I hope this isn’t the hype that turns into a 6-8 sack season.

I guess 68 sacks is an outside possibility, but I’d probably bet the under.

Can't wait to hear Valenti try moving the goalposts on Monday.  He has been spouting off for months about how the Lions wouldn't keep Jamo.

I wouldn't have been surprised had they not, tbh. The way the deal is structured, though, could make him a steal if he really does go off like everyone in Allen Park is saying he will.

Woah. Admittedly, I didn't see this coming, I thought Jamo could be the one that got away. I'm glad we got him down for Tee Higgins money now before he demanded Ja'Marr Chase money next offseason.

Who is left as priorities? Hutch obviously from the '22 class, need to make a smaller money decision on Josh Paschal and Malcolm Rodriguez too. Then Jahmyr Gibbs, Jack Campbell, Brian Branch, and Sam LaPorta next year. Can they afford all four?

I would let Paschal walk. Rodriguez I would keep. Should be cheap given he's coming off injury. Anzalone is the odd man out. He's probably the first victim of the cap. A good player but not a star. He's also over 30.

I thought they would sign Williams but I thought they would give it another season. This is a good contract. The extension doesn't go into effect until two years from now. By then he may not even be in the top 20 highest paid receivers.

I think they like Paschal, and with his injuries I doubt he commands any sort of mega deal on the open market. I could see them giving him a team friendly one-year prove-it deal, similar to Levi's from last year. Same with Rodrigo, he's more valuable here than on any other team.

I agree that Anzalone would need to take a steep hometown discount to stay, and I wouldn't blame him for a second if he doesn't. Jack Campbell has already replaced him this year as the green dot on defense, and between Campbell and Barnes, there are a lot of young cooks in that kitchen. Anzalone is likely gone.

I wouldn't be that surprised if LaPorta isn't extended either. Holmes has shown a willingness to trade and replace a top ten TE before, rather than paying the position north of $15MM APY.

Extending RBs is always a tricky business too. Gibbs is not a traditional between the tackles back, and is only 23, which makes him a more safe bet long-term, but you have to tread very carefully at that position. Guys can fall off a cliff overnight.

The Lions were in a different place with Hockenson. They were 1-6 after going 3-13-1. They were still in the rebuild phase. I also get the vibe from Hockenson that he didn't want to be here. I think they will extend Gibbs. They already extended Montgomery.

I wouldn't be surprised if Branch is the odd man odd. Two of the highest paid safeties in the league on the same roster may be tough to navigate.

I agree, the draft capital mattered more than the player at that point. And it's hard to argue with the results, when they used that capital to trade up for Terrion Arnold and were able to acquire a similar player at lower cost in Sam LaPorta. I also agree they will extend Gibbs; I just think that may be the most dangerous or unpredictable extension of them all. Linebackers, Safeties, and Tight Ends don't deteriorate the way Running Backs sometimes do.

Ideally, they can keep all four. They're smarter than me, I hope they can find a way to make it happen.

The Lions are managing the cap well. As long as they don't do something like blow it all up by handing out a huge contract to someone like Parsons or Hendrickson, they will be fine. The good thing is all these players came in multiple drafts so they can stagger the extensions.

In Holmes first three drafts, he's drafted at least three players in each draft worthy of second contracts, and not just second contracts but top of the market contracts. The Lions get their stars through the draft. They don't have to trade for stars.

Future injuries might make decisions on Campbell/LaPorta/Gibbs/Branch easier. Of the four -- and barring injuries -- I think Campbell is a lock to be resigned followed by Gibbs. I agree that extending RBs is a dicey proposition, but Gibbs is special and still very young. If he's healthy and you can lock him up through age 29/30, I'd make the exception for him. Of LaPorta and Branch, I think LaPorta is the easier of the two to replace, as Branch can play pretty much any DB position and be adequate at worst, and elite at best.

I agree. I thought for sure Jaymo would be a victim of the salary cap. The one player the Lions could sacrifice. Extend Branch and Hutch. And LaPorta should be an easy extension.

Of course Williams was essentially part of the Stafford trade. In addition to Goff, the Lions ended up with the following:

RB Jahmyr Gibbs (via trade with Cardinals)

TE Sam LaPorta (via trade with Cardinals)

DT Brodric Martin (via trade with Cardinals)

WR Jameson Williams (via trade with Vikings)

EDGE Josh Paschal (via trade with Vikings)

CB Ifeatu Melifonwu

The Lions ended up with four cornerstone players from that trade and swindled the Vikings along the way.

Since 2021, the Lions have the 3rd highest percentage of draft picks still on the roster, only 1% behind Chicago. Minnesota has the lowest percentage in the league.

Minnesota had the tenth best injury luck last season. Detroit was 25th (last, of course, on the defensive side of the ball, where they had the sixth-most games lost to injury of the past 25 years). Still Detroit beat Minnesota twice and won 15 games. Trade their injury luck and Minnesota would have won seven games and Detroit would have won the Super Bowl.
