  1. I'm very sympathetic to the idea that you don't need to go to college to get ahead or get a good job - plenty of examples of it in my family. Having said that, there's a fine line between "not everyone wants to college" or "college is not for everyone" and "college is bad, kids shouldn't go there". I don't know about Kirk in particular, but a lot of conservative commentators tend to cross that line, and I don't think that's a good thing at all. Take it from someone who works in the engineering world, there's not enough domestic students in some industries who obtain a college degree. It shouldn't be an either / or proposition here.
  2. I honestly don't think we know what she would be like at this point.... we have gotten glimpses of her as VP, but largely people's views about her often revolve around the 2020 primaries, and candidates can grow and change during that timeframe.
  3. I said it previously, but Kamala herself will be more equipped to defend herself against attacks than Biden is at this juncture. At some level, it's hard to expect the rest of the party to defend the standard bearer when the standard bearer cannot defend himself adequately. That's a big reason why we find ourselves here, even if (IMO) it's not totally fair to Biden either.
  4. This country wouldn't exist if we didn't "fight for abstractions"....
  5. Wow, crazy 20 year old with a gun. Equal opportunity. Not exactly a surprise.
  6. Is the constant panning to the candidate in the crowd a feature of these things? 2020 doesn't count because it was a weird year, but back when I actually watched conventions, I don't recall the candidate sitting out there like this every single night.
  7. The ear bandages in the crowd is some of the weirdest ****
  8. The golden rule of politics: everything that happens helps Trump
  9. If this is really gonna happen, it'd be hilarious if he announced it about an hour before Trump's speech tomorrow night
  10. The funders seem to be moving away from Biden as well
  11. The stakes....
  12. I would just add that what happened on Saturday was deadly serious and deserves an actual investigation to figure out what's going on. The results of which will be remembered for a long time and (hopefully) will lead to actual changes. Even beyond "blue check" Twitter reply guys (ie. Paul Szypula), actual Members of Congress throwing around their culture war acronym of the month around makes it less likely to take their findings or thoughts seriously because it demonstrates that they are less interested in a finding the facts and more interested in keeping everyone divided along political lines (which, isn't that what we want to get away from?)
  13. I am guessing Clint Eastwood in "In the Line of Fire" was DEI too? The general observation that a Secret Service agent froze is fine... Tying it into the broader culture war is wrong and accomplishes nothing.
  14. No kidding. It's not a huge shock that Ross Douthat loves JD Vance... Because they both share very weird politics
  15. Also didn't realize the degree to which Trump is an anti-vaxxer
  16. More focus on the stakes of the election would be nice, rather than just the odds
  17. Naturally, he wasn't wearing that oversized nicotine patch in his public appearances prior to tonight
  18. I won't either.
  19. I feel really sad for her... May his memory be a blessing
  20. Whatever one's feelings about Rachel Maddow, Alex Jones isn't a reputable source on anything
