Or any combination of players whose total salaries equal that or less. Now there are ways they could get a more expensive player. But it involves bringing in a third team and that gets much more complicated and I'm not going to try and figure that all out. Just know it is a possibility. Thank you for that. Don't get me wrong, they're flawed players but they all played a big part in the Pistons turnaround and changing the culture. Now they're bringing in smaller guys who are a bit softer and who knows what monstrosity coming from Sacramento if that sign and trade happens. Eh, I don't know, I don't want to pay Duren top dollar but I'm not liking the direction of this offseason. Now, if they sign Duren to that big of a deal they could trade him for Sabonis after December 15th. Quote

For the record, the happy moments were when the stories came out about Duren seeking a S&T and the sad ones were Omari's posts. He's could be wrong, but Vecini said a Sabonis deal was possible with the inclusion of Robinson. I also agree with him that I'd take Sabonis (2 year deal) and picks over Duren (4-5 year deal). Then take those Sacramento picks, add matching salary, and maybe a pick or two of your own, and go pay that TMIII tax. Quote
Deleterious Posted June 30 Author Posted June 30 Someone said they can get there if Sacramento cuts Derozan because only part of his deal is guaranteed. Then Detroit adds someone like LeVert to the deal. Because they can only take back about $28 million with just Duren, adding LeVert's $15 million lets them take back $43 and Sabonis makes $45. So Detroit might have to throw Smith in to make it work, but it can happen. There is an easier option. Detroit operates as an under the cap team. Teams that operate under the cap do not have the Base Year Compensation penalty when completing a sign and trade. That means the 50% penalty to Duren's contract value doesn't exist. They could then just swap Duren and Sabonis straight up. To do that they would have to renounce all of their free agents except Duren. That means they lose the ability to go over the cap to sign any of those guys back and would need to use raw cap space. This might be why we are hearing Tobias wont be back. Well then, if they renounced Huerter how are they going to bring him back? Teams operating under the cap get something called the Room Exception. The RE is just over $9 million. Huerters deal was announced at $9 million per year, so it fits right into the RE. They make all of their moves, use all of their cap space, then the last thing they do is sign Huerter using the exception. It's also possible the $9 million is just a coincidence. Even if they do operate under the cap, it doesn't mean they are doing it to do a sign and trade. They just might think it works better for what they have planned. Quote

But it's unlikely they are doing it in California. The Lakers have a scheduled phone call with Duren. This is why I said it's unlikely Sacramento is meeting Duren in California. If he was in California, you would think he would also sit down with LA in person. Quote
