Grand Rapids Griffins

25-1-1

Out of a possible 54 points, they have 51.

That's absolutely insane

and VERY encouraging

it would be more encouraging if it werent done mostly on the backs of the ahl veterans down there.

I think the elephant in the room is Cossa. I think the Wings need to make room for him in Detroit.

I suppose they want to see if Cossa can hold up over a whole season this time instead of fading in the 2nd half, but OTOH it seems a waste of potential if he could be supplying high quality play in Detroit while we're waiting to find out.

The only thing is that Gibson has been amazing, but I don't know if it will last.

all the more reason not to overwork him now. We've seen the story of an overworked goalie fading with the Wings often enough.

My buddy Todd's son Sheldon Dries won the AHL player of the week.

Cossa had another shutout. He doesn't belong there.

He belongs playing every night rather than  once every 2 weeks.  Unless an injury happens there’s no place for him in Detroit.

Will a hot but old goalie bring back a decent 3rd pairing Dman?

No.

But maybe a 6th or 7th (draft pick... sorry if unclear...) from a desperate team down a goalie.

And I think the team needs to turn over the 1A starting goalie position to Gibson (32 years old)

and make that trade of Talbot (38 years old), even though I love what he's done as a Red Wing...

to make way for Cossa as a 1B (for now).

or you could offer up cossa for a player who might help you get over the hump in a winnable east, like rasmus anderson or justin tuch...

/ducks

(and i dont think calgary or buffalo would do that trade without picks, but just sayin...)

I wouldn't offer Cossa up.

It's just too hard getting a top goalie on the team.

Which, obviously, Cossa is NOT...

Yet.

And that to me is the problem.

Until we have a dominant goalie in the crease, I am NOT trading Cossa.

Or for that matter, Augustine, Postava, or Gylinder.

I'm not saying DON'T trade a goalie...

I'm just saying WAIT to trade a goalie (or 3) until AFTER we establish a young, true #1 goalie. Not until we establish our next #1... would I want to make goalie trades.

It's almost like QB in football ("if you don't have a true #1 QB... you don't have a QB...).

Ideally, I would like Gibson to be pushed over to 1B goalie... which is certainly "not yet".

Since we seem to be stacking up decent forwards in the minors (so not counting Kasper or Danielson who are on the Wings) like MBN, Genborg, Plante, and possibly Lombardi...? Buchelnikov... I'm sure there are more... And we also have a few defensemen who are not all going to make it... but some team may want at least one D prospect included in a trade...

I would rather deal from a strength, plus draft picks, to get a difference-making forward.

Just my 2 cents.

PS: Also, a Wing or two might go into a trade to match up salaries (if needed) so... who do we have on an expiring that could be part of a trade...?

great goalies are what make for hockey dynasties. If you have one, even if it's still a big maybe so far, I don't think you can risk letting that get away for a single season result. I don't see a problem with them carrying three goalies. Talbot should not be playing a lot anyway. When #1 and #2 are 32 and 39 I don't see a problem giving #3 30-50% of the PT.

fortunately, the red wings are blessed with two goalie prospects.  what they lack is a young, second line defenseman.  so go get one that wont cost you your second best player (edvinsson).

also, goalies are notoriously fickle.  dont assume cossa will be ken dryden.  he could be devin levi.

True. Depends on what's offered though. If teams take the same view Yzerman seems to be taking, which is that Cossa isn't trustworthy, they may not be willing to make that trade. And of course OTOH, if too many folks are lining up to make that trade, maybe the team needs to rethink their own projection for him.

Cossa's physical traits are elite. That's why he was a 1st round pick.

Goalies are like catchers, they usually take a while to develop.

And you don't just toss them to the curb searching for a 2nd pairing D'man.

IMO.
