Crazy stuff:

7th round pick, can't even buy a beer in the US

emitt finnie is a center?

kasper prospered next to larkin and raymond too.  i imagine that has a lot to do with it.

the wings were definitely due for a late round pick to succeed.  good for finnie!

the real hero is larkin.  he's playing like an all star again.  just please stay healthy for once.

i think max predicted the wings would start out 5-1, and noted that the schedule was mostly at home and had advantageous travel from the wings' perspective.  still, knocking off toronto, tampa, florida, and edmonton in succession is nothing to shake a stick at.

now they have to travel, but the opponents get (theoretically) weaker.  the one game they played on the road this year they were dominated by the leafs but goalie'd their way to a win.  hopefully they play better coming up.  a healthy kane would help.

penalty kill still looks solid.  goaltending looks good too.  forecheck caused some turnovers.  better sign edvinsson while you can still get him for less than 10m a year.  that ship may have already sailed.

Leading the forwards in ice time is wild no matter who he's playing with

One of the funny things in this one, several times early in the game an Oiler tried to run a Wing hard in the corner of the Wings defensive zone and the Wing sidestepped him. I think I saw at least 3 times - I think once it was McDavid who ended up in a heap. Had to just add to the Oilers' frustration on the day.

The kids are alright!

I thought the third defense pair looked great today, good team win.

This. It's been really nice to be able to see the third pair come out and not have to immediately expect disaster.  😱

Was that McDavid that crumpled to the ice after slamming into the boards hard? A Wing side-stepped the boarding hit and...

Been saying that for a long time! 🙂

But Finnie does have something the Wings have been short of beyond Larkin and Raymond, which is the quickness to create space for himself on the ice so he is both synergy and addition.

I didn't think you were I was just clarifying what I was getting at with my post!  I was shocked he led the forwards in ice time, pretty crazy.

I think that was Kasperi Kapanen, he had to leave the game and didn't come back after trying to charge Bernard Docker 🤣

I’m still getting used to the broadcast crews calling the Wings’ young players by their full names instead of the initials we’ve grown accustomed to referring to them as, lol

I saw a clip on X where Kris Draper was being interviewed about Finnie. It seems when he scouted him before the draft Finnie was not on the radar but ended up getting a lot more ice time than was typical due to injuries of other players. Draper saw Finnie’s skating as elite. He also said that Finnie has grown three inches since then. That’s a little hard to square with pre-draft and current measurements which both show him at 6’1” but agents sometimes exaggerate height pre-draft. And his listed weight is now 190 vs 170 pre-draft.

Anyway, seems like Draper was in the right place at the right time to see Finnie’s talents showcased.

Obviously, for a long time the Wings were too small and too slow and a lot of teams tried to come out and intimidate them early, and that's been Yzerman's job one since he got here. I suppose it's just habit now for the Oilers to keep on trying it. Not the same team any more though. I also remember Seider's rookie season the 1st time we played Edmonton McDavid took a run at Seider and Moritz put him on his rear. You knew then we had the 1st piece of the turnaround.  :classic_wink:

so far there is a big difference between this team at home and on the road.

they got worked by toronto but goalied their way to a win.  tonight theyre getting worked by...checks notes....buffalo but gibson is keeping them in it.

they miss kane's creativity on offense.

Compher? Wings take the lead, not exactly deserved based on the game so far.

and then they tie it.

that had been coming for a while.  **** defense by aljo on that rush.

you cant expect the goalies to win you every game.
