The weird thing about Javy is that his Statcast card is as blue as the sea. His hard hit rate has collapsed, but that’s probably he’s focusing on contact which is his highest rate ever. One of the reason for his surge has got to be his BABIP, which was .382 coming into today and, admit it, those two singles were seeing-eye at best. Which is fine, I’ll take the runs. If I had to guess and assess, I’d say his improvement is due to luck as a result of his hard work changing his approach. He may not be able to keep exactly this up, but there’s no reason he shouldn’t be able finish above the 50th percentile of hitters.

Kid’s off to a rough start.

I’ve been going to Wrigley Field on the regular for going on 30 years, so, of course I can see all the warts. April and May are, on balance, awful at Wrigley. The lake is to the north and east and the stadium opens to the north and east, and the wind almost always comes whipping off that lake at breakneck speed this time of year. So with water temps still in the low 40s, the temperature drops by some ten degrees versus that outside the stadium. Today, for example, it was 54 degrees on the thermometer, the official feels like temp was 42, and it felt like it was in the low 30s up there. My hands, toes, and knees were very numb by the middle of of game. Add the fact that the upper deck seats are never in the afternoon sun, and it gets very, very wintery up there all the way up to Memorial Day, and occasionally beyond. On the other hand, in July and August, when temps get into the 90s, it gets incredibly hot and muggy up there, and that’s exacerbated by the fact that the winds in the summer come in from the south and west, which is blocked by the stadium behind us (remember, we face north and west). So we get zero breeze up there to help cool us off. Many are the times I sweat like crazy in my seats, and between innings I have to go down the tunnel to the concourse to get some breeze any breeze to cool off. And I love that place. I love it with all my baseball soul. I’m lucky to live here and only a 20-minute drive from it.

This has bothered me for decades and I have never quite known just how to articulate why, but, I saw another example just today, so, here goes. This is from the story about Mickey York leaving the fanduel networks: Mickey York, an on-air personality for the network for 25 years, most recently as a reporter and anchor covering the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Tigers, officially announced his exit from the regional-sports network Tuesday ... York's exit, which is position effectively eliminated, follows the retirement of John Keating, who spent nearly 29 years with Detroit's RSN ― first PASS, then Fox Sports Detroit, then Bally Sports Detroit, then FDSND ― before hanging it up at the end of the Red Wings' season. Between York and Keating, they spent more than a half-century on Detroit sports broadcasts. Tigers legend Kirk Gibson also exited the Tigers broadcasts this season, after 15 years, over two stints. Ummm ... no. Between York and Keating, they have spent less than three decades on Detroit sports broadcasts. Keating was on for 29 years, and York was on for 25, and York's tenure 100% overlapped with Keating's. That means were on the network 25 years together, not a half-century. Keating started in 1996. Unless I ripvanwinkled my way to the year 2046, they have not spent more than half a century on Detroit sports broadcasts together. I know, I know, they mean additively. I get it. Keating was on Detroit TV for 29 years; York was on 25; that adds up to 54 years, which is more than half a century. I get what they're trying to put across. They mean they have more than half a century experience when you add it up. But what kind of sense does that make? Experience isn't additive like that. It's not as though Keating was there 29 years, and then when York started, he immediately started building on Keating's 29 years and added 25 years of his own, and taken together, they now have the same experience and knowledge as one person who'd there 54 years by themself. It don't work like that. Imagine if General Motors added up the years of experience in the automotive industry each of the 250 or so members of their senior executive team has and tried to promote that as, "Our senior executive team has over 5,000 years combined experience in the automotive industry." I mean, come on. Five thousand years experience in automobiles? Do you buy that? YMMV on this, but that makes my eyes just roll.

It is definitely some combination of behavioral, geographic, and cookie-based targeting. I get Spanish-language Home Depot ads when I listen to FT pods.

Trump is not immune from speech content analysis. He’s not completely random and unknowable. If he were, he could not be effectively played and manipulated by foreign governments, since they would never be sure how to deal with him. But they know how, and in a very exact way.

Exactly. The winning was fine as far as it went, although that was never all the way to a ring. None of those teams were even the best in the league in any given year, despite breathless preseason predictions by Harold Reynolds and ****face Ripken on that knucklehead network that we would win the whole thing because, I mean, come on! After all, the 2012 World Series team had the seventh best record (and seventh-best pythag!) in the league. That’s a pretty telling results-based snapshot of that whole period, right there.
