They set their number and stuck to it, not bidding against themselves.  That is exactly how they should have played it.  The mistake will be matching.

Even if LA and Duren agree to an offer sheet today, there is still a ton of time to work out a sign and trade.

but that's what i mean.  i think he looked at the landscape and thought "no one else will offer him a max", and it looks like he might have been wrong.  and he traded stew so he has no backup and is sort of backed into a corner with the thought of getting nothing for duren or massively overpaying for duren.

Has it been a good offseason for trajan so far?  if the lakers are crazy enough to offer him a max and we have to match, wasnt that a huge misread of the market on trajan's part?

It might be but man I'd cringe at JD on a max.   Sometimes the best contracts are the ones you don't offer.

What would your alternative have been?

I agree with this.   The mistake will be overspending.   In today's NBA it handcuffs you.

A clear explanation of the $$ standoff.....

https://www.si.com/nba/nba-free-agency-tracker-2026-live-updates-analysis-signing-trade-rumor

ESPN and Andscape’s Marc Spears reported that the Pistons have offered what they believe is the most lucrative contract possible for Duren just ahead of free agency. It speaks volumes that the two sides have yet to agree upon a deal. Spears also noted that Detroit has no interest in completing a sign-and-trade and would match an offer sheet Duren signs with another team.

The most any other team could offer is four years for $177 million, which the Pistons seemingly are comfortable matching. The issue is that Duren seems to want more than that, which only Detroit can give to him unless the franchise agrees to a sign-and-trade. The Pistons hold all the leverage since the All-Star center is a restricted free agent. A messy situation that continues to unfold for last year’s best team in the East.

Kings: Agree to a Duren sign-n-trade and we'll send you Sabonis.

Pistons: NO! We will NOT do that, and we hold the cards.

Kings: Hmm, well, how about if we add in Keegan Murray and Maxime Raynaud, and you add in Duncan Robinson?

(I'm not certain how the numbers add up... just WAG'ing here...)

Pistons: OK.

Which says to me that the most likely scenario is that this is where Duren & the Pistons end up at.

Duren with the Pistons at AAV $44.25 mill per year for the next 4 years.

its possible they didnt think any team would have the cap space to make duren an offer that was above what they pistons were willing to pay.  or, if there was a team who wanted him, there could be a viable sogn and trade so they would get something for him if he got an offer that was too large.

now, with the lakers supposedly having interest in maxxing him, theyre faced with the possibility of either massively overpaying him, or losing him for nothing.  eother scenario is a mistake by the pistons.

i suspect they will match any lakers offer.  the good news is that it can only be for 4 years.

No chance.

The only way he isn't a Piston on opening night is if there is a sign and trade. I would guess there is almost no chance that happens either.

worst case scenario:

1) we sign him to a max contract.

2) another team signs him to a max contract and we match.

3) another team signs him to a max contract and we let him walk for nothing.

4) we do a sign and trade and get something back.

looks like door #2 is what will happen.  which means the pistons gambled and lost amd we all have to hope he improves instead of becoming a playoff albatross every year.

i do think all the extra shooting will help duren's pick and roll game.  but it does leave the ausar/duren on the floor at the same time question still unresolved.

It is MUCH less of a massive overpay if the Lakers max him at 4 years and $177 mill than if WE had maxxed him at our 5 years.

Right?

We can easily match the Lakers offer. So we're NOT losing him for nothing.

I would prefer a sign and trade... But... we'll see what happens.

Personally, I don't feel any stress at this point.

$44m aav for duren is a massive overpay.

Losing Duren would sting short term.  But you could easily fix it by next summer in the draft and free agency.

If you get a pick or two from LA you might be able to fix it now or by the trade deadline.  They would also get a decent chunk of cap space they might be able to spend on someone right now in free agency.  Or combine the picks + cap space to make a trade.

I think people would be shocked how little you actually need to spend on the C position.

Agreed. Exactly what I was saying earlier.

That was the last team with cap space to offer Duren a max deal.  The Pistons hold all the cards now.  Duren accepts their number or signs the qualifying offer and is an unrestricted free agent next summer.

alright!  advantage, trajan.

now dont screw it up.

i wonder if they offered the same to the pistons and they declined?

Wouldn't shock me if they didn't.  Going with Kessler at $130 million leaves them more money to make other moves this season.

Leverage gone

I would've taken this deal for Duren in a heartbeat. But the Lakers were smart and went with the better defender and the guy who wasn't asking for 40M+.

Now we're stuck with Duren who's going to pout because he didn't get a big enough bag of money.

I doubt that Duren would have went for the $130M
