Just watched the highlights. Looked like Soderblom scored a Demolition Man goal. If he can grab this role, the Wings become a much more dangerous team.

He's actually quite agile. (In small areas) and has wicked stick control.

I think...

He should be called Phone Booth Man. Like an offensive guard in the NFL or Superman, he's spectacular in many ways (but only inside that phone booth...).

He can block out the sun (interfere with goalie's vision), demolition man, put a brick unmovable building (himself) in front of the goalie, and can stick handle from anywhere from just outside the crease out to (the point...?) 15 feet or so from the goalie and put the puck wherever it needs to go (into the goal... or a pass to the guy that has the best shot at a goal...).

He should NOT be the first guy back the other way to stop a scoring chance or odd man rush... and it will be OK if he's the last man back on defense if his starting point is just outside the opposite goalie's crease or behind his net... he's just NOT that first (or second or...) guy back on defense.

IMO.

So...

Demolition Man?

Or Phone Booth Man?

I've occasionally seen Elmer do  a nice job of just surrounding rushing wingers at center ice and pinching them off. It's another thing where we'd like to see more. That's the thing with Elmer - he's shown he can do a number of things, he just has to do more of them all.

Holmstrom was a bigger dino ciccarelli.  played very physical.  elmer is still too passive for a dude his size.  great hands, but sloooooow and weak.  needs to get stronger and meaner.

I rewatched the goal and realized Soderblom was boxing out Dylan Strome who is 6'4" and 200lbs. Elmer made a very big strong man look like a kid. Maybe it is just another flash in the pan but there are not a lot of players who have the physical attributes to dominate the Dylan Stromes of the world like this.

Kasper benched.

he went from first line hero to being benched.  i wouldnt be too upset if they moved finnie down to the third line and put kasper up top.

more worried about him moving forward as a viable second line center.  he doesnt seem to play as well with kane/debrincat as copp does.  his future might be on the wing.

what a weird year in the nhl.

i think we'll start to see a little separation in thw standings but probably not much.  hopefully the post olympic larkin/raymond decline doesnt happen this year.

my three pre-season bets are sitting on a knife's edge...wings and ducks to make the playoffs and rangers to miss the playoffs.

Send him down to Grand Rapids for a restart or recharge...

And call up MBN.

I don't know if flip-flopping him with Finnie will work...

... maybe?

And...

I'd rather he make it as a second-line center than regress to a wing... So I hope a GR restart will get him back to that center that played extremely well, last year, in-between Kane & Cat...

Not to go all-Mr.-Eternally-Optimistic again...

But yeah, hoping they solve the tougher level of NHL play that comes right at and after the trade deadline.

And here's where I'll be Mr.-Eternally-Optimistic again:

Weirdly...

All the types of help we could use to reinforce the Wings for the postseason push, is young, and in Grand Rapids:

Fresh goalie playing outstanding: Sebastian Cossa, check.

Depth goalie, just in case: Carter Gylander, check.

Scoring two-way power forward: Michael Brandon-Nygaard, check.

Defensive defenseman: William Wallinder, check.

Veteran depth defenseman: Justin Holl, check. (OK, not so young).

Defensive defenseman that is chipping in with some offense: Antti Tuomisto, check.

mcclellan said kasper was a scratch along with jbd because they wanted to make sure everyone got to play in front of their moms (it was moms weekend).

even if that's not totally true, i think its a good reason to scratch somebody.
