Interesting. Most autocratic tyrants make a show of pretending to promise to uphold the rule of law while campaigning for office under the democracy they seek to destroy.

Nobody gunning for Joe Biden and the Democrats gives a flying fuck about the chain of custody on Hunter Biden’s laptop.

What it really comes down to is what Jeimer is likely to deliver in 2023. Some people here appear to believe he’s done done even though he’s still short of his 29th birthday. Others believe as I do he is likely to recover to at least a two-win level this year. I’m not sure how many here believe he’s capable of being a two-win player but simply don’t want him on the team under any circumstances, or more perplexingly to me, for a relatively small salary such as $7 million, which is an absolute bargain for two WAR. If you believe Jeimer is done done, that’s fine, it’s an opinion anyone is welcome to. If you think he can’t be even replacement level anymore because of his early career numbers, and/or because of his variability in results, that’s a fair in-bounds opinion for any fan to have. I respectfully agree to disagree with both of those. I don’t think anything Jeimer did from 2016 through 2019 has any bearing on how he’ll do in 2023, which is why I focused on the recency of 2020-22 instead. Barring career collapse, players are more likely to perform more closely to their recent numbers than to the numbers they started their careers with X years ago.

In the extraordinary situation that I have a loved one in the car and their life were hanging in the balance and I came upon someone blocking the road in protest, I would leap out of the car, run up to them, and yell at them hey, please, you gotta move and hurry, I got someone in my car I have to get to the hospital right NOW! Vast majority of people would move for that, but if the odd person were to reply nope, I’m protesting and I’m not moving, I would say, hey, last chance, buddy, move NOW or I’m moving you. If they still refused to move after maybe two seconds, then I would grab them and drag them off the road so I could continue on to the hospital. I figure that would take all of 30 seconds to transpire, and I would forgive myself for disregarding my principles in that extraordinary situation and taking the moment into my hands. Plus, I would have to be prepared to accept dealing with the legal or criminal consequences of my actions. OK, my turn. Here’s one for you: You’re a guy walking down the sidewalk when you happen upon the situation of protesters sitting in the street blocking traffic, and it makes you hopping mad, so you take that moment in your hands by rushing into the street, yelling at the protesters to move their fucking asses or else you’ll kick their fucking asses (which is what the guy in the video was basically saying), and then dragging them along the pavement onto the curb. Would that be your solution to the situation?

I don’t know anyone who’s upset that Jeimer is gone. I thought for a bit there might be a chance we go to arb with him because of his likely bounceback, but I wasn’t at all surprised they sent him packing.

The sample of 2020 gets more weight when combined with the sample of 2021, because of their similar levels. One could reasonably believe there is just as much to question about our 2022 as there is of 2020, given how so many other regulars on the team beyond Jeimer collapsed in the same manner. It’s possible all these individuals collapsed at the same time in some random fashion, and it’s also possible they all collapsed because of failed hitting philosophies (e.g., swing early, swing often) and incompetent coaching (leading players to seek outside help).

There are the words that established the ideal for this country, and then there are the actions that established the way this country actually operates. It is the actions of the gentry, especially the slaveholding planter portion, that really shaped how America was birthed and subsequently evolved. It can be seen in the way the language of the Constitution was compromised to appease the slaveholders and secure their buy-in to establish the union in the first place. The flowery revolutionary language of the Declaration never stood a chance against 18th-Century realpolitik.

Same here. I acknowledge that there was no chance Jeimer was coming back to the Tigers. There simply was too much noise surrounding him. But I also expect Harris to find a player of at least equal projected value to replace him as well. We already had holes in LF, 1B, C and SP. There didn’t seem to be any need to create yet another hole at 3B. But hey, OK, let’s see how they plug it up. If they get someone similar or better, cool, I’m down.

If mediocre is 1.1 WAR, and then Jeimer is on balance better than mediocre, not sub-mediocre, because his recent three-year average is worth better than 1.1 WAR over year, plus he is projected to be better than 1.1 WAR by all available measures so far, and that makes sense to me. All that aside, I would agree that 2022 was sub-mediocre by any definition.

What would have crazy is returning to the United Sates to face espionage charges. He got the absolute best deal anyone in his situation could get.
-
Fangraphs likes the Boyd sign. They peg him as being one STDEV ranging from 3.73 to 4.60 ERA; 90 to 111 ERA-; and 0.6 to 1.9 WAR. The high side of the projection should make the deal well worth it.

Well, they didn’t need very long, did they?

In for a penny, in for a pound.

Good luck getting good young people to want to take that up as their life’s work.

I think this is close. I believe the truth is even more direct: they simply didn’t want him around anymore.

Cool! Hey, while you're at it, maybe you can swerve toward jaywalkers in the street to keep them out of your way, too? Also, maybe tackle people at the store and detain them if you think they're shoplifting? How about citizen-arresting people smoking only 12 feet from a building entrance instead of the mandated 15? The potential for effective vigilantism seems endless ... 😉

Face-saving gesture? Help Jeimer in the marketplace as a favor? Or maybe because if they appear to be dismissing him with prejudice in a public way, that creates a story that media people might be tempted—or worse, obligated—to follow up on. Who knows? But the Tigers do look like good guys for making him even a half-assed offer, and Jeimer looks like a guy worth making an offer to, so the media can accept it all and move on from the story. It is not dissimilar to the offer we made to Correa last year—what was the point of making Correa an offer that everyone knew he wouldn't accept? Maybe the reasons were different with Correa then than with Jeimer today, but point is, that kind of thing is done.

Right, although I also believe that Detroit beat writers are especially willing to cover up clubhouse drama for the sake of appearances, on behalf of the organization in general.

I continue to maintain that if we're talking only about Jeimer's projected performance, absent any other market consideration, that is well worth the $7 million. That said, I will shelve this hobby horse if Harris obtains a third baseman who is projected to do better than Jeimer, and I don't care at what price. I'm interested only in the production.

Exactly ... FTFY, too ... 😁

This wasn't a critique of your source, but rather a joke about how many folks wouldn't accept any mainstream journalistic outlet as a source.

There's something to this.
