gehringer_2 Posted Monday at 03:57 AM Posted Monday at 03:57 AM One of Elmer's stronger games tonight - not only mixing up a little to defend his mates, but a good number of take-aways. Reimer not going to keep his new gig very long if he keeps dropping low enough for guys to shoot over his shoulder like the Wings did. Quote

Ottawa goaltending has been hilariously, historically bad this season. Quote

He also has been telling teams he wants to go to unrestricted free agency for the first time and won't extend. I'm sure Tater would have been thrilled if the Wings traded for half a season of Anderson and he bolted after they didn't win the cup. My dads turned into this type of fan where he rips on Yzerman for not doing the impossible (was very bent out of shape they didn't get Marchment when the Stars admitted they shopped him to only two teams), people think this is just a video game and you can force any trade or signing you want, it is crazy. 1 Quote

Shinzaki Posted Monday at 05:17 PM Posted Monday at 05:17 PM Did my heart good to see Elmer head hunt Grieg after he took that cheap shot at Raymond. Sure he was penalized, but you can't let cheap shots go like that...as they have in the past 1 Quote
slothfacekilla Posted Monday at 05:19 PM Posted Monday at 05:19 PM (edited) I've been talking myself into EP lately because it feels like an attainable asset. Still a scary proposition though. Edited Monday at 05:23 PM by slothfacekilla Quote

Still a scary proposition though. no, no, no, no, NO! 11.5 million per season for a guy who floats around on offense and is the opposite of physical on defense. that's the guy you want as the highest paid player on your team? the wings get continually bashed in physically by other teams, adding petersson to this team only exacerbates that problem. unless vancouver is literally giving him away, i am not interested. now, if the petersson of which you speak is vancouver's DEFENSEMAN of the same last name, that i am interested in. elias petersson the overpaid, soft as church music center? no thanks. i'd rather take my lumps with danielson. 1 Quote
Shinzaki Posted Monday at 05:41 PM Posted Monday at 05:41 PM I'd rather get Panarin than the Vancouver softie... Quote
slothfacekilla Posted Monday at 05:53 PM Posted Monday at 05:53 PM I think there's a chance he could bounce back in the right situation. He's obviously not built to be the go-to guy on a team and not a leader. If Vancouver retains a bit of money (they would need to with their reported asking price, 1st round pick + top 2 center + another asset) and a team slotted him on their second line maybe he finds his offense again. Detroit has a handful of Swedish guys that might make him feel comfortable, and vets who can handle leadership and the media. It is no doubt risky as hell and not ideally what I would want to do. It's just tough to acquire high end talent and if they can somehow use his current play/slump to make it happen I think I'd be for the swing at a first, danielson and another mid prospect. He also has a NMC so it'll be interesting to see if anything even comes of it. Plus Seravalli is wrong A LOT Quote

Plus Seravalli is wrong A LOT the only angle i can possibly convince myself will work is the "vancouver retains a ton of salary" and "the swedish guys bring out the best in him." i can almost talk myself into it at that point. but then i still go back to him basically crying in a corner because jt miller was bullying him. the last time the canucks were in the playoffs he was a complete no show. he signed that huge deal and fell off a cliff. is that who i want? do i really need a perennial lady byng candidate to lead my team? otoh, he wouldnt be the leader of the team. he could fade into the background and produce on line 2 or 3. but if that's who youre trading for, do you really want to pay that guy 11 million per year for the next SEVEN years? i dont. if you wanted to mortgage the future for a "star" then you should have ponied up for hughes. if you want to take on a distressed asset, then find one who doesnt make 11 million per year. I don't care about the money, it's not that big an increment, the only question is whether he can turn his career around away from Vancouver. The team was clearly banking on that happening when they moved Miller, so that argues no. OTOH, that locker room may have been so polarized by the time they moved Miller that it wasn't going to make any real difference to his alienation from the team. McLellan seems to be a pretty good coach, but if you're are going to turn around EP you probably need a Scotty Bowman. This team is close enough I don't think you need to take such a big risk of lousing things up. I'd pass based on knowing the little amount we do, but the front office does get paid to know more about the sub rosa than we do. Quote
lordstanley Posted Monday at 06:54 PM Author Posted Monday at 06:54 PM (edited) EP has negative value at $11.5mm. If he was a free agent, how much would you be willing to sign him for? I'd say $8mm-9mm. So the Canucks would need to retain enough to get down to that level, then just take a couple of things in return, not a haul. I would have made the Kiefer Sherwood trade in a heartbeat even knowing I'm unlikely to want to pay him this summer. Two seconds and a journeyman is fine for a rental who could help solidify a playoff spot and contribute towards possibly winning a round this season, both of which should be seen as attainable goals for the Wings. The Canucks may value the Sharks' seconds more than the Wings' seconds, so would have gone a bit better than Cole Clayton which isn't hard to do. Edited Monday at 06:57 PM by lordstanley Quote
gehringer_2 Posted yesterday at 03:08 AM Posted yesterday at 03:08 AM Great take on DeBrincat from McLellan in the post game "He drags a lot of his teammates into the game, every night". Quote

slothfacekilla Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Sherwood was scary to me if you were counting on him for anything outside of a lot of hits. 121 career points in 309 games, shooting the highest shooting percentage of his career. For a guy who doesn't seem to drive play and is supposed to be a complimentary player, having only two assists at 5 on 5 this season is crazy (six total!). I'm not saying he's a bad piece I just was not sure he really adds what the Wings are missing. Quote

buddha Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago 32 minutes ago, lordstanley said: No. I'd rather give up two seconds than one first. me too, but we already gave up a second for gibson. as much as sherwood would likely help them (assuming he's healthy), i think their resources will be better spent elsewhere if they choose to make a trade. mbn seems like a guy who can handle the "heavy checking forward" role, and sherwood's production this year is highly inflated and not likely to continue. they desperately need a second pair defenseman, if theyre going to give up a first or multiple seconds, it should be for that, if possible. buddha Posted 7 hours ago Posted 7 hours ago and montreal wins it with 15 seconds left because OF COURSE THEY DO. NO ONE IN THIS DIVISION EVER LOSES A GAME EVER! Quote
