Yeah, I guess it doesnt matter who Harris trades for, starters or relievers. He's probably not even going to make any big deals, he hasn't made any significant trades. It would be nice if he were to bring in some pitching but Mize and Melton will both be back. And JV still may contribute, we just don't know. JV to the pen? That would be...dramatic.

• Kyle Hurt, acquired in the same trade as Vesia
• Blake Treinen, bigish time FA
• Will Klein, DFA Trade
• Jack Dreyer, UDFA
• Edgardo Henriquez, international FA, small bonus
• Jake Eder, DFA Trade.

I see a lot of dumpster diving there. Let's head to the Bronx...

• Fernando Cruz, offseason trade for Jose Trevino
• Tim Hill, signed as in-season FA after being released
• Brent Headrick, waiver claim
• Camilo Doval, deadline trade last year
• Jake Bird, deadline trade last year.
• Ryan Yarbrough, signed last spring training after being released.
• Paul Blackburn, signed last summer after being released.

Not tracking with you.  You cite a lot of acquisitions via trade and free agency. And I suspect that the minor league free agents on those teams suggest that LA and NY might be better at identifying and developing players other teams have given up on.

More importantly, can you defend Hanifee, DeJesus, Guenther, etc..?  I don’t mind taking risks on bullpen arms, but they need to produce if that’s part of your strategy. There is no defending this bullpen (so far) this season.

For the Dodgers, Vesia, Hurt, Klein, Dreyer, and Eder are all dumpster dives. For the Yankees, Hill, Headrick, Blackburn, and Yarbrough are all similar.

In-season FA after a release is literally what is being bemoaned, and that is what those Yankees are. DFA trade is a trade to bypass waivers.

Smith and Hanifee have been really good this year by the way.

That’s going to be one of the things about the salary cap: if a team’s at the cap and a guy gets hurt, as Skubal just did, they would have no room to maneuver. Same goes for the trade deadline. Capped teams would be stuck, unless they develop some formula to assign cap space value to minor leaguers, maybe based on Pipeline ranks or something. Seems like that kind of thing would have to be baked into a CBA if they wanted to allow a majors-for-minors deadline trade under a cap regime.

Other leagues have that problem too but baseball has an advantage with their minor league teams. More players to choose from. Baseball teams may sign older players for the minor leagues just for injury protection. Speaking of which, I hope nobody tells Harris the the Marlins just DFA Chris Paddack. 😅

So has Hurter; Vest has been mostly decent despite a few high profile bad outings; and De Jesus is getting crushed by BABIP and LOB bad luck. His stuff is not getting hard and his cutter is bleeding value. Once the luck turns to normal and he gets his cutter back on board, I think we’ll probably be happy with him.
