Yep we now have had Vierling for 2 of the biggest at bats of the night and hes predictable 0 for 2.

He just barely missed a run-scoring single on that second at bat. If he’d swung the bat a couple of millimeters lower it’d’ve been there.

I know, results are all that matters.

But at this point, do we even want Hinch to ever be right? He's already a smug jerk, if a .198 PH gets a big hit, it would just encourage 100 more calls that go right by the book. And that would be 100 fails.

Colt Keith is 8 for 57 with 3 BB and 0 HR against lefties the last two years.

True, however he’s getting very little at bats this year or last to improve on. His rookie year he hit .305 and a .362obp in 88 at bats against lefties.

Maybe LHP figured out how to get him out and Hinch recognized that.  He's not even that great against RHP this year.  Maybe he needs to figure out how to hit them consistently before he bats vs RHP.

I feel like having the folks that sit eye level behind home plate has to be super distracting

I have thought the same thing of super huge CF scoreboards in certain parks, like Milwaukee. How can the batter not be distracted by that? I know I would. But then, I came to the conclusion that to get to this level, you have to have 99th-percentile levels of concentration. Otherwise you simply get weeded out.

Maybe give him a chance to actually get an at bat against a lefty?  57 ABs in a year and a half..

Self fulfilling prophecy..he can't hit lefties, never gets to hit against lefties.

Jones and Vierling can't hit any pitchers regardless of which way they throw.

If AI is to be believed when Keith is pinch hit for Tigers hitters are 1-15 this year. If the results were there like last year we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

How can he hit them consistently when he never gets to hit against them?

Right,  It's all small sample sizes.  Make the next 15 at bats will be different.  As a fan, It's frustrating. I get it, but most LHH who don't field well are platooned unless they are stars.  I don't think this is an unusual situation.

How can Jace Jung hit consistently in the majors if nobody gives him a fair chance?  How about Gage Workman?

I remember when Champ Summers complained about not getting a chance against LHP, so Anderson put him out there against two top LHP (Flanagan and McGregor?) and he went 0 for 8.  😀

Sure that could happen. I’m not asking for Hinch to start Keith or Carp against lefties. Just not pull them in the middle innings for players who are statistically speaking 2 of the worst players in baseball so far. Maybe those players need to prove they can hit lefties this year before getting the pinch hit opportunities.  It’s not working this season so Hinch should adapt and try something different is all I’m asking.

Not even remotely the same argument.  One is being pulled against the same handed pitcher, the other are guys that can't hit in the minors against minor league pitchers.

I would like to see that too, but I don't have as much information as Hinch and I am not confident it would help them win games.

My argument is that we’ve already invested in Keith contractually—so play him in the field and against all pitching.  Or do we really want a 24 year old to be projected as a platoon DH for the next 7 years?

Don't question small sample sizes. The way Hinch manages is like having a PC monitor in the dugout spitting out the exact odds of every move. He goes right by the book and never plays a hunch. And if his team is losing from the 6th inning on, he uses his lesser arms from the BP. He doesnt use his better arms to keep a game close. Ever...he may need them next week. Today was a perfect example. Finnegan was fresh and there's a day off tomorrow. Hinch uses AAA Briske. WTH??

That's exactly the point.  They aren't good enought to hit in the majors, so they are not given a chance.  Maybe Hinch thinks that Keith can't hit lefties.  Or maybe he thinks hitting aghainst LHP will mess up his approach versus RHP.  Most lefties have a big platoon split.
