This is what I see with Chiarot as a 1st pair D with Mo Seider: His 1st year here those two were paired up. 2022-23. Chiarot ended up with a -31 +/-. IIRC, Seider had a -20 or -25 plus-minus when he was paired up with Chiarot, until Walman supplanted Chiarot as the 1st pair LHD with Seider. Seider ended up at -9, so -20 or 25 with Chiarot, plus 15-ish or so with Walman. Walman ended up a +10. In 2023-24, Walman and Seider were paired. Walman ended up a -2 so no great earth shakes there... and Seider ended up a -7. Again, nothing great. Chiarot ended up a -4 as 2nd pair that year, instead of the -31 he had the prior year as mostly the 1st pair LHD with Mo. In 2024-25 Walman left and Chiarot was again 1st pair LHD with Mo... Chiarot -14, Mo -5. In two games this year so far, Mo and Chiarot are both -3. I'm sorry... but I don't even mind Ben Chiarot. I love his hits and toughness on the ice. Just not as 1st pair. I think as a 1st pair LHD he is not only too old and too slow and an overall negative on the ice, but more importantly, I think he DRAGS Mo seider DOWN with him. I like ben Chiarot. I just like him as 3rd pair LHD, and NOT 1st pair LHD... is all. I'm sticking to my guns. Heck, I'll take AJ as 1st pair LHD over Ben any day. Starting today... if I could just write up the lineup myself... i mean in regards to the whole team. in game one your boy aj was complete ****. a total disaster that cost them multiple goals. game two was chairot and seider screwing up and costing goals. in game three asp was god awful, directly led to the two goals and almost gave up two more with his mistakes. as you note, chairot isnt perfect and shouldnt be on the first line, but NONE OF THEM should be on the first pair! only edvinsson and seider should be on the first pair. but then we'd have the worst second pair in the nhl and the worst third pair in the ahl! chairot brings something aljo and asp and wallinder and buium and tuomisto dont: he's physical and he stands up for his teammates. we seem to agree on that much. but aljo is not first pair material. not right now and likely not ever. that's why i was sad to see them miss out on dobson, but montreal had multiple first rounders to trade and we...did not. Was that AJ or was that Hamonic? I'm pretty certain Hamonic was the culprit and AJ was just stuck on a pairing with him but my memory does not serve well. The bottom line is that Chiarot is gone after this season, or if he comes back it really has to be in a reduced role. So in my mind, this team should be preparing, at the very least, for a changing of the top two pair "guard". So let's say Seider gets a rotation of 1st pair LHD's... Chiarot when facing a bigger, physical team. AJ when facing smaller, shiftier teams. And Edvinsson here and there, DURING each game but never as a straight-up pairing. Unless we develop an actual 2nd pairing... I think we're stuck with NOT pairing these two up except for occasional matchups during the game. Maybe Wallinder or Buium will qualify as a true 2nd-pair LHD and can take over that spot... but we've yet to see any indication of that. That's the best I can think of at the moment. Unless Wallinder or Buium suddenly become more physical on NHL ice... There's just no perfect matchup with Mo, except for Edvinsson. Quote
Jason_R Posted October 14 Posted October 14 Chiarot is in the last year of his contract. I assume he is no better than Plan D for Seider’s partner next year. Plan A would be to bump someone up from current 2nd or 3rd pairing. Plan B would be to elevate a Griffin. Plan C would be to sign a more dynamic FA. Plan D would be to bring back Chiarot. He got hired to do a job. He has done it respectably. Wings fans should tip their caps to him. Quote

Copp is in the rear at 38%. Maybe it seems they lose more than they do because they are still not good at maintaining possession after a defensive zone face-off win. They still lose a lot of pucks because they don't move the win on the draw successfully. Quote
slothfacekilla Posted October 21 Author Posted October 21 Ya outside of Copp/Compher the Wings' centers are over 50% on faceoffs this season so far Quote

slothfacekilla Posted October 22 Author Posted October 22 Interesting that Pagnotta says they're open to trading a defender for a center. I would worry about a Gustaffson / Holl trade brings back and I'm not sure the Wings can stand to lose any other defenders. I forgot Hamonic existed but lump him in there too. Quote
