oblong Posted April 30 Posted April 30 There's a new generation of Outlaws that in my opinion align with the originals in that they reject and don't go along with mainstream country. Their music has been highlighted in this thread by others. Sturgill, Isbell, etc The Ken Burns doc did a great job showing how the Outlaw movement grew. Willie wasn't having success in Nashville, went to Texas, basically created Austin City Limits. There he found himself playing in places that included college students, bikers, rednecks... they all got along. He told Waylon and Merle to get down there. Then Cash followed. Quote

I've blasted this tune and sung it many times drunk at a party or in my car driving around on a nice day. He did indeed sing the perfect country and western song. I’d never heard that song before, thank you! When it started I found it pretty generic and formulaic (which is how I view 99% of the genre). Then the line about his mama and the train hit and I audibly laughed! I also realized that this was original from back in the day which helped create the genre and had been copied 1000s of times since - so hat tip to the originator. I view it the same way that I view people who fawn over “Pet Sounds”: I guess you had to be there to appreciate the groundbreaking nature. Quote

Young folks and Old folks love him. Conservatives and Liberals. Country Fans, Rock Fans and even some Hip Hop fans. He's just kind of universal in a rare way. I think it's because he's genuine. He's not changing who he is to fit in. Quote
