Jason_R Posted October 13 Posted October 13 It’s almost like Yzerman and the staff have done a good job of rebuilding the talent pipeline and there are now several talented prospects who promise to be able to win jobs from replacement level veterans who command NHL market salaries. Looking at the roster/contracts going into this season, I thought maybe they’d call up one or two players to start the season at most. I assumed the youth movement would begin next year. But clearly the youth movement has started this season, and will undoubtedly see at least Danielson and Mazur and probably Wallinder up this year also. 1 Quote
1984Echoes Posted October 13 Posted October 13 (edited) I wanna see Shai Buium. He's been my favorite since we drafted him. Gotta wait for the recovery from injury so I guess I'll need to have some patience here. Nothing new though, in that regard. I just wanna see Chiarot pushed down to 3rd pairing. The sooner the better. Edited October 13 by 1984Echoes Quote

1984Echoes Posted October 13 Posted October 13 I guess you mean that with regards to Chiarot? This is what I see with Chiarot as a 1st pair D with Mo Seider: His 1st year here those two were paired up. 2022-23. Chiarot ended up with a -31 +/-. IIRC, Seider had a -20 or -25 plus-minus when he was paired up with Chiarot, until Walman supplanted Chiarot as the 1st pair LHD with Seider. Seider ended up at -9, so -20 or 25 with Chiarot, plus 15-ish or so with Walman. Walman ended up a +10. In 2023-24, Walman and Seider were paired. Walman ended up a -2 so no great earth shakes there... and Seider ended up a -7. Again, nothing great. Chiarot ended up a -4 as 2nd pair that year, instead of the -31 he had the prior year as mostly the 1st pair LHD with Mo. In 2024-25 Walman left and Chiarot was again 1st pair LHD with Mo... Chiarot -14, Mo -5. In two games this year so far, Mo and Chiarot are both -3. I'm sorry... but I don't even mind Ben Chiarot. I love his hits and toughness on the ice. Just not as 1st pair. I think as a 1st pair LHD he is not only too old and too slow and an overall negative on the ice, but more importantly, I think he DRAGS Mo seider DOWN with him. I like ben Chiarot. I just like him as 3rd pair LHD, and NOT 1st pair LHD... is all. I'm sticking to my guns. Heck, I'll take AJ as 1st pair LHD over Ben any day. Starting today... if I could just write up the lineup myself... 1 Quote

1984Echoes Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Yeesh. I just watched a 3-on-1 rush against the Wings after a turnover... WTF guys?!?! Quote
1984Echoes Posted October 13 Posted October 13 They just explained it... Toronto player with a broken stick at the bench getting a replacement. ASP and Edvinsson in the O-zone when the returning player knocks ASP in the back and down to the ice... Turnover, 3 on 1 rush the other way... I'll allow that. Quote

Mo has the capacity to play a 200 foot game, but not if the guy he's next to doesn't have the speed to rotate back fast so Mo can take off on openings. I would make good speed next to Seider a bigger priority. It would open up a lot IMO. I don't think he needs a physically punishing mate as much as the wings seem to like - or at least not always. it's overkill for what it costs on the other aspects. slothfacekilla Posted October 13 Author Posted October 13 Theoretically Ben Chiarot could be a real asset to a team, he has the attributes to be a great physical, crease clearing defenseman which every team needs. But I think a combo of him not having great hockey IQ (always running into the wrong defensive lanes) and him thinking he's a lot more skilled than he is (trying to rush the puck himself instead of passing) makes that impossible to materialize. Which is a real shame because his massive brain farts negate all the good he actually can do. Quote

Jason_R Posted October 13 Posted October 13 All this talk about how Chiarot would be better suited for the third pairing is missing the point. Of course he would be, but when he was hired there was nobody else suited to play on the first pairing. Chiarot has done exactly what he was hired to do, which is to eat up minutes for four years until the franchise had credible prospects to replace him on the blue line. Even now, leaving aside Edvinsson and ASP who promise to be a formidable second pairing, there is nobody who is clearly head and shoulders above Chiarot. Anyway, his contract is up after this season so the search for a successor is on, whether it is a prospect or a new free agent. 1 Quote
1984Echoes Posted October 13 Posted October 13 Understood. I think that's currently ongoing... This year. But if no one can rise up to the task this year to push Chiarot downward in the lineup... well then, I guess it's "wait till next year". But... I'd rather not. Quote

Jason_R Posted October 13 Posted October 13 I get it, but who are you suiting up in his place on Wednesday night? Quote
gehringer_2 Posted October 13 Posted October 13 (edited) Great to escape with a win when they didn't play that great, but I am so tired of Rasmussen. Isn't there any one the Wings can put in *his* place. Was watching the game on delay - late in the 3rd, tied. Domi starts a rush down his right wing and Rasmussen is dead in line about 30 ft away, waiting for him, and what does he do with this opportunity to absolutely stand Domi up, take him to the boards, at least pinch off the rush? Absofreakinglutely nothing. He lets him skate right by without so much as touching him. Domi didn't even have to take a step out of his way. This man does not have the heart of a hockey player. Please someone make him go away. Elmer can't possibly be worse. Edited October 13 by gehringer_2 Quote

I've already mentioned AJ a couple of times but let me state that properly: Because I don't think AJ will do so well 20-24 minutes per night on the 1st pair every single night against NHL size. So... Against the bigger tougher teams/ 1st lines, Chiarot and Seider. Against the smaller, shiftier, faster teams/ 1st lines Johansson and Seider. The "off" night puts Chiarot, or AJ on a 15-ish minutes against weaker lines. Hmmm, sort of a "breather" if we can call it that. The "Top-Pair" night gives Chiarot or AJ those 24-ish minute nights: Chiarot against bigger lines AJ against smaller. Thinking about this... having "breather" nights might help Chiarot have fresher legs throughout the season so when he IS on the top pair he may even play a bit better. Obviously it's "in progress" because that could be subject to change based on performance, Wallinder rising up quickly (if that were to happen). or Buium returning (whenever that is), any other factors (a trade for example), and ALSO proving it on the ice. So a transition year for our top D pairing. As for Wednesday... Who are we playing? (Joking...), against the Panthers, I think we could afford to try out AJ on the 1st pair. Except... They haven't practiced together very much if at all (Mo and AJ as a pair, or at least I'm just guessing) so this may not even be realistic. But I've had Chiarot's 1st pair head on my platter since he signed so I would have been trying out all other options to replace him on the 1st pair, including AJ. But... that's just my 2 cents (all of the above that is...). Quote
