Leaving aside the Larkin bombshell, I understood at the time why he gave Stevie one more year. But it seems like everybody in the NHL knew that Larkin and Yzerman were not on speaking terms. There were also other signs of something toxic in the culture. It is alarming in retrospect that Chris did not act on these things, or even know them, sooner. There is also an element of this where Chris backed himself into a corner. with you start to let Stevie turn through coaches, you are tacitly buying into the argument that coaching is the issue, and not roster construction. Good point. It gets a little obscured since neither Lalonde or Bashill had a track record, making them easier targets to take the blame - clearly less true for McLelland. 1 Quote

buddha Posted July 21 Posted July 21 and people think they've done a good job scouting. they've been very bad at it. and it should caution everyone for getting too excited about their current crop of second rounders. let's see them actually play in grand rapids first. Quote

buddha Posted July 22 Posted July 22 the odds of either of those two being nhl regulars is slim. Quote
Cruzer1 Posted July 22 Author Posted July 22 The rest have washed out. The Wings have been forward and goalie happy in recent years. And they don't have a 2nd next year. They need a gm who's willing to trade for futures. 1 Quote

He also promises to solidify the second defensive pairing this season. I was listening to the NHL network on SiriusXM radio earlier and the host said “we all assume that Larkin is going to start the season in Detroit.” I think he is right. And I don’t think there is any way that he holds out and gives up his $8 million salary. The most likely scenario now, it seems, is that they will replace Patrick Kane with Arvidson and will bolster their bottom six with some of the kids from Grand Rapids, but Larkin will still be centering the top line. If Larkin really wants to get traded, he is going to have to put up numbers until the trade deadline. Who knows, everything could break their way this season and the new GM may get the green light to buy at the trade deadline. More likely, they will get to the deadline and unload Larkin and Faulk and Gibson and maybe DeBrincat. Quote

If Larkin's concerns were strongly personal between he and Yzerman and Yzerman is out of the picture, then it becomes a matter of the locker dynamic and that's probably up for grabs if Larkin has the skill and/or desire to fix it with his mates. Maybe less obvious issue is if McLellan has a view that Larkin 'won' a power battle against the GM with the owner, is it going to leave him feeling he has a player he doesn't dare coach effectively? Of course that's somewhat true on any team that has a superstar player anyway. And who knows, maybe Mac didn't like the way the future looked under Yzerman's FO either! Or maybe McLellan is gone and that's a moot point. 🤷♂️ Heck, if a new GM comes in brooms some of the deadwood like Rasmussen maybe there will be some addition by subtraction as well. Just my 2 cents. As for the return...? I don't know if new GM prefers to go the trade-for-Robertson and extend him route... or the gimme-as-much-futures as I can get route... But my money is on new guy resolving the Larkin issue, with a trade out, as soon as he reasonable can. Quote

But my money is on new guy resolving the Larkin issue, with a trade out, as soon as he reasonable can. of course it depends also on who comes in. While I don't think it's a likely outcome, Ilitch could promote one of the current old guard, in which case I would agree that person is likely to see moving Larkin as sine qua non. But since I at least hope that an 'old guard' hire is not going to happen, it can be a more fluid situation. Quote
1984Echoes Posted July 22 Posted July 22 I don't think a 'new guard' hire will be any different than an 'old guard' hire. I believe the realization/ reality (IMO) is that Larkin will be moved. The only issue will be in the handling of it. Quote

I can't disagree that conventional wisdom says you don't want to bring back a guy who requested a move - but I'm also guessing that Yzerman being out puts more options on the table than would ordinarily be the case, so we wait and see! Jason_R Posted July 22 Posted July 22 The new guard will not be hired independently of the Larkin question. In fact, it is unthinkable that Chris has no opinion on the matter, and it is unthinkable that he would hire someone who sees the situation differently. If it is the case that Chris fired Stevie in an effort to keep Larkin, you better believe he is not hiring someone who thinks he’s coming in to trade Larkin. Quote
buddha Posted July 23 Posted July 23 if chris illitch fired steve yzerman in order to keep dylan larkin on the team he's a worse owner than i thought. 1 Quote
slothfacekilla Posted July 30 Posted July 30 Apparently Yzerman is with the rest of the Red Wings contingent at the WJ Summer Showcase. Would be weird to bring him along if he was straight up fired to me but I guess weirder things have happened. I'm shocked he's there at all. Quote
