I love the idea of more solar for the US but our fossil fuel lobby is driven by the gulf states who just like to pay money to our politicians who have no ability to resist that.

The economists who started pushing the theory of 'comparative advantage' on American economic policy makers roughly 40 years ago couldn't have been more wrong. There may such a thing as competitive advantage in geographic determined spheres like natural resources, but in the industrial and technology sectors, competitive advantage amounts to whoever spends the money and creates the incentives to become competitive.
