buddha Posted July 24 Posted July 24 ku is in such denial about duren. as if the playoffs were just about him "not showing up" and not about his game being easily taken away by any team with decent rim protectors. its not going to change next year. maybe they get a better matchup in the playoffs and dont have to play a team with multiple bigs? then maybe he plays better. maybe the additional shooting will open up some space for his roll game? but with ausar on the floor that's going to be tough too. its not because duren didnt "try" (although he didnt try very hard either), its because his game is so dependent on cade and spacing. making duren your second highest paid player on a long term deal is a death sentence. he's not Bam. he's not giannis. he's not even gobert. he's deandre ayton. he's andre drummond. big guys who can roll and dunk but cant protect the rim and cant create for himself. Deleterious Posted July 24 Author Posted July 24 Duren would be much better off going to another team. His playoff life will continue to be miserable as long as Thompson's man can stand near the lane all game and clog up the middle. Quote
buddha Posted July 24 Posted July 24 im sure he does want it. no team in the league would give him anywhere close to that. well, i take that back. new orleans and sacramento still have nba franchises. Quote
ben9753 Posted July 24 Posted July 24 Between Duren, Skubal and Larkin its been a real competition for the most tone deaf athlete in Detroit this summer Quote
Shinzaki Posted July 24 Posted July 24 If Duren would work off the high post and shoot the occasional FT line jumper..it might loosen up the lane a bit. He's an excellent FT shooter..he ought to be able to hit that shot becuse it's gonna be open for awhile until teams are forced to scheme for it Quote
Deleterious Posted July 25 Author Posted July 25 The Athletic power rankings have Detroit 6th in the league. They have the Pistons 4th in the east behind NYK, Cleveland, and Philly. Quote

It depends. If he thinks he can get a 25% max contract from another team next summer, the QO is a better financial decision. If he can get that or not remains to be seen. But professional athletes rarely lack confidence. You also have to consider he just wants out of Detroit. They are about to extend another player who negatively impacts Duren's playing style. Quote
Deleterious Posted July 27 Author Posted July 27 They also could just negotiate a one-year deal for more money than the QO. Give him like $25 million to play next year. Duren would do it because it's more money. Detroit might consider it to appease Duren and keep open the possibility of him returning next summer. Being a 1-year deal means he still gets the no-trade clause. But you could ask him for a list of teams he would approve a trade to. Having him at $25 million allows Detroit to bring back a larger contract than if he was at $9 million. Other teams might be interested because his Bird rights would transfer to them, and they could go over the cap next summer to sign him. 1 Quote

Do you forego that security for the hope someone will give you 25% of the cap after next year, or do you take the 3 year guaranteed deal and then have the opportunity for the big payday when he will be coming off his age 25 season. Oh, you still gamble if its only 3/$90 million. We haven't heard anything about 3 years being on the table. But if it is, I want $40 million+ a year if I'm Duren. A shorter deal means more money, not less. Quote
Deleterious Posted July 27 Author Posted July 27 Nets, Bucks, and the Clippers all need a center next year. Bulls, Hawks, and Grizzlies all could use an upgrade. Quote

While I get what you're saying, if the Pistons aren't willing to budge from the $32 mil/yr, Duren has the option of shorter term at that AAV or the QO. If he gets a 25% deal next year, by the end of year 3, it's within $2 mil of the same number. If he gets anything less than a max next year, the 3 year $32 mil AAV deal is significantly more than taking the QO and he is a FA after his age 25 season with the shot to try again. If the Pistons offered him 3 years at $40 I think he would have jumped all over it by now as well he should, but they aren't, nor should they IMO. Quote

Do we have any credible sources linking Detroit to a 3-year offer? If Detroit hasn't offered it, Duren can't sign it. If I'm Duren's agent. I'm pretty happy seeing that list Smith posted on Twitter. Quite a few poorly run teams that A) have cap space well above the rumored $32 million AAV Detroit is offering and B) need centers. Quote

I have no idea how to rank the east and where the Pistons will fall but if we base it on quality of roster, the Pistons have fallen pretty far down the totem pole. The Knicks, Sixers, Cavs and Celtics are all probably ahead likely Toronto too if Kawhi is ever healthy then you have Miami with Giannis, Indiana with Haliburton and Orlando who could have easily knocked the Pistons out in the 1st round. Not to mention ascending teams like Atlanta, Charlotte (I don't think LaMelo will be that big a loss) and Washington. There's a possibility albeit remote that the Pistons fall to a play-in team. I doubt it because Cade alone is that good but the ceiling is limited when you only have one shot creator/scorer on the team. A guy like Holland is a real wild card, he's the only player on this team that has the ability to become a solid second scorer so if he breaks out that could be a gamechanger but that's a big IF. The bottom line is that the east is WAY stronger this season, the strongest that it's been in years perhaps decades. Last year was the Pistons real opportunity to strike and make a finals run and that came and went when Huerter was the big deadline add. Quote
