Apparently Yzerman is with the rest of the Red Wings contingent at the WJ Summer Showcase.  Would be weird to bring him along if he was straight up fired to me but I guess weirder things have happened.  I'm shocked he's there at all.

he wasnt straight up fired.

i dont really know, but he seems pretty involved for someone who was "fired."

max's latest has no news and a big "its going to take a while" vibe.

he does keep mentioning greenberg with the tigers.  analytics guy who came from the hawks to detroit.  maybe once the trade deadline is over in detroit, he becomes the main candidate?

I haven't been that impressed with the Blackhawks' front office but I guess that doesn't mean a whole lot at this point in regards to Greenberg.  Seems odd to hop back and forth between sports but I guess analytics are analytics?

I'm amuch more casual about my Tigers fandom these days, do Tigers fans have any sort of opinion about Greenberg and how he's been for the Tigers?

Yeah, no offense to Max but I was very underwhelmed after reading the article. Have any calls been made at all?

On the Tiger side, the conventional wisdom when he came in was that Greenberg would be a contracts and admin guy whle Scott Harris remained the 'baseball team' guy. We never hear from Greenberg about pretty much anything related to Tiger baseball. But OTOH, since he as no visibility, it's hard to know what he may actually be doing.

I wonder how soon Yzerman will be mentioned for future GM positions? One year, two year? Can't see people beating down his door right at the moment, or him in a rush to jump into anything.

i guess so because the nhl is such an old boys club, but i think yzerman is done as a gm.

can we end the talk that chris illitch knows what he's doing?

i bet he's waiting until the tigers are done and then hiring greenberg.

If he wants Greenberg there is no good reason not to make the move after the trade deadline tomorrow - the Tiger org is deep enough to cover for him - heck Harris operated without him for more than a full season.

Evan Gold hired away from Boston by the Isles.  I saw rumors this had been agreed to for a bit but they had to wait to announce it, but still a dude I thought the Wings could consider in their front office in some capacity.

The longer this drags on with no real reporting on names or interviews the more scared it makes me.  God what a mess.

I'm nearing retirement age from my day job. Just sayin ...    How about I be the face, you be the brains behind the scenes.

of course it depends also on who comes in. While I don't think it's a likely outcome, Ilitch could promote one of the current old guard, in which case I would agree that person is likely to see moving Larkin as sine qua non. But since I at least hope that an 'old guard' hire is not going to happen, it can be a more fluid situation.

helene reporting that larkin is still demanding to be traded to the small number of teams on which his buddies play.

so much for the "if you remove yzerman larkin will stay" crowd or the "illitch wants larkin to stay so he fired yzerman."

larkin is a 2026 nhl hockey player and he's going to demand to play where he wants.  contract he signed be damned.

if there is no likelihood of rapprochement, that sucks for the Wings and us fans because they sure aren't going to get value for him now.

Nobody knows how the Larkin situation will play out. Larkin doesn’t. His agent doesn’t. Ilitch doesn’t. Helene sure doesn’t.

But nothing will happen until a new GM is hired, and a new GM is not making a decision on this situation that Ilitch is not in lock step on. if Ilitch wants Larkin traded before training camp, it will happen. If Ilitch wants to hold Larkin to his contract, and make Larkin choose whether to play or not, it will happen. If Ilitch wants to hold out the olive branch, he will.

Allegedly interviews are going to begin next week, Friedman did a tv spot and someone summarized it on the wings subreddit:

  • Per Helene St James this week - Wings have hired a firm to identify candidates
  • Believes interview process will begin next week
  • Wings org is "very serious" about making sure candidates know they will have autonomy
    • Yzerman will not have a role in hockey ops going forward
  • Org is serious about next GM having "no shortage of resources" to implement their plan
  • Continue to be open minded about management structure and candidate background
  • They want whoever comes in to have a specific, actionable, concrete plan of how to get the Wings moving forward and make Detroit/Michigan a destination again
  • Speculates that Tigers GM Jeff Greenberg will be a candidate

There are so many qualified names out there that there is no reason to hire Jeff Greenberg at this point. It's fine if they interview him, but no need to hire him. Do we know if Draper is getting an interview and a serious look? He's the name I worry about most.

i imagine draper and horcoff will both get interviews.

i'd be sad if either remained in the organization, especially draper.

i want all the red wings alumni club broomed out.  you can stay as an unofficial scout, come to all the golf outings, be a brand ambassador, but we need to turn the page.

it sounds like iitch is doing that.  he did it with the tigers, so i expect he'll do it here too.
