From what I've seen in preseason...Finnie, MBN, and ASP all deserve to stick.  Haven't seen as much of Danielson..but the coaches sure seem to like him as well

asp should still because he's better than anyone in their bottom pair.  if he did stick, they could work him they way montreal sheltered hutson last year.  only offensive zone faceoffs, keep him in advantageous positions and nothing hard on defense.

the wings have a good problem in that their rookies seem ready to go.

their only real question is who plays lw on line one.  finnie, copp, kasper, elmer, and jvr appear to be the candidates.

on defense....bigger questions as the third pair presents some issues, and who plays with seider.  if not chairot then who?  do you go with simon-seider at home and then matchup chairot-aljo with lesser offensive players?  seider-chairot on the road?

they have a lot of enticing options at forward, but not too many in defense after seider and simon.

mazur, wallinder, and postava sent down.  buium and danielson injured.

roster is at 25.  2 more need to be sent down, not including danielson or buium, neither of whom i see making the opening night roster.

I wouldn't mind ASP starting in Grand Rapids just for some time to get used to physicality but offensively I think he's a NHL player right now.

Encouraging..... I'd be fine waiving Berggren potentially Soderblom.  Holl got waived last year so I can see it happening again, also Todd hasn't sounded too thrilled with Gustafsson from what I've heard.

berggren has actually looked pretty decent in the preseason, but he's getting passed by the kids.  mbn and finnie have been better.

i bet they could get SOMETHING for berggren on the trade market.  maybe a mid or late round pick or a defense prospect someone else doesnt care for (maybe even an andrew gibson, lol).

the less time gustafsson is on the team the better.  he's only making $2m.  holl should be waived.

elmer has limitations but he's been ok in preseason.  good depth piece.

in hindsight, not a ton of reasons to sign jvr.  i guess they didnt expect mbn to be ready, and surely didnt expect finnie to come on so strong.  but its only pre-season so we might be getting too excited.

the big problem is still defense.  i didnt see anything special from bernard-docker.  wallinder was invisible most of the time.  tuomisto looks like a career ahl'er.

cossa being bad wasnt a good thing considering talbot and gibson's injury histories.  hopefully he matures in GR and can be ready when they need him.

Wasnt splitting Seider/Edvinsson part of the team's upswing when McLellan came in? Of course even if it was the team went back to being crappy later anyway. That seems like the kind of thing that could be more of a mix and match. If you are playing a team with a powerful 1st line, pair them up. But against most teams I think you want one of them out there 50 out of 60 min.

the upswing corresponded with kasper on line 1.  the collapse happened after copp got hurt and kasper went down to line 2.

yeah - I'll grant the 1st line went into the tank late, but I'm going to put that as much on Larkin as who he was playing with. He's played with a lot of schmuks on one side an still been productive and/or pulled them into some level of productivity with him. He wasn't the same player from some point after the worlds - whether it was mental, a lingering physical thing they didn't advertise, or he's just getting old.

I don't think Cossa is going to make it.  Seems like if he was the goalie they though he was when they drafted him, that he would have made a big leap by now.  We'll see him this season, for sure, but he might be getting passed by Rudy G or Augustine before too long.

maybe.  a little too early to tell yet.  but he's not barging down the door, that's for sure.

I mean Askarov was taken higher than Cossa the draft before Cossa and he has played 16 total NHL games in his career and is still slated to share the crease with Nedeljkovic this season.  Askarov is probably one of the best goalie prospects in a long time, so we gotta have some patience.

yeah, and maybe some of it is Yzerman not sure of the team's defense and not wanting to expose Cossa too early.

True, though Grand Rapids' defense was not great last season!  I think if Cossa sustained his all star level play last season and didn't flounder in the second half, Yzerman might have pivoted away from the Gibson trade and let Cossa compete with Mrazek(or insert mid vet here)/Talbot for a spot out of camp.  I hope this season he can sustain his high level of play all season in the AHL and force his way into the NHL.

McLellan basically said Danielson was going to make the team before he got hurt.  Here's what he had to say after last night:

“I’m really happy with all three of the kids,” Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. “We may as well bundle them all up and put them in a package (answer): They’ve all competed from day one until now, they’ve all improved, their confidence level has gone up. The group has been very accepting of them. They believe that the three of them can help the group, which is always a good sign. They’ve opened up some eyes.”

Though McLellan wasn’t revealing any lineup decisions, he was asked what more Brandsegg-Nygård could have done to earn a spot and acknowledged, “not much more.”

It really sounds like and feels like all 3 could make the club or at least a couple of them.  Lets not doom too hard yet!

The Red Wings still have two cuts to make to get down to 23, and McLellan cautioned, “what happens on Monday doesn’t necessarily mean that’s going to be what happens on Thursday.” That could involve some possible waiver decisions or players who are sent down but eventually get called back up. That’s something to keep in mind for this week.

But if Detroit does open the season with two, or even all three, rookies, it would certainly be a welcome jolt of enthusiasm — both in the fan base, and maybe even in the dressing room.

“They’re energizing the group right now, really,” McLellan said. “We started Axe in overtime, we put Finnie out in the second pair, and the guys are rooting for them. There’s a little life there that they get excited for them.”

i get thinking long term with the rookies, but they've all done enough to make the team.

as usual, thry signed a bunch of depth veterans rather than assuming the rookies would make it.  so now theyre kind of stuck.

but they shouldnt be stuck on defense.  asp deserves to be on the team.  pick one (or two) of holl, hamonic, or gustafsson and waive them.
