/local level. All of whom seem to have little problem exposing themselves on this issue.

Once again, Republican politicians seem to have little problem reminding voters where they really stand on abortion (Exhibit A below)

Maybe it's because of where I live (and the fact that the pols here have enacted some of the most draconian abortion regs in America) but, at least here anyway, the party is pretty closely associated with the most extreme positions on the issue. And many elected Rs, especially when you go below the level of the US Senate, aren't shy to remind you of their positions. Just because it looks like 4D Chess doesn't mean it's gonna work.

OTOH, if they were to actually call it to the floor and a bunch of Senators opposed, wouldn't that be kinda demoralizing to the GOP base? I doubt it gets a vote in this Congress. But it's not exactly an easy choice for some of these Congressman and Senators.

And it really doesn't change what these local Rs say in a lot of these states. And voters see that If you're in the Philly suburbs and see Doug "Slim Pickens at the end of Dr. Strangelove" Mastriano's position on abortion and Dobbs, I'm not sure how Lindsey Graham's maneuver here really changes the calculus when considering who to vote for. If anything, it could backfire

And that isn't gonna work, imo, when you have large states run by Republicans who currently have draconian bans in place... and many other states with Republicans looking to enact draconian policies. Which Graham's law, btw, will not address... effectively enacting a national ban at 15 weeks while simultaneously allowing some states to effectively ban the practice in even extreme situations

That's definitely the plan. I just doubt it works...

Also when considering what the Tigers can and can't do next year, better to worry about the things they can control (ie. their roster) than the things they cannot (ie. what other teams in the division might or might not do)
