A win today locks in a winning record at the end of April.

The last time the Tigers didn’t have a losing record in April was 2017.  12-12 was the record.

The last time the Tigers had a winning record in April was 2016.  13-10.

Ironically the 47-114 2019 Tigers finished April at 11-12.

Vierling gets a lot of flack (particularly from certain podcast hosts), but even with Maton and Sands out of the organization, I'd rather have Vierling than Gregory Soto. And it's not even close

Soto drove me bonkers with his lack of control.  Sure, maybe he threw hard and had great stuff.  Nobody knew where the pitch was going.  His over 5.0 BB/9 isn’t anything I want out of a pitcher, in particular a pitcher that is used in higher leverage situations.  Kudos to him, he got that to 3.3 last season.  But it’s back to the typical 5.0+ neighborhood this season.  Nope, no thanks, pass.

It’s funny you mention podcast hosts about Vierling.  There were podcast hosts that slurped Soto’s credentials, and I just couldn’t understand it.  Again, throws hard, great stuff, can’t throw strikes.  So, great, two time all star, mostly to fulfill the every team represented requirement.  Whatever.

I think right now that Vierling looks comfortable enough at 3B and the plate to play him more often than not right now.  Greene, Canha, and Carpenter should be in the lineup every day hitting 1 through 3.  Perez seems to have a bit of a spurt right now.  Vierling is an everyday player right now.  Heck, maybe that’s the top 5 in the order right now?

I almost feel bad for Toledo Tokerson at this point.

I don’t know, this is a completely amateur arm chair opinion, but I wonder if he’s thinking too much or waiting for an absolutely perfect pitch and it’s simply working against him right now.

A couple of the IF misplays were bad hops/bad luck. When you see an IF with his glove low and the ball hits him in the forearm as often as not he was positioned right and the ball came up - it happens. Colt and Javy each had one in Tampa. They have been sloppy but it looks even worse when they're getting bad bounces at the same time too.

    Send Nabozny down?

How about they have simultaneous tv/radio broadcasts with Dickerson and Benetti?  No ex-jocks.

I do like ex-player good perspectives.  Unfortunately I think the commentary it comes with an amount of cheerleading and/or cliches.  And I think we understand the degree of either will differ depending upon who is offering the commentary.

And what problem does it solve?   York’s position as a 1:1 is meaningless now.  He’s the 1B for the time being.  This year is about finding out which of these guys can play. Not just him but everybody. Of all the slots to fill going forward 1B and DH are not a concern for me. Once they get their definitive answer it will be done.

1:1 is indeed meaningless at this point.  But most of that abridged draft has looked not so good if it has gotten to the MLB level.

Everybody can see this. People have been talking about it all year. The question is, can Gores swallow his pride and his wallet enough to fire the guy after he spent so much time making sure everyone knew he over-ruled Troy to bring him in? He trotted Monty out there like he was taking championship victory laps.

I guess we'll see what happens with the POBO. Maybe that's why Gores is bringing that person in - to fire Troy and Monty for him because he doesn't have the guts to do it himself.

Someone else said this, but the slow trickle of stories coming out now about Monty from the beat writers is reminiscent of how it was with Bey right around when he was moved. Even our guy JEIII, who notoriously doesn't like to burn bridges, has come out and said a lot of bad things about Monty. Maybe the beat writers already know something we don't. I can only hope that's true.

Here’s a fun thought.  What happens of Drunk Uncle Tommy misses on the president of basketball operations hiring.  If he’s afraid of firing Weaver and Williams on his own, how does he handle firing the president if it becomes obvious that it was a mistake hire?

First thing we need is to take a deep breath. Secondly I would like them to bat Tork lower and give him an extended run at DH only. Like 15 to 20 games to clear his mind.

Bring Hitua up for the 15 to 20 games Tork is DH to maybe add a spark which is all Hirua is good for. Once Tork hits move him back to first. If at seasons end he still hits only so so and continues to field poorly then consider him a DH going into 2025 planning.

Continue to play Meadows and Keith at least through May. No better options. Maybe platoon them for a couple weeks for a mini breather. Release a little pressure.

No reason to trade pitching now. I love Verling in RF every day but until Jung is ready or Urshela returns play him at third. Sigh. But soonest possible get Jung out up for MLB evaluation. Get ALL of Al’s kids evaluated this year so we can put a known team on the field in 2025.

And do not panic at the Trade deadline.

Who gets kicked off of the 40 and active roster for Hiura?  What do you do with him after you puts Torkelson back at 1B?

I think you've got to roll with Keith.  He's shown in the past that it takes some time for him to get going at a new level.  I think some of his nontraditonal metrics show he's had some bad luck on batted balls.  A .206 BABIP (vs league average .290), exit velocity of 88.2 (vs 88.3), hard hit rate of 31.7% (vs 39.1%).  I guess I would expect the exit velocity and hard hit rate to be more in tune with each other.  But his SO% is better than league average (18.8% vs 22.5%) and his walk rate is close to league average (7.1% vs 8.9%).  He's going to look overmatched at times, he's a rookie.  But I think there's a bit more to his numbers rather than being over his head.

Meadows is a different case.  He has a line drive rate of 3% vs league average of 23.9%.  That really sticks out.  Exit velocity and hard hit rate are below averages, so, sure, the chicken and the egg are there with the line drive rate.  But then he gives supreme defense and can cause chaos on the base paths if/when he gets there.

Jung still strikes out too much at AAA.  That has to be fixed before promotion.

Canha can play 1st base. At least move Tork down in the line-up. He's not producing enough for the 3rd spot or cleanup.

The top 3 should be a combination of Greene, Canha, and Carpenter.  After that, I’m not sure anyone has a claim to one slot or another right now.  So, he can be moved down from 3, that’s fine.  But how do you suggest they line up 4 through 9?

and don't get me wrong, i'm not saying hiura needs to come up.  but he's playing well at toledo.  tork is scuffling.  i doubt the tigers care.

I don’t care what Hiura is doing in Toledo.  He’s an absolute nonentity to me in terms of an answer at 1B for the Tigers.

Torkelson has been disappointing this season, no question.  He still has a chance at  a long term future with the Tigers.

because we have too man subpar defensive Outfielders and First Basemen.        When Riley is not on the field, we can wind up paying for it.      I don't like having Perez and Carpenter out there at the same time.    I mean,  Coach Buttermaker can tell Parker "Kelly Leek" Meadows to go make every play but then his teammates won't want to play catch with him before the games.

Nah, I'm cool with the other outfielders for a handful of turf games.  I don't want to say he's fragile.  I would simply rather use those defensive outfield innings on grass.

JEIII has a new article today detailing what he would do this summer.

He trades the 2024 #1 pick, Ivey, and Duren to Brooklyn for Bridges, Dorian Finney-Smith, and the first round pick Phoenix owes Brooklyn (Top 14 protected).

In free agency he would sign Nic Claxton, Delon Wright, and Thomas Bryant.  So this would be the roster next year:

Not terrible.  Little thin at guard.  I think a backup guard would be in the starting 5 with that roster.  But they probably win 30-35 games.

My problem is where do they go after this.  You are really counting on Cade and Thompson to improve for that roster to improve.

Yeah, this is it for me.  Where do they go from this season?  Who is going to get this team onto the right track going forward?  Forget the playoffs next season.  I would punt them for the next season also if it meant a better more sustainable ceiling.  And that might mean Cunningham isn't a part of the next winner in Detroit.  Heck, that might mean none of the current "core" are a part of the next playoff team.

As someone who got burned out on Pearl Jam years and years ago and as someone who hasn't really liked very much since the late 90s,  I gotta say this new album Dark Matter is actually really good.

I really liked Ten, Vs, and Vitalogy.  Yield is probably the only album I liked for a stretch after that.  Lightening Bolt drew me back in.  I really, really liked Gigaton.  I like Dark Matter.

So, I knew this album was to drop soon.  But, with two teenaged daughters in the house, all I heard about was Taylor Swift's album coming out.  And my eldest was just in her high school musical this weekend, Mama Mia.  4 shows of ABBA songs.  Don't get me wrong, it was a good show, the students were good.  But, 4 shows of ABBA songs.  So, once I was reminded on Friday that Dark Matter was out, I've tried to scrub 4 shows of ABBA out of my head with Dark Matter.  People,.... this ain't easy.

Aaron Boone got ejected yesterday by Hunter Wendlestedt, after being given a warning, because he heard a fan behind the dugout, say something immediately after.  On the video you can clearly see and hear it.  Afterwards, in a manner totally in line with the NFL and their officials, Wendlestedt said some nonsense about Boone's responsible for what comes out of his dugout.  Because it's too much to ask for an official to just admit they ****ed up.

That was pretty bad.  I can understand mistaking where the voice was coming from.  I didn't realize Boone had gotten a warning prior to this.  But, it isn't that difficult for the ump or MLB or whomever to simply say, hey, Wendlestedt simply thought the commentary came from the dugout, a warning had been issued, things played out live as they did, but upon review the ejection was a mistake.  Ain't that hard.

As an aside, hey, the fan paid the admission, so he can say whatever he wants to whomever he wants, right?

I'm still convinced Trump wants to spend a night in jail. The fundraising email is already written.

I don't agree with the jail time theory.  I think he's just arrogant enough to assume he will win by just being himself.  Loud and obnoxious.  I think he assumes he can shout down at anyone and the universe revolves around him.

We went to Fenway in 1992 when the Tigers were in town in September. On Saturday night we sat on the third base side and on the Sunday game we sat behind the first base dugouts. Wanted to get the two perspectives of the park. I’’m 6’3” and the seats were not an issue for me. Glad we went when we did.

You were wither 5'2" then or the seats have shrunk over time?
